His hazel eyes watched from the background, Kade lifting the red solo cup in his hand up to his lips to take a drink. Someone had definitely spiked the punch, and he was glad that they had. Otherwise, there was a good chance that he wouldn’t still be standing there. Kade Trent didn’t really know why he was so uneasy at this party. After all, everyone here was having a good time, celebrating the birthday of the Garland sisters and making it special for them. Kade had happened upon Vidette earlier, giving her a big hug and wishing her his best only to find Stella a little later and wish her the same. It wasn’t like the party was unpleasant, or not fun. People were having a great time, and Kade used to be that guy that was spiking the punch himself and right there in the spotlight, drinking and laughing along with the rest of them. Perhaps it was just knowing that the third Garland sister was lurking somewhere in the shadows that was putting the young man on edge, or maybe it was the fact that he knew Britt Hale was here somewhere. The second one was more likely than the first, as Kade didn’t personally have any issues with Evelyn Garland and had no part in her massive agenda for this town but Britt shouldn’t have scared him either. Things were better between them, but maybe that was what made this difficult. Kade had known how to be when she had hated him and avoided him at all costs. Now, well, now what were they supposed to do? Kade had no idea where they were supposed to go from here, but his hazel eyes spotted her again in the crowd. He took a big swallow of the drink he held, finishing it off quickly and then he sighed. There was no reason to be this way, and he definitely shouldn’t have been avoiding her. Avoiding her had been what started this mess, and Kade wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice, so with that he approached her, seeing her blue eyes land on him as he drew nearer and a smile coming to his lips. “Hey,” he offered. “How’s it going?” Generic conversation? Maybe, but this was a huge improvement for them.

Britt wasn’t so sure about this. She hadn’t been crazy about going to the party, but she had known the girls for a very long time, and once upon a time Britt and Vidette had actually been really good friends. The fact that they weren’t now was completely Britt’s fault. Britt knew pretty much everyone in this room, and had at one point been friends with most of them. She couldn’t really say the same now, though. She had spent a good bit of time hanging out with Kaler and Vidette because she honestly didn’t know where else to go. She had left them when she had caught site of Miss Peyton Roth, who looked just about as uncomfortable as Britt felt. She had hung out with her for a good while before Hunter had showed up. A huge weight had been lifted off of Britt’s tiny shoulders after her talk with Hunter about what had happened between them. She still felt bad, but her guilt was slowly leaving. She urged Hunter and Peyton to go dance, and couldn’t help but smile when Peyton followed him out onto the floor. It was absolutely adorable, she thought, and she felt that if the two of them really gave it a chance they would be great together. Hunter deserved someone good in his life, and Britt didn’t know if she knew anyone was pure and good as Peyton. But with those two gone, Britt was left on her own once again, and she honestly didn’t know what to do with herself. Just about everyone wore masks here, but Britt had known these people so long she could tell who most of them were. It was then, though, that she spotted him as he made his way to where she stood. Her stomach twisted into knots at the side of them, though she wasn’t sure if it was from nerves or dread or something else. It wasn’t a very comfortable feeling. “Hey. How’s it going?” Britt offered him a smile. “Good, I suppose. I don’t really know what to do with myself right now.” She didn’t like this one bit. She felt like she didn’t know how to talk to him or be around him anymore, and that wasn’t something that she was at all familiar with. Things had never been like this with her and Kade. “Hunter and Peyton seem to be having a pretty good time, though,” she said, directing his attention to the pair on the floor. It really was cute.

As Kade looked at Britt, some form or relief washed over him. While things were seemingly awkward between them, this was better than the two of them avoiding each other like the plague, right? Of course it was, because neither of them seemed to know how to correctly function without the other in their life. Kade had certainly been on the fast track to nowhere when he had been away, and Britt, well, her self destructive tendencies spoke for themselves. But now that things were better, it was just that healing process and figuring out how to pick up and be something again. This conversation may not be as relaxed and as easy as they would have preferred it to be, but they really couldn’t ask for more at this point. At least they were talking and able to try to move forward from here. Kade’s conversation starter hadn’t been much because he really hadn’t known what to say to the girl, but it had gotten them going. It seemed that they were in the same boat with this party, neither of them really knowing what to do with themselves and kind of just hanging out for the time being. Before the night was over, Kade and his brothers would probably end up drunk and doing something stupid with Kaler Scott as their leader, but that wouldn’t be until later. Then Britt was directing Kade’s attention toward his youngest brother and Kaler’s little sister. Hunter and Peyton had somehow ended up dancing together, and Kade’s eyebrow arched a bit at that one. “That sly dog, using those driving lessons as a cover for his real motives,” he teased, a smile coming to his lips. Hunter was the last guy on the planet that would ever think of something like that, but it was fun to joke about. “It’s good, though. He deserves to be happy and so does Peyton. I wonder how Kaler’s taking that one…” It was no secret that Kaler had grown to love Peyton like any brother loves his sister, and therefore was just as protective over her as Kade was over his siblings. It was kind of amusing to think about. Kade glanced back to Britt, seeing her pretty gown and mask. Kade himself had foregone the mask and was lucky to have shown up in the dress shirt and pants rather than a t-shirt and jeans. “You look nice tonight,” he added more softly, hoping that those kind of comments weren’t off limits.
