It had been so long since Brody had actually seen Kay. They talked to each other all the time, especially with him having to keep checking in on her. Brody cared a lot about Kay, and it wasn’t like they didn’t have a lot going on. He had told her all about everything going on with his life and his desire to see Ben, but it was so hard on him trying to do the right thing now. Alana did not make things easy on him, and he had no reason to think that she would. But tonight was about spending time with his best friend in the world, the one and only Mykayla Trent. He had needed to see her gorgeous face, because he was going through withdraws. It also did not hurt that he had offered to cook for her, which was something that she was pretty special for. Brody knew how to cook, he just did not like to do it often. He actually hated doing it unless there was a really good reason, and Kay was always a good reason. He had started the preparations and started to look at his movie trunk, wondering how up for an evening of hanging out she would be. He knew she had not been feeling all that great lately, but she had Greyson now to hold her and coddle her all the time. She didn’t really need him; he did however need her. He would always need Kay in his life. That was when he heard the door open and peaked his head around the corner to the living room and a smile graced his lips. “Hey pretty lady. Dinner is cooking.” He smiled brightly as he met her in the living room and pulled her in a tight hug. He had missed her. “I missed you. How’ve ya been?” It was simple but true, he had missed her more than she would probably know. TAGGED : MYKAYLA // MERCY <3

This was something that she had been meaning to do for a while now. Brody Whitter was really one of the closest friends Mykayla had in life, and things always seemed a little off whenever they didn’t manage to squeeze some time in together. Lately, it seemed like one thing after another that kept them apart, but that was how life was sometimes. People got busy with other things, and leisure time with friends got taken away for a little while. Kay had a lot on her plate lately, and it didn’t help that school was also beginning to wrap up for her as well. She had been behind all year, but now it was coming time for graduation and she had had a lot to finish. Thankfully, most of that was done and behind her now and she could take time to focus on the more pressing matters her life had presented her with. Then there was Brody, who had invited her over to dinner and for once Kay was able to take him up on that offer. There was no exam to study for, no paper to revise or illness keeping her in bed. Greyson was at work this evening, and the rest of the family was trusting her with Brody for a couple of hours so she had gladly hoped into her little car and drove to his home. Once at the door, Kay let herself in without bothering to knock first, her nose met with the wonderful smell of whatever Brody was cooking. She knew how he hated to cook, and knew that it was pretty special that he had made this meal for her. Kay saw Brody peek around the corner, and she smiled back at him as she set her bag down by the door and kicked off her shoes. Then Mykayla was being scooped up into a tight hug as he friend met her in the living room, her arms wrapping around him to return that embrace. “I’ve missed you too, Brody. Probably more than you realize,” she said, smiling as she pulled away to look up into his handsome face. “I’ve been okay. I’m still here so that’s a plus,” she said with a little grin, knowing that Brody never enjoyed joking with her about the cancer that ailed her and could possibly kill her, but humor was the easiest way to deal with it most days. “So tell me what smells so good? You caught me on a day when I’m actually starving.”

Brody had been with Kay for as long as he knew about the cancer, hell he knew about it before the rest of her family. He had been there whenever Kade had been busy, and he had held her like he always would. That was just who he was, and yes he loved her. It was never going to change, not even if she got engaged or married. They would always have their special places in each other’s hearts, and that was one of the main reasons that he had invited her over for dinner. He had missed spending his quality time with her. Brody was not completely hopeless because he understood that things happen and life gets busy. It is the facts of life, but he was going to make sure that she took a break from her studying and all of that craziness. The blonde man needed her to come over so he could catch her up on everything that was going on in his life, and to find out all the details of what was with her now that her secret was out. At this rate he was going to be lucky to get any time with her at all, but all of those thoughts disappeared from his mind as he saw the blonde bombshell enter his apartment. Right now he was really just glad that Sam wasn’t home to see that he was actually using the kitchen to make this chicken he had found in one of her cookbooks. It looked delicious though, so he figured what the hell. He had scooped her up into a hug and was happy to have her there. Her smile was intoxicating, but the ways she joked about still being around always got under his skin. “You know, that still isn’t funny, but I think I realize it. After all, I juts pretend to be this cool about how much I miss you.” He laughed lightly and started to walk towards the kitchen. “It’s some sweet mustard chicken thing. Don’t laugh, but I found a cookbook. Yeah, I know you are going to laugh at me. I’m glad that you are hungry, because I am making a delicious meal!” He picked her up and set her on the counter being playful of course, “Now sit there, what do you want for dessert so I can start on that.”

