Britt couldn’t believe she was standing here and doing this. She hadn’t thought she could, or that she would ever get the courage to make it even this far. But things had changed recently. Everything was out in the open now, and though that took a tremendous weight from the shoulders of the small blonde, it left her without a lot of uncertainty. She didn’t know how any of this was going to go. She didn’t know how anything was going to turn out or if this even made things okay. She just didn’t know what to do anymore, especially when it came to the subject of Kade Trent. But this here wasn’t about Kade. Okay, so it was a little bit about Kade, but not really. He certainly played a part in all of this, but that wasn’t something Britt was going to focus on right now. What she was going to focus on was the man she was going to see right now, and how much she owed him. Hunter Trent had played a very big role in Brittany Hale’s life, and without him she wouldn’t have been as okay as she was. But she had hurt him, and no matter how people told her that he had forgiven her, Britt just couldn’t accept that. Yes, Hunter was a good person. He was amazing in that way, but Britt just couldn’t believe that he could get over what she had did to him. She certainly hadn’t forgotten about it, and she felt extreme guilt over what had happened. She had broken, lost control of herself and she had done some pretty horrible things to people. Hunter was the one she felt the worst about. Because he was a good person, and he deserved so much better than that. Now that she had made peace with Kade she could do this with Hunter. So Britt climbed the steps to his front door, hesitating at the top for a moment before she slowly raised her hand and knocked on the door. Her stomach was turning into knots as she waited for him to open the door. She just hoped that he didn’t open up the door only to slam it in her face. She deserved it, but she didn’t know if that was something she could handle. She needed to say this, needed to get this out, but she knew she would lose any ounce of will she actually had to do it if he did something like that.

“You consider us friends, right?” Hunter sighed, eyelids closing over his dark brown eyes as he switched his cell phone to his other hand, bringing it to his other ear. “You’re my brother, and knowing you like I do, I’m half afraid to answer that question.” “But Hunterrrrr!” Hunter should have known that Jared would be wanting something whenever his name had popped up on the screen of his phone. Jared was a chatty kind of guy, but he didn’t often make phone calls to his brothers unless it was to ask some kind of favor. “No.” “But I didn’t even-“ “I said no, Jared. Find a new slave.” Hunter could practically see the amused grin that would come to his brother’s lips, him thinking of someway to torment Hunter into submission. That was when Hunter heard a car door outside of his home, and he made his way to one of the front windows to peer out, Jared going off on some kind of rant but Hunter not catching a word of it. He was far more interested in the fact that Brittany Hale was walking toward his house, as she was really the last person that Hunter would ever expect to pay him a visit. “Jared, I gotta go.” And then Hunter hung up on his older brother, knowing that Jared would probably continue to talk to him for another couple of minutes. That’s how long it would take him to realize Hunter had actually hung up. But, Jared could handle that. Hunter was just…confused, and a little bit shocked as he pulled himself away from the window and went to the door, hearing her light steps on the porch as she approached and knocked. It had been a very long time since he and Britt had exchanged any kind of words, even though they had walked down the aisle together at Jared and Randi’s wedding. That had been awkward, yes, but Hunter had thought that then would have been the time for them to speak again if it was ever going to happen. He opened the door, his confusion probably evident on his face as his dark eyes took her in, making sure that she was actually standing there. “Britt? What… what are you doing here?” It was just a question, asked because he really had no idea what would have prompted this kind of visit. Even so, he couldn’t say that he wasn’t a little glad to see her.

Britt waited nervously at the front door, not sure what was going to happen. She wasn’t even sure what she was going to say to him! Maybe this had been a bad idea. Maybe she could make a run for her car and get out of here before he opened that door. She wasn’t ready for this. She had thought she was, but now she wasn’t so sure. She had convinced herself to do this, to make a run for it, and was just turning to do so when the door opened. She froze. “Britt? What… what are you doing here?” She slowly turned and looked up at him, her blue eyes wide. She quickly looked down, unable to actually look him in the eye. “I…” She searched for the words, tried to find them, but there was nothing there. She took a deep breath and looked up at him and suddenly it all just rushed out of her. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for what I did and that I hurt and that I pushed you away. You were amazing to me and you didn’t have to be and I know that I shouldn’t have done it but I just didn’t know how to deal with it all. I didn’t know to be without him.” She stopped, the tears had gathered in her eyes, and she was fighting hard to keep her tears from falling from her eyes. She spoke again, but this time more slowly. “I know this is far too late. But I am sorry. I never meant for things to turn out like they did.” She felt so truly bad for how she had treated him. Hunter wasn’t probably the most amazing person on the face of the planet, and there wasn’t a girl out there that deserved him. He was so great like that. She had cared about him. She still did, but Britt was starting to think that there was only one guy out there that she could be with, and with things the way they were she just didn’t know if that would ever happen again. They had been through so much. But right now, what was important was her and Hunter and Britt giving him this long overdue apology. And now that it was out there, all she could do was wait to see what he was going to do or say. Whatever it was, she was more than sure she deserved it.

There wasn’t a person in this town that didn’t know the saga of Brittany Hale and the Trent’s. It had been rather boring to start with, just her being good friends with them, Jared and Hunter often treating her like a little sister when she and Kade were obviously meant to be so much more than that. Then, that had actually happened, Britt able to inspire feelings in the oldest Trent brother’s heart that other women before her had failed to. They had been in love, Hunter betting that they would have been married without any kind of doubt until she had gotten pregnant and they had fallen apart so rapidly. Hunter knew that Kade had messed up, and he knew that his brother would regret what he had done, but Hunter wasn’t the type of guy to just stand by and let things happen to people. He had stepped in and tried to make up for Kade’s wrong doings and in the process and seen what his brother had always seen in Britt. She was an amazing girl, and though her heart was still with Kade, Hunter found himself a place there too. It was stupid and foolish to get mixed up in something like that, but at the same time he couldn’t help it. His heart had fallen for her, and then she had just taken all that away in one moment after she had lost her baby and her brother. Now here they were, all this time after, and Hunter didn’t know what to say to her. Luckily, she seemed to have a lot to say, and he only had to stand there and listen to her apology. “Britt…” He looked at her with sympathy in his dark brown eyes, hating the tears that he saw form in hers. “It’s okay. Believe it or not, I understood. And you never had to apologize. All you had to do was talk to me.” Because honestly, he had been under this impression that she had wanted nothing to do with him at all. “But, if you have to hear me say it, I forgive you. I forgave you a long time ago. I know how things were then… I don’t blame you for any of it.” He offered her a warm smile then, glad to finally have this moment with this girl that still meant a lot to him despite all that had happened.
