There was absolutely nothing in this world less attractive than kneeling in front of a toilet and puking your guts up into it. Mykayla had always been that girl that never got sick, seeming resilient to colds and other bugs that went around and kept her friends, even her siblings, from going to school most cold and flu seasons. Even when she had just a little too much to drink, she was never left worshiping the porcelain the next day, making her the envy of most of her friends as she escaped with a headache at the very most. Now, though, Kay knew all too well what It meant to be sick and it was the most dreadful thing that she could imagine. Her treatments had left her ill before, but what it had been doing to her poor body the last week had been above and beyond. Mykayla knew to keep the fluids pumping through her and hoped that it would pass, but when it didn’t she found herself going to her doctor. It seemed that there was even more reason for her to be crippled on the bathroom floor that mid-afternoon than usual, and it was enough to make her heart race and her stomach seize up with nerves just to think about. So far, she had done a pretty good job of hiding this from Greyson, him being at work and her left alone enough to try to get it out of her system before he returned. Today it seemed like she could only sit and get settled for ten minutes at the most before she was sent to the toilet again, wondering how there could possibly be anything left for her to throw up and it all being enough to pull tears from her blue eyes. This was disgraceful, and she couldn’t even begin to realize that Grey had come home and was moving in her direction as she got sick once again.

------- the roar of the engine coming to life on his truck made grey happy. why? because it meant he was finally going home for the day! he had found himself at work that morning and not on his own free will. his partner and friend, felix, had been calling ever since grey had told him about how he wasn't leaving anymore, and kept adding things to his to-do list every time. it was hard leaving mykayla after finally having her with him, but he knew he had to. it was his business, after all! he had said goodbye to her that morning after noticing she was a bit pale. she had been this way for a while now and often picked around her food. she hadn't mentioned being sick, so grey let it roll off his shoulders. the twenty-five year old had spent the entire time away thinking about her, though. once he arrived in his driveway, he locked the truck and took off to the door in a jog. the second the door was unlocked, he bolted in. "kay!" it wasn't said in a yell, but more of a raised voice. he had figured she was just in the living room and wouldn't need him to yell. but she wasn't. his brow furrowed as he took the steps to his home. once he turned the corner into his bedroom, he heard the sound of kay puking in the bathroom. his feet quickly carried him to her as he knelt down, brushing his hand over her back. "are you okay? you didn't tell me you were sick!" once she looked at him, grey gently pushed the hair out of her face as a frown appeared on his face. he didn't like seeing her this way! "i'll call the doctor and get you an appointment."

This has to stop sometime. Mykayla had been taking the same kind of treatments for almost two months now, and this kind of reaction had never happened. And really, just this one change couldn’t be making her this ill this quickly; if so, then she was in for a world of misery throughout the duration. Or, maybe this was just a little hiccup, and it would pass and not always be this bad. Kay really hoped that it would pass, because this couldn’t be her life. She had worked so hard to stay in school so that she could graduate on time. Taking more sick days, no matter what her reason or justification, was simply not acceptable right now. However, her body might have different plans, and obviously hadn’t let her go to her two classes that day. She was still in her sweats and tank top, her hair a mess as she hadn’t had time to think about pulling it back and she was just a mess in general. It was not the way that she needed Greyson to see her, and yet he was home and stooping at her side. Great… She could hear the concern in his voice, and after reaching up with a shaky hand to flush the toilet, she was able to sit back and see it in his beautiful face. Her face, well, she was sure it was not nearly as pretty right now with tears streaming down her pale cheeks. Grey was just so good, though, not flinching away from her and offering to go call a doctor for her right away. Kay let herself lean back against the wall, drained and barely able to hold her head up and eyes open as she looked back at him. ”No, you don’t have to. I already went,” she told him softly, her voice giving way to just how spent she was. This would probably be a surprise to him, but Kay bit down on her lower lip gently as she contemplated what she was about to say. ”I know why I’m sick, Grey. It’s just so hard to tell you…” And now new tears pricked at her eyes as she looked at this man she loved more than anything, about to break news to him that she knew would break his heart in return.

