Vidette Garland did not scare easily. Movies like The Fourth Kind and Paranormal Activity barely illicited a reaction out of her, and costumed people who hid in corners at haunted houses only made succeeded in making her laugh. Today, however, Vidette was scared. She had spent the last few days making frequent, sporadic trips to the bathroom, purchasing new bras to accomodate for her unprecidented breast growth, and eating the strangest combinations of food. More often than not, she felt grouchy and irritated and she now had the tendency to fly off the handle at any given second over silly little things. Poor Kaler had been the victim of the majority of her mood swings so far, and once she had calmed down, she would proceed to apologize profusely while simultaneously bursting into tears. She could tell that he was shocked by this suddent shift in attitude, but no one could be as surprised as she was. This was all so unlike her, and it hadn't occurred to her until earlier this morning, as she was bent over a toilet, heaving her little heart out, what this could be. It was a plausible concept, and it could easily explain each and every one of her 'symptoms', but just thinking the word in her mind was enough to terrify her. Pregnant.
Knowing that she needed a definite answer - or at least a decently definite answer - she grabbed her phone and had spent a good fifteen minutes scrolling through her contacts to find the most reliable, trustworthy person she knew; a person who could buy a pregnancy test for her with the least hesitation. By this point in time, the entire town of Arietta knew about her monogamous relationship with Kaler. If she waltzed in and purchased the test herself, someone would more than likely see her and the word would travel to Kaler faster than the speed of light. Naturally, Kaler should be the first to know, but she didn't want to bother him with it unless it was necessary. So, obviously, Shayne was her first choice. She worked at the hospital and could snag a free test without anyone noticing or suspecting foul play. She wouldn't be questioned, and it would be common place to see a nurse carrying them as if it were no big deal. However, she knew that if she even mentioned the word pregnant to Shayne, not only would Vidette be bombarded with a lecture about irresponsibility and her obvious distaste with Kaler, but she'd also be victim to that look of utter disappointment. Right now, that was the last thing she needed. The next two choices were fairly obvious as well - Hunter or Talan. Asking Talan to do something of that magnitude for her would be incredibly awkward, considering their past and all. So Hunter was the most logical choice. Which inevitably led to her current position: Sitting in the passenger seat of Hunter's car outside the local drug store. He had whined in protest the whole drive over, repeating "Do I really have to do this?" over and over - he was beginning to sound an awful lot like a broken record. "Come on you big baby," she sighed, unbuckling her seatbelt so she could reach over and open his door for him, giving him a light pat on the shoulder. "I'll be right out here if you need me." Vidette flashed him an encouraging smile and a swift nod, looking a lot more confident than she actually felt.

Hunter Trent had grown up with those kinds of situations filling his life thanks to his two older brothers, Kade and Jared, as well with his two younger sisters, Mykayla and Amy. They were always calling on him for one thing or another, and Hunter, being the kind of guy that he was, didn’t have the heart to tell them to deal with it on their own or without his help. He always wound up being the one to cover for them, being the one on watch, or right smack dab in the middle of whatever crazy scheme they had concocted. He was certainly the milder one out of the bunch, Mykayla even having more of a tendency to get herself into some mischief even though she never did it by choice. So naturally it was Hunter that they called in to keep the calm, the one to keep the level head and to keep all their dirty little secrets that they had piled up over the years. He was the trustworthy one with that amazingly kind heart that made him ideal for delicate situations, and he supposed that was what drove Vidette Garland to call him that afternoon. That and maybe the fact that he was one of her closest friends had something to do with it as well.
Hunter was always happy to hear from the girl, and especially now when she seemed so much happier herself. There had been a time there that Hunter had worried about her and her happiness, knowing that she was dealing with so much and him having no real way of fixing it because he was naturally not meddler. He was friends with both her and Kaler, and he had watched them both suffer and try to go on without the other. It had been such a relief to him when he had heard that they had resolved most of their issues, and things had seemed to be going along quite smoothly since. However, that afternoon there was a hitch in the scheme of things, and Hunter was once again being called on to help his friend. This wasn’t something that he had ever expected her to ask him to do, though, and it he was in no way fond of the idea. Sitting with her and waiting on the results of a pregnancy test was one thing, but actually having to go into the store and purchase it? The very idea was mortifying in itself. He really didn’t want to do this, and he had expressed that several times on the drive to their local drug store. Hunter did understand her reasoning, and how if she were the one to purchase it the town would have her pregnant with twins within the hour and Kaler would surely blow a gasket. So sure, there was good reasoning and logic behind it, but he still didn’t want to have to go in there. Vidette was determined, though, as she reached over and opened his car door for him. “I’ll be right out here if you need me.” Hunter just looked at her for a moment, and then sighed in defeat. “Fine. You know, it’s a good thing I like you.”
