the streets of arietta were practically bare and there was hardly any of the usual downtown traffic since the whole town gathered to witness the marriage of miranda james and jared trent. lucas was good friends with them both but that just wasn't his scene. he wasn't going to show up to a place where he didn't want to be and put on a fake front, that just wasn't him and both randi and jared knew that. afterall, the last wedding lucas attended ended in a brawl when he was eighteen. so it was better to stay away from this one! having the day to himself didn't bother lucas and he almost considered showing up to the reception just to drink and have a good time, but then ultimately decided against it. if someone wanted to find him, they knew where he lived - and by that someone he meant someone off his list of girls. it had become a lifestyle to have frequent one night stands and not settle down. a lot of it had to do with his father who walked out on lucas and his mother when he was five. his mother tried to tell him it was for his job, but lucas knew there was another woman in the picture. you would think that seeing how devestated his mom was might have taught lucas to become a one woman kind of guy, but it became the complete opposite and from a young age, lucas bounced from girl to girl and moved on after he got bored enough. lucas did hook up with few of the same girls over and over again, but other than that there was no commitment involved and the boy didn't really desire any anyways. sure, it got serious sometimes when one girl may have came around more than the rest, but it never lasted long. lucas was positive he'd spend most of his years living this way. up until a week ago, lucas hadn't considered changing how he worked. last week on a normal morning jog on the beach, lucas accidently ran into hailey walker - literally - and she nearly ripped his head off because of it. at first, she had no reason to attack him like she did - she was bitter for no reason - but of course, lucas had to go and make everything that much more worse.
the twenty-one year old couldn't leave it alone as he made comments towards the girl that were typical of him but came off as rude to her. lucas and hailey's twin, hadley were friends with benefits and it was a plus for the boy that hailey looked exactly like hadley, since he found her extremely attractive. he might have taken the wrong approach to get to know her and he found that out the hard way. she ended up hitting him with her shoe that was filled with sand in response to a crude suggestion he made. it was a total game of cat and mouse, one she wasn't interested in playing but lucas was down for the chase. it wasn't that he wasn't getting her signals - she wanted him to go away and disappear, no doubt - but he just couldn't settle for that. she was too intriguing for him to ignore like she was some other girl. her differences from the rest of the girls attracted him and he wanted to get to know her more than ever. usually, lucas could care less what your name was or where you came from, all he wanted was to get down and dirty without any conversation. he had a reputation for breaking hearts and sleeping around, it was no surprise, but he definitely didn't have a rep of dating a girl. it would come as a shock that lucas wanted to get to know hailey and not just make out with her like the rest. apart of lucas felt it was easier to hook up than have a serious relationship; he could do as he pleased without ever answering to anyone but himself and he liked being independent like that. he wasn't going to let some girl take that away from him! it was a different story with hailey, though and she was the first one to actually make him think past a one night stand. during his meeting with hailey, she managed to point out her promise ring and announced that if he wanted that from her, he might as well go find her sister because he wouldn't find that there with her. after all that was said and done, it had lucas considering what he wanted from her exactly and he had come to the conclusion of everything but what he had with other girls.
he wanted to be able to know hailey past her first name. his first impression definitely didn't get him anywhere with the girl but that didn't stop him from going crazy thinking about her. he couldn't get the brunette off his mind and even during his regular hook up with her twin, hadley, he couldn't shake the thought of her. a few days after running into hailey on the beach, hadley and him planned a hook up and when they were right in the middle of what lucas wanted, he went into idiot mode and began babbling about hailey instead of letting his lips do all the talking with hadley's mouth. he had to admit though he liked the feeling hadley during the session when she got pissed. she was a lot more rough, but that didn't stop him from thinking about hailey either. ever since that day, that was the only girl he ever wanted to be with and she was running through his mind constantly. all hook ups up until this point had been a routine and it hadn't been as much fun as before he met hailey. it was like he wasn't there all the way and he just continued on with the pace of life while being mesmerized by hailey walker. lucas turned the corner in his black ford truck in search of some place to eat. there was absolutely nothing to eat at his place and he didn't feel like going to his mom's to raid her fridge so he was driving around downtown arietta looking for a place that sounded appetizing. as he came to a red light, lucas gently tapped on the brake and let a small sigh escape his lips. he reached forward to change the track on his emeniem cd and just as he looked back up to see if the light had change, his chocolate eyes caught sight of a brunette girl walking through the crosswalk in front of his truck. there was hailey walker walking through town alone and at first, lucas didn't know how to react. he was careful not to mess up for a second time and this time around he wanted things to be different.
