There was definitely a voice in the back of his head telling him that he should just stay out of this. Mykayla was a big girl, and she was definitely capable of handling herself in her relationships. Kade had been very proud when she had retold him how she had stood her ground and told Grey what she was going to do instead of letting him tell her. Kay was a mild, sweetheart of a girl but Kade had never stood for her to be a doormat. She could handle this, but Kade was her big brother and he hated seeing what all of this was doing to her. Even so, he probably still would not have interfered and gotten into this unless he didn’t think that he had something that would make things better for his little sister. Sure, Kade wanted to kick this guy’s ass from the beginning, and he still did, but he was reminding himself that this was not about that as he parked his truck in front of Greyson McCarthy’s house. Again, he thought about how there was a good chance that he was getting too involved, but he was already walking to the front door now. No going back. Kade knocked, looking around the porch and surroundings as he waited for an answer. He knew Greyson, mostly from all the years that this guy had spent hanging around Mykayla. That much said, it was understandable that Kade had never been out here before, but his mind was pulled away from that the moment Grey opened the door. “Hey. Mykayla around?” Kade knew that she wouldn’t be, but it seemed easier than an awkward greeting. Not around? “Good.” And then Kade stepped forward, more or less letting himself into the house, his hazel eyes glancing around the place quickly before going back to Greyson, who was probably more than confused at this point. “I’m not here to kick your ass, if that’s what you’re thinking. I should, and I will if you give me any more reasons to, but for right now, I’m just here to talk.” Kade wasn’t intentionally trying to threaten the other young man, but he hoped Grey knew that he had meant what he said. The Trent’s were a close knit family, and they looked out for their own first. “Can we sit down or something?” He offered something of a friendly smile as he asked, trying to be even toned and level headed about this if only for Mykayla’s sake.

------- grey pushed the sleeves of his flannel shirt up to his elbows as he looked out over the lake. it was starting to take on the summer look with the weather finally warming up from the usual snow. his boat was in front of him, waiting to be ridden out on the water. he had just spent the last couple of hours working on it. he hated to leave it sitting around during the winter months, but it was usually too cold to even step outside long enough to work on it. now that it was warm again he had to tune it up if he was ever going to use it again in the summer. just as the afternoon hit, grey decided he had done enough work for one day and slowly wandered into his house. it killed him how quiet it had been in there lately without mykayla around. it was his fault, though. if only he had thought his words through a little more when he suggested an abortion of the child they had created. now the two barely spoke unless forced to, which killed him all too much! as he was washing his hands in the kitchen sink, the doorbell rang throughout the house. grey felt his brow furrow, drying his hands on a nearby towel. he jogged the length of the hallway to the main door, and when he opened it he couldn't lie and say he wasn't shocked to find kade trent standing there. when he asked if mykayla was there, grey merely shook his head, knowing that kade must have known she didn't spend that much time here lately. he was shocked again when the man pushed his way inside, taking up the rest of the hallway. grey was certain he was going to hit him, but his words took that idea away. "um." he paused for a second as he looked kade over and decided what he should do. "i guess. the living room is that way." with a point of his finger, he showed the way into the living room and watched kade sit down while grey prepared himself for what was to come from kade and him being at his home.