Once inside the store, Hunter realized how truly difficult this was going to be. In a town like this, everyone knows everyone else, and it wasn’t like a guy of his height had any hope at all of blending in and going unnoticed. He sluggishly dragged himself back through the aisles, heading for the small family planning section. Once there, he started at the shelves, having every kind of condom you could want, self-lubricants, and the pregnancy tests that he was there for. His dark eyes scanned over them, Hunter trying to ignore the people that walked passed him. Dear God, why did there have to be so many? In a moment of panic, he reached for his phone and quickly dialed up his loving friend Vidette, shaking his head. “I can’t do this!” he blurted out as soon as she answered her phone. “Do you even know how many different kinds there are of these things? I have no idea what I’m looking at and I’m clearly in over my head here.” His voice was a rushed whisper into the phone, again trying not to draw too much attention to himself. “What do I do?”

A pregnancy was something that Vidette had not anticipated, and her lack of anticipation led to a lack of planning. She knew Kaler had gone through this all before, and he would have been a father if...well, needless to say he never got the chance to become a father. But Vidette had never had this kind of experience before; Kaler had had the time to mull over the thought of being a parent whereas she didn't. If she did happen to be pregnant, her boyfriend would be far more prepared for this than she could ever hope to be. As soon as the thought occurred to her that she might, in fact, be pregnant, the first thing she felt was dread. Not because she never wanted to have a child with Kaler, but because she wasn't ready to have a child with Kaler. The prospect of doing so at such a young age was both terrifying and nerve-wracking, and having a baby out of wedlock would just be the icing on the cake. Her parents were very strict about that sort of thing, always had been and always will be and despite how much they adored Kaler, she highly doubted that they would push aside their morals and accept this child if Vidette hadn't walked down the aisle with him. On top of that, she couldn't see herself as a mother. Throughout her twenty two years, many people had commented on how gentle and loving she was, stating that those qualities would make her a wonderful parent some day. But Vidette could never see it. She felt she would never be responsible enough to care for herself, her husband, and a child all at once. How other people did it was a complete mystery to her, but Viddy never felt competent to even fully care for herself, let alone another life. She was still a kid herself. Sort of.
The sound of her cell phone ringing had her pulling the device from her purse, frowning at the sight of Hunter's name. He had just left her only a moment ago, how was it possible that he had already run into some sort of trouble? She answered with a sigh, rolling her eyes at his panicked, hushed voice. If this were any other occasion and she wasn't already shitting a brick, Vidette probably would have laughed at her best friends predicament. Girls often had a habit of roping their male friends into purchasing feminine products for them; sending Hunter in to buy a pregnancy test would be right up there on the awkward scale with tampons and bras, but to save both her own sanity and Kaler's, this was a necessary mission. "You're kidding me," she sighed, reaching up to pinch the bridge of her nose. "They're just boxes with words on them, Hunter. Grab one that sounds convincing and you're done!" It couldn't really be that difficult, and it's not like there was an aisle solely dedicated to pregnancy tests with five hundred different brands littering the shelves. And even if there were, each of those tests would lead to the same result - pregnant or not pregnant. Sure, some would probably be faulty and give her a false positive or negative, but she had instructed him to buy two or three boxes anyway, just in case. But what if they all gave her a false positive? What if she saw that little plus sign on multiple tests and felt that sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach, and had to face her fears and tell Kaler? Either she would get his hopes up and he would want the baby, or he would have a full-blown panic attack - either way, it would be a lie. The excitement would be for nothing, the panic would be for nothing...she wouldn't be pregnant. She'd be waiting and waiting for the symptoms to get worse and her stomach to balloon out and her back to ache, only to realize that it wasn't going to happen. That all of these symptoms were probably false positives, too. Then what? She would have to either crush his hopes or relieve him of the stress of becoming a future father, which may hurt him anyway after what he had been through in the past. He had never told her the whole story with that, but she knew it really messed with his head. Vidette couldn't even imagine being the second person to deliver him that news, only to rip it out from under him a second time around. And what about false negatives? Those were significantly less common than positives, but they were not unheard of. Relief would wash over her at the little minus sign, knowing that she still had more time to mature and prepare for a baby, only to find out that she was pregnant. That she didn't have time and her and Kaler had to figure out how to be parents in only a few months. When did this pregnancy thing become so fucking stressful? Vidette sighed.
Then, finally, a smile crept up on her lips as she imagined him standing there, clutching his phone and attempting to look inconspicuous despite his giant size while having a minor meltdown over pregnancy tests. It took everything in her to withhold her laughter, and instead focused on messing with the radio. "If you can't decide on a specific kind, grab more than one!" Hunter with an armful of tests was, perhaps, the most amusing image ever, and the laugh she had worked so hard to hold in finally broke through. She was quick to cover her mouth, trying to muffle the sound as to not discourage him anymore, but she couldn't help it. This was just too good.

