sliding into her seat across micah, twenty-four year old lainey shot the boy a smile before accepting the menu from the hostess as she set her purse beside her in the booth. earlier in the day, micah had stopped by fire and ice - the small cafe she worked at as a waitress - and personally invited her out to dinner - the brunette was estatic and of course, eagerly agreed. she rushed to her arietta lake house after her six p.m. shift ended and prepared herself for tonight's dinner. lainey had known micah for what seemed like forever now; they were childhood friends and he witnessed her throughout her awkward phases as a child like wearing braces and surviving the heriarchey of middle school. she always found the blond boy good looking and when he began showing an interest in her, it was no surprise the change lead them to tonight. micah and lainey weren't really a couple yet, they did couple type things and fit time into each of their busy schedules to see eachother, he held her hand and left her with a goodnight kiss, she gushed about their date to her closes girlfriends, and it became an automatic rule not to see anyone else. unfortunately, lainey was totally oblivious to notice micah was playing her right underneath her nose. "thanks for inviting me." lainey broke the silence as her gaze landed on micah after placing her hand gently under her chin and returned his sweet smile with one of her own. dave and buster's wasn't exactly romantic, but she knew micah knew her well enough to know that she didn't care how classy a restraunt was. he also seemed to remember she was kick ass at pool and video games like dave and buster's carried. her free spirit belonged at the sport's bar and she perferred that - and fire and ice - over some high end itallian place anyday, even though her weakness was itallian food since it was in her blood and apart of her hertiage.
the night held a lot to look forward to since anytime lainey was out with micah, it ended on a good note and left the brunette smiling the rest of the night. the girl wasn't against relationships whatsoever, in fact she sucked at having them, but things with micah weren't stressful and they didn't have the regular pressure normal couples had. she liked the fact that he chose to hang out with her at dave and buster's when he could easily be grabbing drinks with his boys. he showed up at her work regularly just to say hi and left her sweet text messages to read when she woke up. lainey couldn't be happier with where things were with micah. "um, i'll just take a pepsi please." lainey said sweetly once the waiter appeared to take their drink orders. "so after dinner, i'm thinking we should play pool and you should be super sweet and let me win like you always do." followed by a laugh, lainey glanced over at the game area. obvious bachelors were gathered playing pool with a round of beers and complaining about their exes - some even finding common ground figuring out they shared an ex or two - then there were the sexy girls huddled in the corner, giggling and not caring they were singing obnoxiously loud to the current britney spears song playing through the speakers nearby them. lainey's gaze resurfaced on micah once more as she heard his voice, which instantly made her smile. she nodded her head in excitement - hanging out for a while after dinner sounded just like what lainey had in mind. leaning her head to the side as she raised her eyebrows, lainey bit her bottom lip. "ten bucks says that guy will leave with that readhead and forget to mention he has a wife and kid at home. meanwhile, her friend over there, will leave just like she came - alone." just like micah, lainey let out a sweet laugh. it was fun to sit back and poke fun at people who didn't know they were being made fun of. crossing her legs, lainey glanced up to see the waiter bringing their drinks by and ready to take their orders. lainey's brown eyes shot down at the menu, allowing micah to go first so she can decide between two entrees that sounded appetizing to her. while many girls ordered small salads and water with lemon, lainey chose to go a different route - bring on the burger and pepsi! handing the menu over to the waiter, lainey heard micah speak again as her eyebrows raised in question. "nothing, nothing. grey's got me working a bit of overtime since grace is on maternity leave. other than that, i've been with mykayla and helping randi with whatever i can on the wedding. i babysat for nathan twice this week, probably once more tomorrow night too." the brunette said in reply to micah's question about what she's been up to lately.
a cell phone began ringing just as lainey was about to say something else. she reached over and dug through her purse to see it wasn't her cell phone that was going off. her eyes darted across the table to see micah shoving his back in his pocket. sliding her purse back over in the seat, lainey focused her eyes on micah. his cell phone usually rang and he usually ignored like he always did, but something wasn't settling right with her and it was screaming that there was more to missing a call from his 'mom' than she knew. lainey was completely faithful to micah - even though they were in a bit of a 'no strings attached' type relationship - and knowing that he wasn't would eventually tear her apart when she found out. lainey pretended not to notice and to be interested in the other people filling the place tonight as the boy across from her pulled out his cell phone to check the missed call or awaiting text he had. her fake attention was torn from the strangers as micah's voice floated across the table and into her ears.

