Emily looked at the time on her alarm clock and neatly printed her last set of ideas down on the lined sheet of paper in front of her. She had at least managed to plan out the entirety of her essay tonight. Now, normally she would have finished her first draft by the end of the night, but Alister had persuaded her into taking the night off. Emily usually flat out refused requests like this, but she had come to realize that she actually quite enjoys spending time with Alister. One night couldn't put her too far behind on her work. She was quite pleased with her plan for it anyways, so she was sure she could get rid of one of her days of editing before the due date, which was the following week. Emily grabbed her book bag, that she also used as a purse, and placed it over her shoulder. She then released her hair from the bun it was in, revealing perfect, effortless curls. This was the main reason why some girls didn't like Emily in high school; she didn't put a whole lot of effort into the way she looked, and she still ended up looking adorable. Emily bounced down the stairs of her home, and quickly made her way out to the car. She probably should have been arriving at this time, not finishing her homework and beginning the drive. She could always use the female excuse that she was getting ready, but Emily had a problem with lying. She simply wouldn't do it. Starting her car, she drove in the direction of Alister's home, which luckily wasn't too far from her own.
Once Emily had arrived, she hopped out of her car and made her way up the driveway to the front door. She knocked, rubbing her goosebump covered arms as she waited. She mentally kicked herself for forgetting to wear a jacket tonight, but it didn't surprise her in the least that working on her homework prevented her from getting fully ready for a night out. This was why she didn't bother going out much in the first place. She would much rather spend her nights in. Once Alister had finally opened the door, she gave him a light smile. "Sorry I'm late!" She told him genuinely. She may not have really wanted to come out tonight, but she enjoyed Alister's company and she hoped she hadn't kept him waiting long. "So, please tell me you aren't going to keep me in suspense. What are we doing tonight?" She asked, hoping it wasn't something that could get her into trouble. Like she had told him before, they had different ideas of what fun was. tagged: alister deville notes: not proud of this at all ): i promise they'll get better with time! haha appearance: click here

Alister James Deville Alister hadn't meant for tonight to turn into any sort of date, if it could be called that. He wasn't really sure where his feelings stood about Emily, nor how she felt about him. It was just impossible to decide whether she was just a friend, or if he still wanted more from her. Well, that wasn't completely true. Alister knew what he'd originally wanted from her, but Emily wasn't like most of the girls he met. She hadn't given into his charm or flirting, and she'd been perfectly polite when she'd rejected him. Part of his pride wouldn't let him give up that easily, and another part of him actually wanted her to like him.
It was hard to admit that to himself though. Alister knew how much having feelings for someone could really hurt you in the end. He'd had his heart broken before. That was one part of tonight that made him nervous, because after the trouble he'd gone through to put the lights on his boat and then rush back home to get ready so he could see Emily, it certainly felt like he was treating it as a date. He wasn't entirely sure if he was ready for that yet, but he'd already invited her, so he didn't really have a choice now. Alister figured that if he'd gone through all that effort without thinking about it, then at least a little part of him was ready for something more than a one night stand with Emily.
When he'd gotten back home and finished getting ready, he'd sat around and waited for the time to come for Emily to arrive, but she hadn't shown up yet. He wondered very briefly if maybe she'd stood him up, but then discarded the idea. Emily was really sweet. She wouldn't do that to him without at least calling first, so he waited. Sure enough, fifteen minutes later, there was a knock at his door. Alister smiled and got up from the couch, making his way to the door and opening it for her. It always amazed him how beautiful she looked without even trying, and her smile and apology made it easy to forget about the extra time he'd spent waiting for her.
Alister walked outside to join her, closing the door behind him. In response to her question he said, "It's alright, and I am actually. I think you'll enjoy this more if it's a surprise when you see it. We're just going to the marina though. You don't have to worry." Luckily, Alister's house was walking distance from the marina and he'd grown up around boats. Usually when he wanted to impress a girl, he'd take them on his parent's yacht, but that was if he was looking to get laid. Emily was different. He actually liked her, so they were going to his personal boat. It wasn't nearly as big, but he thought that was better for what he had planned.