------- his blue eyes stared into her's as he saw her fighting something in her head. what was wrong? he could obviously tell she was sick, but now that he looked he saw something different. he couldn't quite say what it was. it could be the fact that he rarely saw her sick like this, so it could just be his mind playing tricks on him. grey was trying to convince himself of this when mykayla began saying that she had already been to the doctor. his face lightened up a little at the thought that she knew what was wrong and would be getting better soon, but her next words caused any of that emotion to fall away and turn into worry. hard to tell him? what could be hard to tell him? oh god. this couldn't be good. all he think about was scenarios of what could be wrong. he was trying to be patient and let her come out on her own, but he needed to speak before he exploded. "you know you can tell me anything." it was hard to hide the worry in his voice, and it showed. "what's wrong, kay?" his blue eyes stared at her in wonder, waiting to be hit with whatever news she had for him.

Looking up into his bright blue eyes, Kay knew that she wasn’t going to be able to lie to him anymore. She had never wanted to lie from the start, and had convinced herself over and over that it was okay to omit some of the truth as long as it was for the greater good of her friends and family. But, that had been before this, before she knew that she wasn’t going to be getting better at the rate at which she had hoped and that things were going to be so much worse first. It was just hard, looking at this man that loved her so much knowing that he was going to be upset, and knowing that she couldn’t protect him from that any longer. Her heart was already breaking for him, but Kay’s eyes were almost pleading with Greyson, asking for understanding. He said that she could tell him anything, and Mykayla had always known that about him since a very young age when they had become best friends, but this was going to be the most difficult thing she would ever have to say to him. However, there was some light in all of this. “I have a few things to tell you, and you can’t be angry at me about any of it, okay?” she told him weakly, thinking that she had said very similar words to her friend Brody not so long ago. Asking Greyson not to be angry probably didn’t make any sense to him, and she knew that it would be hard for him not to be mad once he knew the whole story, but she hoped he could just be there for her right now and they could sort the rest out later. After having his assurance, Kay took a long, shaky breath, her heart racing as she leaned back against that wall, eyes on Grey’s as he crouched there beside her. “I’m pregnant, Grey. We’re having a baby.” A small, although weak, smile was on her lips. Kay had never thought she’d have a baby before she was married, but she loved Greyson with all her heart. She thought his reaction would be wonder at how they had managed to let that one happen so early into their relationship, and then hoped for his happiness. This wasn’t the part she had thought he would be upset about, but the part that she had yet to tell.

------- grey realized he was holding his breath as he stared at mykayla. he could see something in her changing as she fought to tell him about whatever it was making her sick. letting out a deep breath as she started to speak, he took her hand in his, using his thumb to gently rubbed it on her palm. "i could never be mad at you." though right now he believed that, he knew it may not be one-hundred percent true. hell, he had been somewhat mad at her just a few weeks ago! he swallowed hard, waiting for her to speak again. his arms were aching to hold her close to him; tell her it would all be okay. but now, he wasn't so sure! her words almost knocked him down, though, causing him to stare at her. at first, he even wondered if he had heard her right. his brow slightly furrowed as he thought about what she had said. pregnant. she was pregnant. and with his child. as the words sunk in, his expression on his face softened and turned to pure shock. "you- you're pregnant?" he shook his head with shock as a smile crept onto his face. "i'm going to be a dad." his voice was flat as he spoke, but grey was getting excited inside. he couldn't exactly say if he wanted kids right away, but he always knew he'd have them someday. someday just came faster than he thought. "we're going to have a baby!" emotion was finally in his voice this time. he smiled brightly at her, but soon it faltered a bit when he noticed she had that look again. "there's something else, isn't there?" he silently prayed she would say no, and just that she wasn't sure how he'd react, or at least something simple to that affect!