Micah was a private man above all else, valuing space and peace more than anything. For the majority of his life, people would push their way in and attempt to get to know him, dig deep down to the bottom of his soul and discover his deepest, darkest secrets. They wanted to know every detail, every freckle on his back or every fleck of gray in his blue eyes. They wanted to study and analyze and pick him apart, and that wasn't necessarily something that Micah was comfortable with. He didn't want to get so involved with a person that they knew more about him than he knew about himself. He didn't want someone to uncover all of his bad habits and nervous ticks, nor did he want someone to know his work schedule and pay him routine, daily visits with his favorite lunch sandwhich in a brown paper bag. There was no need for someone to know what his favorite childhood memory was and refer back to it whenever he seemed down about something. Yes, Micah was a romantic and he did prefer relationships over flings and one night stands, but he never could focus on only one girl at a time. It was a horrible thing - but something that he had come to accept about himself - and if each of those girls were interested in his life story and the mystery behind his indifferent facade, he was somewhat required to spill some juicy details. Most of the stuff he told them was false, not wanting to give up the real story of his past or what made him so closed off and secretive in the first place. There was only one person in the world who knew the true story - his younger sister, Dashiell - and that was precisely how he liked it. Micah enjoyed the company of women and the way he could make them feel, and when he noticed that one of his girls was beginning to get too attached, he'd break it off in the sweetest way possible and find another lady to take her place. They filled the dark void that was left behind after that night from so many years ago, and while it wasn't the most gratifying way to ease the pain, it worked.
Currently, he sat across from the most beautiful out of all of his girlfriends. Lainey was gorgeous, true model material with the body of a goddess. She was intelligent and down to earth and, so far, she didn't push to know everything about him as if her life depended on it. She was a sweet girl, and definitely Micah's favorite to date. "Thank you for joining me," he replied, smiling over at her from across the table. Despite the fact that Micah always felt an insatiable need to wine and dine the ladies he dated in the most romantic way possible, he felt totally at ease amidst the wild environment of Dave and Buster's. Truth be told, he had never taken a girl here before, but he knew that Lainey wasn't the ordinary type of woman. She preferred to have fun and let loose in a pair of jeans, knocking back a bear and eating a burger than to slip on a dress and sip some wine, cutting into the finest and most expensive steak on the menu. It was one of the many things that Micah liked about her; she was different, and fun, and he honestly enjoyed the time he spent with her. Since meeting her, he often wished that he had the ability to be genuinely monogamous; breaking things off with her would be ridiculously difficult, and that scared him. "Water," he said to the waiter, turning his attention back on Lainey as he walked away. Micah's eyebrow quirked upwards in amusement as she went on to suggest a game of pool. It was kind of cute that she knew that he let her win, but he shrugged his shoulders and feigned confusion, playful smirk still in place on his lips. "Maybe I'm just really bad at pool," he teased. Having owned a pool table since the age of six, Micah was actually rather good at the game. He wasn't about to clue her in on that though, despite the fact that she already figured it out for herself. "I'll tell you what - I'll play a fair game and if you win, you get to come back to my place, and if I win, you get to come back to my place. Deal?" No, he wasn't looking to get lucky with her that night or anything, though it wasn't out of the question and he wouldn't mind one bit. But he really just wanted to spend more time with her, and what better way to do so than cuddled up on his couch with a movie and some popcorn? He laughed at her next statement, glancing over his shoulder to see the group in question, and he nodded his head in agreement. "She looks too naive for her own good. Her poor friend will be stuck here without a ride and will be forced to call a cab, all the while being hit on by that big guy a few seats away. He's probably been checking her out the whole night." While he joked around about that sort of thing, what Lainey had said still rang in his mind. "...forgot to mention he has a wife and kid at home." Micah didn't have a wife or a kid, but he had several other relationships on the side that he had never mentioned to her, so wasn't he guilty of doing the same thing? He wouldn't consider Lainey naive by any means, but wasn't he tricking her into believing that they were in a monogamous relationship and tying her down when he was seeing other women? For the first time in a while, Micah actually felt guilty.
"So, what have you been up to lately, beautiful?" he asked after the waiter had taken their orders and left with the menus. His stomach growled anxiously with the prospect of eating the bacon cheeseburger he ordered, but he focused his attention on the girl sitting across from him as she answered. He opened his mouth to comment on her response when the sound of his cell phone had him snapping it shut, reaching into his pocket to retrieve the offensive device. Incoming Call from Elliot Donovan flashed across his screen, and it was easier than usual to hit the Ignore button and shove his phone back into his pocket, just as Lainey looked up from checking her own phone. "Sorry about that. My mom has this habit of calling at the most inappropriate times." He plastered a smile on his face and attempted to look sincere; lying wasn't his best quality, nor was he very good at it, but if he were to tell her who the call was really from, there was no doubt in his mind that she would suspect that something was up. "Anyway," he cleared his throat, leaning forward with his elbows on the table and his attention fully focused on Lainey. "Randi's wedding is coming pretty soon, isn't it? It's crazy to think that her and Jared are finally getting married. It's been a long time coming." His finger raised to run around the rim of his glass of water, looking around at the other people in the restaurant as he spoke. "We had this woman come in for an MRI this afternoon and she was claustrophobic, so she was moving all around inside the machine and we couldn't get a clear picture of her brain. She was screaming and thrashing about and, sadly enough, that was the highlight of my day." Micah smirked, a sigh passing his lips. He absolutely hated working in neurology; it was the most boring medical profession ever, especially when his attending wasn't allowing him to sit in and assist actual neuro-surgeries. His job now consisted of MRI's and cat scans and delivering bad news to patients, as opposed to the exciting and fast-paced atmosphere that he once thrived on when he worked in the emergency unit. Now his life just seemed dull and monotonous, and it sucked that he didn't have any cool trauma stories to tell Lainey like he used to. The waiter floated toward their table, placing their food in front of them and Micah was fairly certain that the entire restaurant could hear his stomach growl over the sounds of the games and the music.