Alister took her hand in his and said, "Come on, it's not a far walk and then you'll see what I did. I promise you'll like it." With that, he started leading her towards the marina, his excitement growing just a little more with the thought of what her reaction might be. It only took about five minutes of walking for them to get there, but it was pretty obvious where they were headed once they arrived. Alister's boat was lit up with simple white lights, but the effect in the darkness was beautiful. As they approached the boat, Alister let his hand slip away from hers and asked, "So what do you think? I was right about it being a good surprise, wasn't I?" He found himself hoping that she did, and that the rest of the night would go well for the both of them. Emily was the kind of girl that deserved something special at the very least, and this was what he'd come up with off the top of his head. Now he'd just have to see if it was good enough.

"The marina?" Emily questioned, wondering why on earth they would be going there. That was probably one of the last places she would have expected to go tonight. She stopped worrying about it the moment he told her not to though. She trusted him. She had heard stories about Alister Deville, even experienced his flirtatious ways first hand. However, she had also seen his kindness first hand; how he could genuinely be a friendly guy. That was why Emily decided to be friends with Alister. She had been told that he was trying to get in her pants, but all she ever saw was a boy saying things to make her smile. When he took her hand, she turned her head towards him and smiled. Emily had already begun to forget about the homework she could have been working on tonight, and that's saying a lot for her.
"You think you know what I like?" She asked. She didn't sound flirtatious or sexual like most girls would say that line. No, she said it sweetly; innocently, like the way she said anything. She shivered from the cold and involuntarily gave his hand a tight little squeeze as they finally arrived at the docks. Her eyes then set upon a beautifully lit up boat. She stared at it in awe as he gently pulled her closer to it, not releasing her hand until they were right in front of it. He had done this for her? "Alister, this looks amazing.." She said, unable to find any other way to describe it. She was pretty speechless, which again, said something for Emily. She had a fairly large vocabulary, and the only word she could come up with was amazing. What it was was spectacular, incredible.
"Did you do this for me?" She asked innocently as she looked towards him with a soft smile. She then redirected her gaze towards the pretty lights. She loved the way they looked against the darkening sky; how they looked like all of the pretty stars coming into view. As a grin slowly spread across her face, she turned to Alister and placed a light kiss on his cheek. She felt her heart flutter a little, but ignored it; well, not so much ignored it as she had no idea what it meant. Emily could not be more oblivious when it came to boys. School was no problem, but she had no idea whatsoever when she was getting attention from the opposite sex. "I think this is good enough for me to skip my homework for." She joked, pulling her bag higher onto her shoulder as it began to slip off.
"Are we going out on the water?" She then asked, now even more intrigued about the nights events. This had been highly unexpected, and as much as she enjoyed Alister's company, she didn't think she would find much enjoyment in the night. She let others opinions of him overshadow her own, and she felt awful about that. "I'm sorry I doubted you." She told him honestly. Emily really was the sweetest girl in the world. tagged: alister deville notes: they're so cute! appearance: clickity click click

Alister James Deville Alister smiled at Emily as she said what he'd done was amazing. At least he knew now that she liked his surprise. Then she asked if he'd done all of this for her. Of course he had, and that meant something a lot more than Emily knew. Alister was being romantic for her, which was something he never really was with girls most of the time. It was simple to like Emily though. She was incredibly sweet and smart and beautiful. There was nothing not to like. In a way, Emily could be everything that Alister needed. He knew that he could trust her at least, which was more than he could say for his ex. If it really came to it, he thought he could even trust her with his heart.
Alister was about to answer her question though, when his thoughts were interrupted by her smile and the proceeding kiss on the cheek she gave him. That had caught him off guard. He'd never really had a girl kiss him on the cheek and be so happy about something he'd done for them. It made him much happier than it should have and he was secretly a little proud that he'd impressed Emily enough to earn that from her. His hand automatically went to the place where she'd kissed him, and then he realized he was spacing out a little and removed it before focusing on her again.
Alister laughed a bit when she said this was worth her skipping her homework for. That meant a lot considering he usually couldn't get Emily to leave her homework for him. If this was the kind of thing that was going to get her out of the house, then he would have to start doing them more often for her. When she asked if they were going out onto the water, he replied with, "Of course we are. You didn't think I was just going to bring you out here to show you some lights on my boat, did you? And yeah, I did all of this for you. I thought it'd be something you'd like. You don't have to worry about doubting me though. You wouldn't be the first person, and besides I like proving people wrong. We've got more to do though."