Kay had known for a very long time that Greyson McCarthy would always play a role in her life. For the longest time, he was simply her best friend, always there for her and always able to brighten her day just by being around. When they were younger, Mykayla hadn’t dreamed that she would one day be sitting here like this, heart stopping in her chest as she told him that she was pregnant with his child, but here they were. He had already won the role of her lover, the one she wanted to be with forever, but Grey was about to be informed up his step up to also being the father of her child. Mykayla knew him, though, and knew of his love for her; this was not something that he would be expecting, but he would never react with anger towards her. He had wanted to marry her the moment they had gotten together. Having a baby a little early wouldn’t really be too much of a kink in their plans. Kay watched as her words fell on him, seeing the confusion, and then the shock, and then the smile she had hoped for. She smiled along with him, though she doubted that happiness could touch her blue eyes while she knew what she still had to tell him was going to take away all the joy he was feeling. “There’s something else, isn’t there?” She nodded her head yes, looking down and away from him just for a moment before Kay forced her blue eyes to look into his. “You don’t know how much I wish that there wasn’t, and that I could just let us be happy…” Oh god, this was going to break her heart. Mykayla could already feel it as her small hand gripped Grey’s. “But there is something else, and I’ve known about it for a long time. I didn’t tell you, or anyone else, because I couldn’t have you worrying about me when I was going to be fine…but this baby means things will change for me, and I can’t hide it from you. I have cancer, Grey. I’m so sorry that I didn’t tell you.” A tear slid down her cheek, but she had to keep going. “I’ve been doing well, so well that no one even noticed. The treatments were working, and the doctors said I had good odds of making a full recovery, but then about a week ago I started feeling so bad, so I went to the hospital thinking something had gone wrong, but it was really the opposite. I’m pregnant, which is something that cancer patients, or even survivors don’t get to say as often because treatment lowers your chance of having a baby. We’re barely a month along, but if I stop treatment for a little while, our baby will be okay.” It was so much to comprehend, and she had tried to speak softly, slowly, a few more tears spilling from her eyes but her wanting him to know everything. Greyson deserved as much, and she just hoped that they could be okay.

------- grey didn't think any type of "bracing" would have helped for what information was coming his way. all he could do was stare at mykayla as she spoke. the only word that he really registered at the time was cancer. cancer. the girl he had dreamed of being with for years and now finally had was not only pregnant with his child, but had cancer. grey felt his throat constrict tightly as he held back the urge to cry. the last time this had happened to him was when they had stopped talking the night at his restaurant. everything had turned out perfectly after that, of course, but could this ever turn out good? her hand gripping his caused his eyes to leave hers as he stared at there hands intertwined. he wanted to be a dad - especially after hearing that she was pregnant. but how could he even think of starting a family now when he risked losing the one person he wanted to do that with? sighing deeply, he forced back another wave of emotion as his blue eyes slowly drifted back up to her face where he saw her now crying. his heart ached at seeing this! he couldn't bare to see her in anymore pain, and that would continue if she didn't keep her treatment going. grey sat up straight as he let out a deep breath before speaking. "you can't have this baby then." did he really just say that? even he wasn't sure if he had, but he had started it now and couldn't go back anymore. "you can't stop treatment. i won't lose you!" tears pricked at the back of his eyes as he spoke. "i won't." his last words were merely a whisper as a flood of tears finally filled his eyes. he lowered his head as he used his hand to wipe away the ones that escaped. "you can get an abortion and then we will try again once you're better." that was the hardest thing he had ever said before, and now the twenty-five year old waited for what lay ahead for the future of their relationship and their unborn child.