She smiled up at her ex-boyfriend turned best friend, able to see how happy she had made him by coming over for dinner. Mykayla was happy any time she could make Brody smile, knowing that she gave him a lot of reasons not to lately. She wished she could take that all away and let them go back to the wonderful, carefree duo that they had been before if only so things would be easier for him. But, that was impossible to do and the most that Mykayla had to give today was the good grace of a strong appetite and not having to burst Brody’s bubble by picking around a plate of food that he had worked so diligently to prepare for her. That wasn’t to say that things wouldn’t turn worse later, but Kay was hoping for the best and putting it in her mind that they were going to have a good evening together. Her smile was constant as he spoke, and they slowly pulled away from each other and turned to go to the kitchen. She listened curiously as Brody told her what he was making, grinning over the fact that he had actually pulled the recipe from a cookbook. That was just adorable in her eyes, and she scanned the kitchen to see what kind of damage he had done only to have Brody sweep her up. Kay started in surprise, her grin returning when he had sat her up on the counter. She looked down into his handsome face now, seeing that playful light in his eyes. Apparently, she was to sit and not lift a finger, but he was asking her about dessert next, and she took only a moment to consider. “Any kind of cheesecake would be amazing,” she said, tilting her head slightly to the side still with that soft grin on her lips before the thought struck her that she usually wasn’t a cheesecake person and wondered why right now that was all she had a taste for. Then she knew, and softer smile graced her lips. “Can I help with anything? I don’t want to just sit here and feel useless.”

Maybe telling Mykayla that he had dug some recipe out of a cookbook wasn’t such a good idea, but he couldn’t help it. He had no idea what to make of that one, but somehow he knew she would get a good chuckle. There was something about her having an appetite that brought a smile to his lips. Not that he had not been grinning since she came into the apartment as always. Brody was just happy to be getting some quality time with his best friend. The blonde had been trying to prepare something for her, and hoped that she would actually eat it. The main entree was in the oven, almost done, whenever he had set her on the counter. The last thing he needed was his sickly best friend falling in the kitchen. He knew Mykayla very well, and that was whenever he went over to the freezer. The boy had gone to the store and was content to get a few different choices, and a chocolate cheesecake had been one of the choices. He knew that whatever Kay wasn’t able to eat, either Sam or Ashton would have no problem buying an array of treats. He pulled the cheesecake out and set it on the opposite counter as Kay so she would not be tempted to eat her dessert first. “You women are all the same. Sam likes cheesecake, Ashton likes chocolate, and you...you are always the wildcard.” He turned back around to face and then placed a soft gentle kiss on her forehead. “Mykayla, I told you to sit. You are to be completely useless and watch me cook. Because you are the only one to see this in action, so just enjoy it.” He grabbed one of the potholders and checked on the chicken, it was looking delicious as he pulled it out of the oven. He unwrapped the tinfoil, and was content with how everything was going. “Alright, you wanna help? Go set the table. That way i can bring the plates of delicious goodness out and you can be all cute sitting down.” He smiled and hoped she remembered where everything was.

Her doctor had warned her that her body would be going through some changes with this new addition growing inside of it. She would probably feel like she was dying of thirst and want for water all the time. She could still be active if she exercised regularly, but expect the back aches and pains, as well as in the hips. Her interest in sex could increase or decrease, and there were certain changes with that that would come over time. Food cravings could start as early as two to three weeks in, and while Mykayla had seemingly been spared of that thus far, this sudden sweet tooth was so very unlike her that she knew it was something to do with her pregnancy. It felt like if she were handed a cheesecake, she could devour the entire thing by herself with no shame in it at all, but she tried not to let that thought be too obvious as she sat at her perch on the counter, watching as Brody pulled the mother of all cheese cakes from the freezer. It was a chocolate cheese cake. Dear Lord. As if he could read her mind and knew how much she wanted that cake, Brody sat the dessert down on the opposite counter. Her blue eyes lingered on it for a moment before she was looking at Brody, him leaning in and placing the sweetest kiss on her forehead. Then he was telling her that she was to be completely useless, and she puckered out her lower lip, pretend pouting. It did nothing to faze him as he left her and went to pull the chicken from the oven. “Can I just say that you are too cute when you cook?” she teased, pretend pout gone and replaced with her little smile. Brody did give her instructions on how to help, though, and Kay just nodded, still beaming. “Got it.” She slid her tiny frame down from the counter and started working her way around the kitchen as though it were her own, getting plates and silverware and napkins to take to the table. She had to make two trips to get everything in there that she thought they would need, but she did it all with that smile on her face. It felt good to, well, feel this good, especially since he had been getting used to seeing her at her worst. Today was just a good day, and although she knew that there would come a time when she was going to have to ruin a part of that, it could wait. “Table is ready! Are you sure that I can’t help you with anything else in there? I’m feeling rather able today.” She poked her head back into the kitchen, watching him as he still manned the oven, getting the last things together. Mykayla’s gaze was bright as she leaned her head against the wall there, still watching him with a half grin on her lips, knowing she was about to be told that she was to be sitting and not worrying about helping him.