Alister stepped over the railing and got onto the boat, looking back at her with a smile before offering her his hand to help her get on board. He said, "Come on, Em. We've got a whole night ahead of us. I'm not done surprising you yet." As soon as she was on the boat, Alister reluctantly let go of her hand and moved to the steering wheel, turning the key in the ignition of the boat before it roared to life. He smiled to himself. If there was one place he really belonged, it was on the water. Alister pulled the boat out of it's spot in the marina and turned it around, driving slowly further out into the water. It was a bit chilly tonight so he didn't want the wind to make Emily cold, especially since she'd forgotten to bring a jacket.
Alister knew exactly where they were headed. He wanted Emily to see the town the way he always saw it, because it was much more than just a small town in Maine where nothing really happened. There was beauty in it if you knew where to look. With that thought, he glanced over at Emily. There was definitely beautiful things here. The trip took about ten minutes because he was going slower than usual, but finally Alister shut off the engine and moved to the front of the boat to drop the anchor. He walked back to where Emily was standing and pointed back towards the shore, where they could clearly see the lights coming from town. Alister grinned and asked, "So, have you ever seen Arietta like this before, Em? I think the view's a little better from out here, personally."

Emily took Alister's hand, and carefully climbed upon the boat behind him. "If you had only brought me out here to see the lights, that probably would have been fine with me." She told him honestly. She still couldn't believe he had done this for her. She continued admiring just how beautiful his boat looked as he slowly let go of her hand and made his way to the steering wheel. She sat down, rubbing her arms quickly to keep herself warm as she glanced up at the darkening night sky. She mentally cursed herself for not bringing a jacket, however, as it somewhat distracted her from what seemed like an otherwise perfect night. After about ten minutes of silently trolling through the water, Alister stopped the boat and came back to join her. Emily didn't notice the lights from their town until he pointed them out, and she could have sworn her jaw dropped. "Wow... it all looks so spectacular from here. She whispered gently, unable to take her eyes off of the shimmering lights and the way they hit the water in front of them.
Turning to Alister, she gave him a warm smile. "Thank you so much for bringing me here. Emily was glad that Alister enjoyed proving people wrong. She pictured him trying to corrupt her and take her out to a bar rather than spend a quiet evening out at sea. "So, Alister, tell me, how did you find this place?" She asked curiously. This was one of those places where you could boat past it, completely missing its beauty. She noted that that was a shame. She also realized that it was almost like her current situation. If Alister hadn't taken her out here tonight, perhaps she never would have realized the true kindness he had in his heart. "Do you, uh, have a blanket on your boat?" She later asked, once she began to shiver once again. Being distracted by the lights could only help her forget the cold for so long. tagged: alister deville notes: this post was absolute shit, i'm so sorry ): appearance: click here

Alister James Deville Alister couldn't help but stare as he watched Emily look at the lights. The wind was blowing her hair gently and the light from the city was reflecting off of her eyes and she looked absolutely breathtaking. He was glad that she was the type of girl that appreciated things like this. There were plenty of girls in their town that would have blown it off as boring or stupid, but Emily wasn't like that and she probably didn't even consider that it was all kind of cheesy. Alister acted confident and arrogant, and that always worked for getting laid, but when it came to romance, he was at a bit of a loss. Ideas like this were about as much as he could come up with off the top of his head.
He was just thinking about whether or not Emily liked him when she interrupted his thoughts by thanking him for bringing her to this place and showing her everything. He replied automatically with a, "You're welcome. It was my pleasure." Then she asked how he'd found this place. It hadn't been that difficult, actually. Alister had been around boats his whole life and he'd spent a lot of nights after his brother had died alone out on the water. He'd been floating along just thinking when he'd found this spot and dropped anchor. After that it had become one of his favorite spots on the water. He always came out here to think and be alone for awhile, but tonight he wasn't alone. He was with Emily.
Alister didn't say all of that though. What he ended up saying was, "I don't really remember, actually. I've been on the water a lot and I guess I just found this spot one day. It's beautiful though." There wasn't much else to say after all, or at least that he wanted to say, and soon the two of them were just staring at the town in silence. It wasn't an uncomfortable one though. Alister was just enjoying the fact that he was here with Emily and that she seemed to be having a good time. He didn't want to ruin that by telling her that this was the place where he'd gotten over his brother's death and spent more time than he cared to remember being depressed at.