without giving his reaction much thought, lucas pressed his hand on the horn and watched the brunette, who was coming close to the end of the crosswalk, jump a bit from the noise that broke through the silence. lucas watched her turn around and saw her eyes meet his and once he gave a small wave, he watched her turn back around and stomp off. that day wasn't just a bad day of her's, he was beginning to think she was this bitter all the time. lucas didn't think twice as he stepped on the gas and took off in the direction of hailey. he wasn't going to let the girl get away this time and he was hoping his chances were better than the last. he saw the brunette walking at a fast pace down the street looking like she had no destination in mind. girls loved a gentleman and he would be a gentleman if he offered her a ride, right? "hey stranger," the boy spoke with a smile as he pulled his truck next to her. "you need a lift?" he noticed she didn't even take a second to glance in his direction as he glanced around. he wasn't looking to make another big scene like she had last week and he hoped she'd be kind enough to accept his offer for what it was and take the ride. it was the least he could do since she denied his offer for coffee! there was no hidden adjenda with this girl and he simply wanted to give her a ride. he wasn't going to try and take advantage of her because he was beginning to like her more than the rest and he surprised himself with that. lucas bit his bottom lip and called out to her once more, "come on, hailey!" he hoped she would give up this act soon and give him another chance since the first time he made himself look like a complete fool.

Hailey slammed her phone shut in frustration. Once again her call went straight to voicemail. Her entire family was gone, off somewhere doing their own things and Hailey was stuck here, unable to get into her house. It figured that everyone would leave whenever she needed them to be here. What was really frustrating her was that no one had their phones on. Whenever someone attempted to call her and her phone was off she was chewed out about not answering it, usually by Hadley, who felt all calls she made were important. But when she was trying to get a hold of them? That was a completely different story. They were allowed to turn their phones off and ignore her. She sighed and opened her phone up again, dialing her father’s cell phone once again. She held it to her ear and waited, the call going straight to voicemail again. She left a message, again, and then ended the call, trying her mother’s again. The same things occurred. She already knew it was a lost cause, but she tried Hadley’s cell phone again. Nothing. She slammed the phone shut again after leaving her sister another message. Everyone was going to turn their phones on and be swarmed with a hundred messages from the young girl, and some of them had stopped being pleasant after the fifth or sixth time as she grew increasingly frustrated. This seemed to be a common occurrence lately, Hailey getting extremely frustrated for one reason or another and losing her temper. She was really a nice and pleasant girl, but those that caught her in these moods wouldn’t have really believed it. The girl had a mean temper when someone got on her nerves enough, and today was just turning into one of those days.
A thought suddenly came to Hailey. There was a huge tree outside Hadley’s window, and she was constantly sneaking out that way and bringing people in. She thought about it and contemplated it and quickly decided it was worth a try. It was better than being stuck outside her house until only God knew when. She walked around to the side of the house, glancing up at the tree. It would be an interesting climb, but Hailey was willing to do it if it meant getting into her house. She threw her stuff on the ground and walked up to the tree, jumping up to grab a hold of the lowest branch and hoisting herself up. It was a good thing she was somewhat athletic, otherwise she probably wouldn’t have very good odds of getting herself up to the top. She started climbing, finding branches that looked like they would support her weight and testing them before she put all of her weight on it. She found soon reached her sister’s window. Once she had her balance she pushed against, trying to hoist it up. Nothing. She stared at it, examining the latch and seeing that it was locked. Seriously? Today, of all days, Hadley decided to lock her window? Why? She sighed, then slowly worked her way down the tree. She was going to have to have a talk with Hadley about not locking her damn window. Typically her argument would be for her doing such a thing, but considering she was locked out of the house she would have been happier had it not been locked. Now she was stuck.
It was fairly cold outside, and so Hailey gave up on standing and waiting for her family. They could not be back for hours or until after dark. It was pointless for her to just stand there and wait for them. So instead she was going to have to find something to do until someone turned on their phone and called her. She situated her bag on her shoulder and took off down the street, not really knowing where she was going to go but figuring she would figure it out whenever she got there. She was feeling kind of hungry, so maybe she’d stop in one of the restaurants and get herself something to eat. She could depend on anyone getting back soon, so that seemed like a pretty good idea. She was crossing the street when it happened. There was a loud honk of a horn. She jumped in surprise and looked up to see the guy from the beach, Lucas, sitting in the driver’s side. Well this day just couldn’t get any worse, could it? Her eyes narrowed and she turned and continued to stalk off in the direction she had been going before he had interrupted her. It seemed to be a habit of his, though, this following her when she stormed off. She could hear his truck following beside her before he spoke. "Hey stranger." She didn’t look at him but just continued to walk. "You need a lift?" No, she didn’t. And especially not from him. Hailey was perfectly content with walking. "Come on, Hailey!" She finally stopped and turned to look at him. “Why should I?” she asked him, crossing her arms over her chest. She listened to what he had to say, but she wasn’t completely convinced. Her only motivation was that it was warm in his truck, and at the moment she was freezing. “Fine,” she said reluctantly and climbed into the passenger side. It was definitely warmer. She sat all the way close to the door, as far from him as she could get. She didn’t really trust him, but she was freezing, so it was the question of which evil she preferred. She was seriously wondering if the cold wouldn’t be better, though.