Even though Kade was able to maintain the friendly demeanor, and do it rather well if did say so himself, that didn’t mean that underneath it all, he was ready to punch this guy in the face. Kade had known Greyson for a long time, them being the same age and going through school together. They were not close, but from how much Mykayla doted on him, Kade had always gotten the sense that Grey was a good guy and could be trusted to take care of Kay. Now things weren’t looking that way, and Kade really felt like paying Grey back for all the times that Kade had watched her mope, heard the sadness touch her voice or see tears well up in those bright blue eyes. But, he had made a promise to be civil, and not to hurt this other man, but he was making it clear that there were no other options here. As expected, Greyson didn’t seem to fully understand it, but he was cooperating which was smart on his part. Kade just nodded and went the direction in which Grey had pointed, finding the living room and taking a seat, making himself at home easily. “I guess you know why I’m here, right? Kay told me…about the baby.” That light, easy going way about this had just taken a serious turn. “She told me what you asked her to do, and I gotta say that I don’t blame you. I would have done the same thing.” And Kade still wasn’t happy that she was letting herself go untreated, but he had accepted her decision, like they all hoped Greyson would. “But I think you realize that she’s stubborn enough to do this her way with or without you. So far it seems like you’re choosing to let her go instead of dealing with it, which I understand because I’ve done it. I’m just here to tell you that’s a mistake.” Walking away from the woman that he loved after she had told him she was pregnant was the worst mistake Kade had made in his life. Granted, there were higher stakes with Mykayla, but both Kade and Grey had done what they had done for one reason, and that was fear. “Walking away from someone like her doesn’t make things easier, Grey.”

------- grey ran a hand over his hair as he watched kade make himself comfortable on his couch. he didn't really mind that, seeing as he had known kade for years. it was just the fact that he did it so easily that made grey stare. there was no way grey would have been able to go into someone else's home and immediately be comfortable like that! as kade began to speak, the twenty-five year old leaned against the door frame and pressed his lips in a tight line. he knew what was coming, and when it did, he felt himself sigh. whenever someone mentioned the word "baby" to him, he always felt his heart jump and his stomach turn to knots. his brow furrowed as the other man went on about how he didn't blame grey for saying what he had about the baby and mykayla. he was a bit stunned that he would say that since it was his sister, after all. he held his tongue when the words of grey letting kay go over this were said. he was in no way leaving mykayla, though he understood why people thought that since he was distancing himself more and more each day. once everything kade had to say was laid before him, grey took the chance to speak up. "i'm not walking away. i'm-" he cut himself off as his feet took him over to the other end of the couch where he plopped down, running a quick hand over his eyes in frustration. "i just need time. she needs time!" he knew he was stepping over a line in saying that, but it was how he felt. "you obviously know what it's like to have someone you love sick and possibly dying, but i can't handle that happening to kay when she's doing it for... my child." the words were harsh on grey when he said them.

Kade knew how hard this had to be on Greyson, even if Kade wasn’t much in the way of making excuses for other people. He could understand how terrifying the idea of someone you love as much as he loved Mykayla having cancer was, and add on the fact that she was denying treatment? Kade was a mess about it himself, though he had learned long ago to control those emotions. And he didn’t mean to sit there on Grey’s couch and lecture about what was right and what was wrong, and he wasn’t there to try and persuade him or pressure him into going to Mykayla and making things right this instant. Kade was there for Grey just as much as he was there for his sister, and he watched as Greyson moved from the doorframe to sit on the other end of the couch. If he wasn’t walking away, then what the hell did he think he was doing? The more time and space he put between himself and Kay, the more likely it was that things were not going to get better. Mykayla loved this guy, but she wasn’t likely to forget abandonment. Kade listened as Grey continued, the words making perfect sense in some ways. In other ways, well, they made Kade pretty much want to haul off and punch the guy in the face for being that stupid. Kade waited a moment before responding, making sure that was all that was going to be said. “But she is doing it for your child. Do you think ignoring her is going to make her change her mind? You’re afraid of losing her, but you’re giving up time with her that she may not have to give.” It was hard to say that, hard to think that Kay could very well die by surrendering her body to this cancer while she tries to give this baby a chance at life, but that’s what it was. Everyone had to learn to accept that. “You blame the pregnancy for her getting sick, but she was already sick. You wish she would think of you in all of this, but I assure you that she is. She is risking her life to give you something pretty special, and you’re going to thank her for that one day whether you realize it now or not.” Kade could feel his throat tighten, and quickly put himself in check. Breaking down wasn’t an option for him. “Just think about it, man. She’s your girl, and that’s your kid. You’re going to want to be there for them even though the circumstances kind of suck.”