It was too wonderful of a night with her to bring up things like that. Alister was also hoping a little that he could replace those bad memories with good ones. That this place might become special again with Emily there. It was awhile later when he noticed her shivering next to him and then she finally asked him for a blanket. Alister smiled at her and said, "Yeah, of course I do. Sorry I didn't realize you were cold. I am too a little, actually, but there's only one blanket. You can use it though. I don't mind." With that, Alister left her to grab the blanket from inside the cabin before returning with it and wrapping it around her shoulders. It had been his brother's, but he didn't mind sharing it with Emily.
Alister continued, "There you go. I hope it keeps you warm enough. Sorry I don't have a jacket or something better." Then he gave her one of his trademark smiles and leaned against the railing as he watched her. Tonight had definitely been a lot more interesting than he'd expected. It could only get better from there too with Emily with him. He didn't mind being cold if it made her a little more comfortable, after all. Alister just hoped she was having as much fun as he was.

"Is this what you do in your spare time, other than apparently picking up girls." She started her question off innocently, then she grinned when he gave her a look. "I hear things." More like, been warned. People would tell Emily that she was a sweet girl who had no business hanging out with a womanizer such as Alister. She didn't see it that way, though. She knew Alister; maybe not better than anyone but she knew he was kind and that he had never wronged her. "I don't know if I've ever seen anything so beautiful." She told him in agreeance, now looking towards him. Although, she had to admit, he was certainly something to look at himself. He was painfully handsome. It wasn't like she didn't know why the girls fell for him, despite his reputation. They didn't care if he was sweet like she did, but then again, they didn't want to be friends with him like she did. She wasn't about to become a notch on someones bed post, and while she enjoyed his company, she felt friendship was the only way to do just that. He was nicer to her now than he was when he had been apparently hitting on her. If he had been, anyway. She didn't know when to trust the judgment of others.
Emily smiled the only way she knew how, gently. She always had this look of pure, adorable innocence. It was sweet of him to offer her warmth while leaving himself in the cold, but Emily wasn't going to go for that. "Don't be silly," Emily told him, holding out her hand for him. "We can share, I'm not big enough that this blanket won't cover the two of us." Alister finally gave in, and she lifted the blanket up on her right side for him to sit next to her. "This blanket is enough. Thank you, Alister." She told him as she inched closer towards him, making it so that they both fit perfectly under the large blanket. She then tilted her head slightly, resting it on his shoulder as she continued to admire the pretty lights. The two of them sat in comfortable silence for a little while, until Emily turned to him once again. "So is this boat just yours then? It's really quite lovely."

Alister James Deville Alister was slightly surprised when Emily offered to share the blanket with him, her hand reaching out for his. Not because he didn't think she was nice enough to do it, but because they'd never actually been that close to each other before. He knew Emily wasn't the type of girl to have experience with being close to a boy, and he understood that she had so much of her innocence left that she probably wasn't even thinking about their proximity now that he'd taken her hand and moved under the blanket with her. She was probably only thinking that she was helping him and wanted him to be warm.
Alister wasn't complaining though. He was enjoying the feeling of warmth coming from his left side from her body. He'd never just sat with a girl under a blanket like this without something more happening eventually. It wasn't a bad thing though. He liked that Emily wasn't giving in to him for now, and that despite everything he'd done before, she could make him feel like he still had a little of his innocence left too. That he could be a good person if he tried. He was taken slightly off guard when Emily rested her head on his shoulder, but he didn't mind it at all. Alister just wasn't sure if it meant anything to her or not.
Emily was really nice, but it was a little frustrating that he couldn't tell what she was thinking most of the time. Usually when a girl did something like this, it meant that she liked the guy she was with, but Emily wasn't that simple. He couldn't assume things with her, because it could mean nothing at all to her. Still, that didn't mean that he couldn't enjoy the fact that they were this close and that he was oddly comfortable with her leaning up against him like that. Alister wasn't cold anymore either with the blanket around them and their body heat warming the space between them. He didn't want to worry too much about what it all meant, because it would just drive him crazy in the end.