apart of him was expecting hailey to put up an arguement and the other half had a glimmer of hope that she'd just put a smile on her face and hop in. he pressed his lips together and placed a hand under his chin before shrugging at her statement. "it's cold." was his best answer and he knew she was thinking the exact same thing. no one in their right state of mind would be casually walking around town at this temperature! he wasn't sure why he came outside today with this slight chill in the air but he soon remembered why when a slight growl irritated his stomach. lucas found himself breathing a sigh of relief as he watched the brunette climb in his truck. thankfully, it wasn't prolonged and ended up in somewhat of a good outcome - so far. with any other girl he wouldn't have had to try so hard, any other would have jumped in his truck willingly and not put up a pout right before caving in. after taking notice to how close she was to the door and how far away from him, he chuckled and found it amusing, recalling just a few weeks ago when hadley was in her seat and practically on his lap. he slightly shook his head, he didn't know sitting within such a short distance of him could cause her some horrid disease. as he began to pull away from the curb, lucas reached forward and turned up the music a bit more - not that it was very loud when he first approached her - and found himself getting lost within the beats as he softly repeated word after word of the rap song before clearing his throat and remembering he wasn't the only one in the vehicle any longer. he adjusted himself in his seat and leaned forward a bit to give the seatbelt a bit of slack as he glanced over at hailey and then back on the road with really no destination ahead. "so," he paused trying to start a conversation she wasn't willing to let form, "are you hungry? i thought we could, maybe, grab something to eat." his tone was cautious and he was expecting her to rip his head off for even asking.
he allowed him self to think of the worst possible situation - she would say no and in his eyes, that could be the worst. he decided if they were going to eat, he wasn't going to take her to some high class place because hailey being hailey, she'd accuse him of trying to seduce her. lucas glanced over at the brunette to see her eyes focused on the road before her as she ignored his question. they were going to get absolutely nowhere if this kept on. lucas didn't give her a chance to answer as he noticed the familar red and white sign with the yellow writing come into plain view. "alright..." he shrugged off the silence. suddenly, the boy hooked a sharp right hand turn into the parking lot and within seconds the vehicle was parked comfortably using two parking spots and he was hopping out of the truck, leaving hailey to decide if she'd like to join or not. he wasn't going to push something on her and force her to join him. she'd either have to endure the temperature outside or join him inside the fast food chain where it had a much comfortable warmth. lucas was swinging the door open and glancing over his shoulder to see the brunette nowhere insight as he pressed his lips together and shook his head. he wasn't sure what else he could do to prove all her thoughts about him wrong. he was offering her a ride and wanting to by lunch for her - would a true jackass do that? he didn't think so! there was a few people before him in line and as lucas leaned on the wall to wait, he pulled out his phone to randomly press buttons and pass the time of waiting to place his order. lucas was hoping hailey would be nice enough to join him but he knew he still didn't have her totally convinced of who he truly was. she still had a false impression of him and he wasn't sure if he could ever have a clean record with her. he knew he had made a pretty ass move at the beach but she had to understand that was just a front.
the boy pressed his lips together and took a few strides forward and moved a few places in line as he continued to think about the brunette sitting in his truck. lucas was next in line as he approached to counter to announce his selection off the menu, "i'll take a burger, medium fry, and pepsi." lucas reached in his back pocket for his wallet as the cashier told him the amount. he flicked open his wallet and surveyed the green bills before pulling out the appropriate one only to notice a body joining his side. the brunette had decided to join him afterall and he nodded his head towards the menu and gestured for her to order and he'd pay. he looked down at the counter as he heard her place her order and then dug through his wallet once more for a few more bills before handing the money over to the worker and taking the reciept in exchange. lucas stood off to the side to wait for his order and he was surprised when hailey joined his side again. he shot her a quick smile only to have her look away and most likely roll her eyes and that caused his small smile to grow. he loved the way she hated him. it only made him want to be that much less player status when around her. he folded his arms and rubbed the back of his head with his hand before shoving his hands in his pockets completely. the pair didn't have to wait long for the food as lucas grabbed the tray and hailey chose the seating. he followed behind the brunette until they slipped into a booth and for a moment, he considered sitting right next to her but instead he chose the seat opposite of her. lucas took a seat before grabbing his food and pushing the tray towards her. he sipped on his drink and silence rushed over the pair as he unwrapped his burger and took a bite before settling his gaze on the brunette.