lainey let out a small laugh at micah's response. "yeah and i'm a pro pool player." she joked back, brushing a stray piece of hair out of her face and behind her shoulder. things with micah were so relaxed and easy going, she enjoyed spending time with him. before micah, there was matt davidson. the star football player that lead the team to the playoff's a while back. the first time she met matt was at fire and ice when he came in with all his football buddies and after a few times of seeing him, the two grew to become great friends. soon after that, he invited her to a party where the two started their long relationship of hook ups. then micah came along and lainey decided to be just friends with matt and that caused a lot of conflict between the two. hearing micah strike up a deal, lainey raised her eyebrows in question. playfully placing a finger on her chin as she pretended to think it over, she reached across the table and stuck her hand out. "you got yourself a deal." after shaking hands with him, the brunette let out a small laugh before placing her hands in her lap. before long micah was playing along with her game of picking people apart and prediciting their future for the night. "god, we know people too well." things with matt were never like this. they didn't come to dave and buster's to talk about people, they came to play pool and drink and then sleep together after. a voice inside lainey told her things were better with micah, though. he didn't pressure her to do things she didn't want to and she honestly wore the pants in the relationship. micah wasn't faithful to lainey though and even though she gave their relationship everything she had, micah didn't do the same. he had been seeing multiple girls without her knowing and if she knew, it would literally kill her inside. everything she knew - even though it was hardly anything - would become a sudden lie. lainey was oblivious that her statement about a wife and kid had stuck inside the boy's head. all of his comments went in one ear and out the next after responding, but then again she had nothing to be guilty about and she didn't have to pretend like micah.
after hearing his apology, she nodded her head. "it's called silent." lainey said it without thinking twice and as soon as it left her mouth, she noticed her tone sounded sharper than it had before. the excuse of his mom calling could only last for so long before she'd have to question it further. for now, she shrugged it off and acted like it didn't bother her. stirring her straw around in the glass, lainey's eyes fluttered to micah as she nodded. "yeah, like in a few weeks. jared's always been most likely to get married first. i'm happy he found randi though; they're good for each other." lainey wasn't looking into marriage anytime soon but she was envious of randi and jared's relationship. she wondered what it was like to feel what they were feeling; to know the person beside you would be there for you until death do you part. the two of them had the rest of their life to figure out but they had each other and that struck lainey as what was most important. she wanted the kind of love someday like jared and randi had. eventually, she'd want to kick herself for dreaming of a life like that with a cheater. the brunette sipped on her pepsi as she nodded her head and listened to the story micah was sharing. "that's sad, micah! that's like having a liar take a lie detector test. you know it's not going to work, so why even bother?" she voiced her opinion without realizing the meaning held behind it. she watched micah clear his throat and reach for his water to take a long gulp. after realizing he was ok, lainey spoke once more. "so being a godmother is great and everything and i absolutely adore andrew," she paused, taking a sip of her pepsi before pressing her lips and continuing on afterwards. "but you know, it's hard looking at him without seeing andrea. i know it's been a while now but....she was my best friend and i can't imagine how hard nathan is struggling."
in high school, lainey was best friends with andrea - nathan's girlfriend - and a few years later, when andrea found out she was pregnant, she ended up dying. since lainey was best friends with her, nathan decided to make lainey their son's godmother and ever since then, lainey and nathan have been the best of friends. when she isn't working or busy with her own chores and daily duties, lainey babysits for nathan and watches after drew. lainey was about to say something else when the waiter appeared carrying their food and placing it in front of them. food never looked so good as lainey's stomach growled. she hadn't ate since her break during work earlier in the day and that was half of a grilled cheese after downing a soda. sticking one of her french fries in the pool of ketchup she poured onto her plate, lainey heard a cell phone go off again. she didn't even bother to check her own and she didn't even have to look across the table to see it was micah's phone ringing. glancing over at the table to see him looking down at his phone smiling, lainey cleared her throat. "tell your mom i said hi." the story of it being his mom was beginning to seem false as lainey glanced away from the boy across the table and stared down at her food. she considered, for a moment, saying something and being totally forward and asking him but then, she gulped down her instict and went back to eating her food. dragging french fries through ketchup and taking a few bites of her burger, the conversation seemed to die down a bit before micah started speaking again.