Alister's thoughts were interrupted again when Emily asked about his boat. Memories flooded back to him of the day he'd gotten it as a present. Alister responded, "Yeah, it's all mine. It was a birthday present, actually. My dad owns a bunch of big boats, and I grew up around them, but he knew I preferred something smaller like this. I'd been asking him for one for forever, and he'd kept telling me that he had plenty of boats I could use if I wanted and that I didn't need it, and then on my sixteenth birthday, he gave me this. Well, my brother was the one that tricked me into getting down here so they could give it to me, but it was from my parents."
Alister could tell he had a pained expression on his face at the mention of his brother, but it had only been about a year since he'd died in Iraq. He still wasn't over it, and thinking about his brother being alive and happy always sent a fresh wave of hurt through him. He didn't want Emily knowing about that though. She would only feel pity, and that was something he couldn't stand any more of. Alister continued with the story, "So I was sitting around the house just killing time until that night when my party was, and Jack came in and started bothering me to go out on the boat with him, because it was something we always did together, until I got annoyed enough to say yes just to shut him up, you know?"
Alister swallowed hard, controlling the urge to cry again over the fact that he'd never see his brother again, before continuing, "So, anyway, I got up and we walked to the marina, and when we got down there, my dad and mom were waiting by his boat, and they said they had a surprise for me. I kind of figured at that point that it had something to do with my birthday, but I didn't know what. So they took me to this boat and my dad told me it was mine and they all wished me happy birthday. I was kind of surprised after he'd kept saying no, but I've never loved anything as much as I love this boat. So, yeah, that's how I got it." He hadn't even realized that he'd started crying while he told the rest of the story, but he was, and now Emily had seen. He was just hoping that it wouldn't ruin the rest of their night.

Emily thought nothing of it, but she really enjoyed being out here on the water with Alister, resting her head on his shoulder as they shared the average sized blanket. Then again, Emily never really thought anything when it came to the opposite gender. She was friends with them, smiled politely at them, but that was usually the extent of it. She had school, homework, her family, all the volunteering she did, and sleep. Those things made up her entire day, and she never got wrapped up in dating the way that most her age had. They thought she was strange for that; for not dating, or for being too nice. Emily didn't notice that she was slowly developing a crush on the boy next to her, that the reason she had left a night of homework was because she genuinely wanted to and enjoyed spending time with him. She didn't go out out of pity, like she did when most friends called her because they were upset or in a jam. Emily observed Alister carefully as he began to tell his story. It was just one of the reasons why she made friends so easily, with the people who were okay with her being too nice of a person, of course. She was one of the best listeners around. She even managed to come up with good advice most of the time, even if she hadn't done a lot of living in her nineteen years of life. She noticed his expression change as he mentioned his brother, changing her own to one of worry. She continued to listen intently as he spoke of the time he got the boat, and she wondered if he wished she hadn't brought it up at all. She regretted that it had upsetted him, but she had to say that she didn't regret asking about it. She liked learning about his life; she liked learning about the past of others and seeing why the are the way they are today. After all, every little experience shapes a persons future. Maybe this was the reason for how it seemed Alister didn't really get close to anybody. He had to have the playboy reputation for some reason. Emily nodded to his rhetorical question, almost urging him to continue on.
Emily then watched as the young boy slowly began to break down. Without thinking about it, she pulled him closer to her, making it so that he could continue to cry on her shoulder. She gently whispered to him, "shhh, it's going to be okay," as she ran her fingers though his hair. She then came to realize that her heart had picked up, and it was beating about a mile a minute. From this close she could pick up the scent of his cologne, she felt drawn to him. She enjoyed the feeling of his hair between her fingers. Emily was visibly confused by this, but she didn't think he would notice through his sadness. Plus, she also knew most people couldn't read others the way that she could. Once he had brought himself together, she released him from her grasp and stared straight into his eyes, their faces not far from each other because of the close proximity. They had only gotten slightly red, and she was sure that soon you wouldn't even be able to tell what had just happened. Without thinking about it, Emily reached her hand over to touch his face. She gently wiped the last tear that fell from his gorgeous eyes, and left her hand on his cheek for longer than a moment. She then gave him a light smile, pulling her hand away to kiss his cheek where she had just touched; almost as if she was kissing it all better. She stayed silent for a little bit, carefully choosing what to say. She didn't want to dig deeper tonight unless he chose to. It broke her heart to see him this way; he looked like a lost puppy. I really do love this boat." She finally said, smiling in that bright way that she does that urges everyone around her to do the same. "Do you think you can bring me out here again? I promise I won't bring my homework."