Pulling out that cheesecake had been a very dangerous idea as Brody caught site of the desire in Mykayla’s eyes. For some reason this girl was having a sweet tooth attack, and it was not something he was really used to with her. Any of the other girls yes, but Kay had never been one of them. He always treated her like she was the most precious girl in the world, and that was who he had become because of her. The pouting that his best friend managed to do whenever he told her to be useless was just funny to him. She was always eager to help, but whenever he thought about it she needed her rest. That was just a known fact with the cancer treatment; Brody had seen her at her worst and held her until she fell asleep. It had been part of his duties, and he was not about to change that. He did however turn and get his chicken whenever he heard her speaking. “You can say I look cute all you want, but i’m not doing this for anyone else. Hell Ash hasn’t even seen me cook yet Kay. It’s just your special little treat.” He smiled and then she was off flitting about the kitchen getting the necessary items to set the table. It was nice to see her happy and in such a good mood; it had been a long while since the blonde man had seen her like this. Brody saw her peak her head around from the dining room, and all he did was shake his head. He specifically told her to sit down after he was all done making the food he would bring it out to her. “Mykayla Trent, I told you to go sit down. I don’t need your help flitting around my kitchen, I need you to sit and be be adorable. So go sit, I’m just about done here.” He smiled at her, knowing that she was just being her adorable self. He waited until she was away from the doorframe so that he could pull the food out on to the plate that he had set out and brought it out to her. “Well gorgeous, I hope you are hungry because dinner is served.”

How did she know that she was about to be told to go sit herself down and not even think about helping any more than what she had by setting the table? Because this was Brody that she was dealing with, and no matter how well she felt or how good she looked today, he was still going to treat her like a fragile little princess. He had always handled her this way, waiting on her and doing cute, special little things for her, but Kay felt that it was intensified since he had been made aware of her illness. The people that knew took things easy on her, letting her sit more often and made special efforts to not wear her down, which Kay guessed she should have appreciated more than she should. She just really despised feeling as though she was completely useless to them now just because she had cancer. But, the all had a little more information than Brody did, and more reason to sit her out because of that. Mykayla would tell him tonight, and then he would probably want to put her in a bubble like her brothers did. Kay sighed, dramatically just for effect and rolled her eyes playfully at Brody before doing as she was told and going back to the table, taking her seat and waiting for him. It didn’t take Brody long, and soon he was sitting a plate down in front of her, the food on it looking delicious. “This looks so great,” she said, looking up at him with a smile before she picked up her fork and started to dig in. It was cute how she praised his cooking, mostly because she personally thought that he should do it more often because when he did, it always turned out so well. Today’s meal was no exception. “This is really good, Brody. Thank you for having me over.” She knew that he would feel no need for her to thank him, but this was Kay. “So how’s Sam been? And you need to tell me more about this Ashton girl.”

Mykayla Trent was always treated like a princess whenever she was around Brody. He had always treated her like that, but now that she had cancer maybe he did it a bit to the extreme. He was always just worried about her getting worse or being the cause of one of her bad days. Brody hated to see her whenever she could barely move, but he did not mind taking care of her. It had always been that way, because that was just who Brody Whitter was whenever he was around Mykayla. He knew that she was not useless, and she seemed to be looking a lot better than she had been the past few weeks. There was just something about her that was different in the way she carried herself. He watched her as she rolled her eyes and made a big deal out of him telling her to sit, but this was Brody and she should honestly know better. The only reason he had wanted her out was so he could get everything ready and take it out to her. Now that it was set in front of her, he smiled brightly. Her compliment was not wasted, and he knew her feeling on his cooking. She was one of very few that ever got to experience his cooking, but that was because she was just special. There was no other way to explain the dynamic of why she was what she was in his life. “Thanks. I hope you like it.” That was when she picked up her fork, and he did the same thing. He was ready to eat, especially since he had slaved over a stove to create it. That part always left him even more hungry than he began. “You know you can come over anytime you want to, and I am a pretty good cook, aren’t I?” He laughed lightly as he shoved another bite into his mouth and listened to her questions. Thinking about Ashton brought some color to his cheeks. He really could fall for that girl, if he hadn’t already and the worst part was that he knew it. “Oh you know Sam. Pain in my ass like always, and what else do you want to know about Ashton? You ask, I’ll tell.” That was a dangerous proposition, but it was Kay. He doubted that she would ask anything that would make her uncomfortable.