Hailey was not happy to be here, not in the slightest. This boy beside her irritated her in just about every way possible. She didn’t think she had ever really disliked anyone more than she disliked him. He had insulted her in so many ways within the first few minutes of their meeting, and she had only gotten him to leave her alone when she had threatened him with bodily harm. There was a chance he wouldn’t have meant what she said she would do, but something had clearly registered because she had managed to escape him. But now she was hear, stuck in a confined space with him. She didn’t like it, either. Hailey had hoped that she would never see this guy again. That they would never be here doing this song and dance again. But of course such things couldn’t happen to Hailey. She was a good girl, but nothing ever seemed to go her way. She hated this town and she hated this person. She didn’t want to be here, in this place, but this was where she was stuck. She had been trying to make the most of it, but her displeasure at being here could only grow. She missed the city, and that was something she never thought she would miss before. She had always loved the country. She had loved the fresh air and the open space. But now she missed the craziness and noise that came with the city. She had thought that with time she could learn to like it here, but so far it hadn’t happened. The only time she really did like it was when she got to be at the barn with her horses. They were the one thing she truly loved here and they were where she spent most of her time.
She was starting to wish she was there right now. "So, are you hungry? I thought we could, maybe, grab something to eat." Oh had he? Well that wasn’t going to happen. She sat staring out the window of the truck and decided that saying nothing was better than replying. She held her tongue, knowing that if she spoke she would say something mean or unbecoming. Hailey really was a pleasant girl. She was nice to just about everyone and wasn’t at all mean by nature. Though to see her interact with this guy one would never be able to tell. He rubbed her the wrong way, and Hailey just couldn’t be completely civil around him. She was now here with him in this truck slightly against her will, too, which did not make her any happier to be here. "Alright..." And then he turned the wheel of the truck sharply, throwing her in her seat slightly. She looked at him, annoyed, but said nothing. He pulled into the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. He parked and exited the truck, almost like he expected her to follow but she didn’t. Instead, she just sat there. She watched as he walked into the building, and that was when she lost sight of him. She sighed, leaning her head against the window. Truthfully, Hailey was somewhat hungry, but she wasn’t about to admit so and subject herself to him. The last thing she wanted was to owe him any favors, because if their first meeting said anything she had a good idea about what they would be and that was not happening. Instead of entering the building she sat in the truck, withdrawing her cell phone from her pocket to once again try and reach one of her family members. She tried her mother, then her father, and then Hadley, once again her calls going straight to voicemail and frustrating her even more.
She sat there, determined that she was going to stay there until he came back. But it wasn’t long before the truck was cooling off and she was starting to shake slightly from the cold. She groaned in annoyance and grabbed her bag, opening up the truck door and slamming it shut. She stalked to the entrance and found Lucas standing at the front of the line, taking a spot next to him, her facial expression still looking annoyed. He nodded to the menu and she glanced at it briefly, but didn’t really choose anything. “Whatever he got,” she said blankly, her arms crossed over chest in slight defiance. Just because she was here didn’t mean she was thrilled about it. Hailey had no idea what she was actually ordering as she hadn’t heard what it was he had gotten, but she figured it couldn’t be completely horrible. He handed over the money, which slightly irritated Hailey, but as she had no money on her she couldn’t really object. Her wallet, usually in her bag, was still sitting on her desk in her room. She was silently kicking herself for that. She waited with him as they got the food, then chose and random booth and sat down, throwing her bag in before her. She watched and waited, thinking that if he decided to sit next to her instead of across from her she would lose it and kick him out. Thankfully it didn’t come to that, though, and she didn’t have to resort to such things.
She took her hamburger from the tray and unwrapped it, almost frightened to see what she would find but finding that it was acceptable. The only problem she had was that there was stuff on it. Hailey enjoyed her food plain without all the junk piled on top and immediately started with trying to remove the unwanted items. She could feel him watching her, though. She glanced up at him. “What?” she asked in her typical irritated voice. With all the stuff of the sandwich she put the bun back on top and took a bite. She could still taste all the pickles and onions and mustard and such, but she tolerated it and chewed slowly. God she didn’t want to be here.