------- grey knew all of this was complicated for others having to see it all happen, but for him it was more than he could handle. how was he supposed to accept this baby when it meant accepting the fact that mykayla was sick and possibly dying? a sigh escaped his lips as he listened to kade go on more about the distance grey was putting between him and kay. he knew it wasn't a good idea, but he was so afraid he would say the wrong thing at the wrong time, making it all much worse than it already was. "i know. that's why this is killing me!" he said in reply to the distance statements. he knew that right now he needed to just hold mykayla and assure her it would all be okay, but he didn't know if it would be. he didn't want to tell her it was okay when it wasn't! of course, he was starting to believe everything was turned upside down that even his own thoughts were confusing him. as he listened to kade, grey tried to picture his life with kay, with kay and the baby, and with just the baby. he was content with the first two, but would he ever be able to face the third if it came down to it? he knew her being pregnant at a time like this was a miracle. maybe that was what scared him, knowing that this kid was a risk. but hadn't he loved risks before? his thoughts swirled through his head as he tried to piece them together. "even if i did change my mind, she would never be able to forgive me for what i said. i told her to get an abortion, kade. that's not something easily forgiven." it was his own words that made him finally realize that maybe, after all, he did want this baby - no matter what the cost. he wanted mykayla, yes, but if she was willing to risk her life for this child, then so was grey! but how did he fix things now?

Kade really hoped that he was actually getting some kind of message across to the other young man. They may not have ever been close friends, but if Greyson was with Mykayla, then Kade considered him to be part of the family. Granted, right now Grey was an estranged part of the family and at his own doing, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that Kade needed Greyson to understand that he couldn’t do what Kade himself had done. Kade had forfeited his chance at having a family with the woman that he loved, and hadn’t been there for her when her life had fallen to pieces, losing their baby along with a big part of herself. Even though being with Mykayla and watching her grow weaker as the time went on would probably be the most difficult thing Grey would ever do, not being there would be far worse. Kade didn’t know how to get him to accept this idea of the baby, but he supposed all he could do was to try and push Grey in that direction and hope that he found himself back with Kay where Kade knew he really wanted to be. That much was evident as Grey spoke on how difficult being away from his girlfriend was; he wanted to be there, and now Kade could glimpse at just how conflicted he was. But, Kade listened and resisted the urge to roll those hazel colored eyes of his at the other man. “Have you met Mykayla? She’s the most forgiving creature in the world. Yeah, you might have hurt her feelings in a big kind of way, but I wouldn’t doubt just how much she loves you. Hell, did she not agree to marry you on day one after all that other bullshit between you two? That’s gotta say something.” Kade offered a kind, half amused smile as he tried to lighten the gravity of the conversation.

------- the twenty-five year old had to admit that kade was right. mykayla was one of the most forgiving people. hell, she had forgiven him for how he acted after the night at his restaurant when no other person would have! but what he had said to her was truly wrong. no father should ever suggest an abortion to the woman he loved, and grey had. sighing to himself, he couldn't stifle a smile at the last words that kade said about the proposal grey had given kay after only one day of being with her. "technically she said no! but i guess so." though she had rejected, she hadn't said no exactly. she just said no to right then and there! resting his elbows on his knees, he covered his face with his hands as he thought about everything. he needed to think of a way to get kay back and make things right before it was too late. he figured mykayla would forgive him - after all, kade had said she would and he knew her better than anyone. just any old apology wouldn't work for grey, though. he needed something that would truly show her that he loved her and would risk it all in order to bring the child they had created into this world. "i really fucked this one up!" he said lifting his head and looking back to kade. he shook his head at his own stupidity before pushing himself off of the couch. "you want a beer or something?" all grey knew was what he needed some alcohol of whatever type right now, and he was going to get one whether kade wanted one or not!