This felt so normal that it was just stunning. Mykayla was too used to the time that she spent with Brody lately being all about her and how she felt and how she was doing. Usually she was sick and weak because of treatment and he got to swoop in and be her savior for the day, taking care of her and being there for whatever she needed. Kay was more grateful to Brody for those moments than she would ever be able to fully express, but she could never really tell him just how sick of it she was. Kay hated feeling like she was that weak, like she had to be taken care of. Right now, it felt like back before she had cancer, or before Brody had known about it. They were having a fantastic meal that Kay knew was nothing to take for granted when it came to Brody’s cooking, and for once their conversation was not all about her and what was going on in her little life. Kay smiled brightly as she listened to his reply, laughing lightly on the part with Sam, but very interested to hear what he had to say about Ashton. Kay knew so little about this girl that her friend was falling for, and maybe she wasn’t supposed to know everything but this was Brody. They were close enough to talk about things like this. What else did she want to know about this girl? ”I want to know everything. She’s obviously special to you, so tell me why.” She asked her question with a smile before taking another bite of this delicious dinner, looking over him and so genuinely interested in his answer and happiness even if there was a small tinge of a bittersweet feeling to it all considering their past together.

Brody knew that Mykayla would not take anything about his cooking for granted. She knew that he only did it on special occasions and for special people. No one else had experienced his cooking in long ass time. Kay was the only one that mattered. The blonde man also missed these days when things were simple and easy. Back whenever they were just carefree and not worried about her cancer. There were so many days that he worried that she was not getting any better, but the days are always darkest before they get better. Anyone knew that, and Brody knew better than to let his hope waver that she would get better. Instead they were having an amazing dinner and she actually looked healthy for once. Like she wasn’t about to break, and that made him smile. As much as Brody loved his sister, everyone knew that she was a severe pain in the ass. The two of them were sarcastic and just stupid, so it was not hard to figure out why he said that. Hell the woman gave him a hard time about ordering chinese food the first night Ashton had stayed. Brody however was a little uncomfortable talking about his love life, especially because it was Kay. He was not one to just be like oh let me tell you everything. But a smile twitched on his lips as she spoke. Ashton was special, and that was obvious. He could have fallen for her, and he very well may have. Instead of answering that question, he smiled at her. “Yeah, well why don’t you tell me what makes Greyson so special and we can compare notes? Sound like a plan to you.” Brody really did hate having the attention on him, so to turn it back to the happy couple would make things easier. He still had no idea what to call himself and Ashton. They were just there, but Kay was engaged. She was moving on so completely from anything that they were and it hurt sometimes. It hurt him to see her so happy with someone else, but he was just happy that she was finally so happy that she was smiling all the time.

Mykayla knew that talking about relationships wasn’t always the easiest thing to do with Brody. They were close friends now, both having accepted their past together and knowing that friends was all they were, but there were still moments when that seemed impossible to agree to and move on. Kay couldn’t deny the obvious chemistry that was still present between them, and she also couldn’t deny that she had thought on a few occasions that if they could try a relationship again, they might just be able to make this one stick. But, Mykayla knew in her heart the reason that they weren’t together was still very real to her, whether Brody completely understood or not. She wouldn’t put him through that only to realize once again that they weren’t meant for each other in that way, but being his friend like this didn’t make it any easier to hear him talk about another girl despite the fact that Kay was so genuinely happy for him. She wasn’t selfish, and she wasn’t conceited. She just had a part of her heart that would always be Brody’s, yet she was still able to smile as she awaited her answer about Ashton. A sigh passed through the young blonde’s lips as she heard her friend counter with another question instead of answering her own. Kay should have known that he wouldn’t want that kind of attention on a topic like this, but she was going to have to indulge him on this one and answer his question first. Her smile softened just thinking of Grey, even if they weren’t on great terms at the moment. ”He’s my best friend, Brody. He has been ever since we were kids. He’s been with me through everything, and he’s…he’s what I need. I’m more with him than I am without him, even if things aren’t always perfect between us.” It was impossible to put all of her feelings into words, or to try to make Brody understand. He would probably realize that things weren’t great between Kay and Grey now with just the sad tinge that had touched her voice, but that wasn’t the point of this conversation. She really wanted his understanding, and grinned. ”And there’s the stellar sex, of course.” She couldn’t believe that she had just said that, and color came to her cheeks even as she had, but she was going for humor here.