[bg=030303][th]

[bg=030303] .. [bg=101010] [scrolly:h(400),w(280),sy] In the car, this had seemed like an okay idea. Hunter had never thought that it was excellent and had gone along with it all the way, but it hadn’t seemed terrible. Vidette had needed his help, and he had said that he would help her because he was her friend and this was what friends did for each other. He was sure that if he ever needed her to go pick up something at the drug store for him, she would do it without question because she was his friend and she wouldn’t even think twice about it. That was the kind of person that Hunter had always strove to be, and it was never extremely difficult for the young man that was already so mild and kind hearted to begin with. This had been a stretch, but Hunter had been very sure that he could handle this task once he actually got in the store and was there instead of just dreading it. However, he had been very, very wrong. Usually when you just made yourself do something, it never turned out to be as bad as you thought it was going to be. This was the one case in which that was incorrect, as this was absolutely humiliating and Hunter had no idea what he was doing here. He had gone to the store with his sisters before when they were purchasing all their feminine products but Hunter, and his brother Kade, had always found less awkward aisles to be in while Kay and Amy took care of that. Jared was the one with no shame and couldn’t be embarrassed by anything that you threw at him. He should be the one standing here staring down these pregnancy tests….
Hunter hadn’t thought that he had had any other choice but to call Vidette, but she didn’t seem too impressed with him on the other end of the line. What did she mean he was kidding her? Of course he wasn’t kidding her; this was not funny, it wasn’t a game. He really had no idea what he was looking at or what she wanted. And what did the most convincing one sound like? All of them said that they had a high percentage of accuracy, but some of them were obviously different from the others. They ranged in price, some had digital read outs and others claimed to give more accurate results sooner. They were all boxes with words on them, but it seemed to be such a drastic change from one to the next and it made Hunter nervous. What if he got some cheap, generic kind that gave Vidette incorrect results? There were more options here than she had led him to believe there would be, and he hadn’t been lying when he had said he was in over his head. It wasn’t like he and any of his previous girlfriends had had pregnancy scares, thank goodness. And, if his exes had purchased one of these things, they hadn’t told him about it and had left him completely out of the purchasing process. Then she was telling him to just grab more than just one kind, which seemed like the logical thing to do, yes? Vidette had already told Hunter to pick up more than just one, so that she could do a few and compare results, but she had failed to mention about this brand and type business. Hunter nodded his head slowly, dark eyes scanning the shelf before him when he heard what sounded an awful lot like laughing on the other end of the phone. “You’re seriously laughing right now?” he asked, his voice still that same hushed, low tone. Of course she was laughing; the situation that the two of them were in was freaking hilarious.
“I’m glad you think this is funny!” Hunter ended the call, shoving the cell phone back into his pocket before he looked back at the shelf. He just needed to get the hell out of there, so he did what she instructed and picked up three boxes, all different brands and all seeming to way a ton in his hands as he turned and headed for the checkout. He tried to tuck the boxes up under his arm and out of sight from the other shoppers around him, tried to make it look like he wasn’t as flustered as he really was, and tried to keep his cool as he made it up to the checkout counter and sat the three boxes down. It was like he could practically feel the eyes boring into him, seeing what he was buying and everyone speculating just why Hunter Trent was buying pregnancy tests, and three boxes of them at that. The cashier was some high school kid that Hunter didn’t quite recognize, and she seemed almost as embarrassed to ring the tests up as Hunter was to buy them. He heard the amount and barely registered the thought of how much they cost before throwing the cash down, wishing the younger girl were more competent and could count out his change quickly and bag the items. It seemed like it took forever, and when she finally handed him the small paper bag, he gave her an awkward nod before practically bolting from the store before he died right there on the spot. Hunter looked down at his feet the whole time he was walking to his car, his strides long and fast moving as though he were literally trying to run away from the people in the store. He didn’t even look at Vidette as he climbed back into the driver’s seat of his car, but just held out the little bag for her and stared straight ahead.
She took the bag, and Hunter still just sat there for a moment, not moving or even seeming to breathe. When he did finally turn his head to look at her, it was like he had truly been traumatized by that experience. “Remind me again why I had to do that?” Of course she would have good reason, and of course he would never be able to hold a grudge against her for this. Hunter started the car up and put it into gear. “Where to next? He assumed that it was back to where he had gotten her from, but Hunter glanced over at Vidette and caught the look that she was flashing him. “Wha-… oh no… And then he knew exactly what she wanted, and where she wanted to go. As if buying the tests hadn’t been enough, now he was going to have to have sit there on pins and needles with her as well as she actually put these things to use. The boy could do nothing but sigh.