This was one of the few moments in which Mykayla wished that she had just told everyone from the beginning that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Yes, they would all treat her like she was fragile and about to break, and they would have all had that much more on their plates to worry about and to stress over. Things would have been different, and who knows if she and Greyson would have ended up together if something like that had come to the surface before? Things would have been different, but at least right now she wouldn’t have to be doing this, sitting there on the bathroom floor and watching Grey crumble after she had just given him such great news. It seemed so cruel, and she hated that she had had to do tell him like this, but what else could she have done? Kay could practically see all of this hitting him, watching the emotions pour through him one after another and hoping against all hope that he would figure out a way to be okay with this, if there was one at all. However, the first words out of his lips were not what she was hoping to hear. Kay recoiled as if he had slapped her in the face, which he might as well have done. She couldn’t have this baby? Her mouth fell slightly ajar, her blue, tear filled eyes wide as Greyson continued to speak. Kay’s heart shattered completely when she saw tears spill down from Grey’s eyes, and she wanted to reach out to him but he was already wiping those tears away. But when that word “abortion” was spoken, Mykayla was absolutely shocked. She pulled her hand away from his. “An abortion?” she repeated, hating how the word felt on her lips. “I can’t do that, Grey, not when I’ve already talked to the doctors and know what other options I have. I know what I’m risking, but that’s my choice. I just…need to know that you’re here for me through this.” She was asking so much of him, she knew, but she needed him. It was that simple. “I know it’s scary, but please? I want this baby so much, and I want you.” Mykayla felt as though she were pleading with him, and in a way she was because she knew that he had choices to make too. She just hoped that he could look into her eyes and see what she saw.

------- abortion wasn't something grey supported wholeheartedly, but it was something he understood was out there for those who needed it. and at this moment, he truly thought it was what mykayla needed to do. if she was sick and needed treatment that could harm the baby, he didn't want to risk it! he understood that she would stop treatment now, but was he ready to risk losing her, too? he watched as her face turned solemn and confused. he wasn't sure how she'd react to what he had said, but he could only hope they would make it through this ordeal together! her words made him hang his head as his eyes closed. how could he be with her in this when he risked losing her? he wanted the baby, yes, but not at the chance of not having her anymore. it had taken him too long to get kay to notice him in a way other than a friend. he sighed as he calmed the tears that threatened to spill again. "i can't." he looked up at her with weak eyes. "i want you more than anything! i will not lose you. a baby can wait. your life can't!" he stood up from where he sat and walked over to the sink. using his arms to brace himself, he looked into the mirror with a sigh. he knew he was being selfish, but he wasn't going back now. "you'll get an abortion. and that's that!" he never looked back to kay as he spoke, and even when he was done he just remained looking at his red eyes in the mirror.

It was an impossible situation; she knew that. They had only just gotten together, it seemed, and now life had come at them so fast and without warning of what it had in store for them. Mykayla had known about her cancer, yes, but she had also been in the thinking that she was on a fast track to recovery, remission seeming guaranteed and the illness would just be a little bump in the road that she would overcome. Now it all seemed to be falling apart just as they had gotten things on track, and she could tell just by watching his eyes that Grey wasn’t going to go along with her way of thinking so easily. But really, she couldn’t blame him for being scared because she was scared too. Kay just hadn’t expected that he wouldn’t be willing to be there with her, and his words hit her like a punch to the gut. He couldn’t? The baby could wait? Did he not just hear how special of a chance this was and that she may not be able to have another baby? Her teary eyes watched as Greyson stood, more tears threatening to fall. That’s when he told her, or more or less ordered her to have an abortion, and Kay could only stare up at him for a long moment. The sadness that had touched her eyes was replaced with newfound stubbornness, a hint of frown setting in on her pretty face. “No.” Kay move then, weakly picking herself up off of the floor as she felt drained of all energy, but she couldn’t just stay where she was. “I’m not getting an abortion, and I’m not going to let you make that decision for me. I already know what I want, and you had better decide what you want but just understand that I’m keeping this baby. If you want me, you have to want it, too.” She watched him warily, terrified of what this might mean for them, but she couldn’t give him what he wanted this time. “Take some time to figure it out, but just know that if you decide you don’t want this baby, then you’re out. You don’t get to come back in when the scary parts are over, and you don’t get to try to make up for this. I love you, and I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I was sick…but you need to trust me.” And right now, he clearly didn’t. She looked at him, but then turned and headed for his bedroom where her things were. She needed to put on some real clothes, and then she would be leaving, giving Grey some space and time. It would kill her, but Kay knew that she owed him that much.
