One day off was what Mykayla had been looking forward to for what seemed like an eternity now. No school or classes to go to, no homework to try to work on. No doctors appointments and talk of new treatment ideas or options to worry about. No one around to keep a smile on for, no act to keep up and no one to disappoint or let down. This day was all about her, a day when she could put her hair up in a messy up-do, put on some comfy clothes and do whatever she wanted to do without having to worry about anything else. She had slept in late, enjoying the silence of her small home for once as she had gotten herself a glass of water before heading into the living room to enjoy some quality time with her television that she didn’t remember having a lot of lately. It was going to be perfect; Kay just knew it. She snuggled down into the cushions of her couch and pulled a blanket up around her before reaching for the remote and powering the TV on, then started channel surfing and looking for something to start her day off with. Something mindless, something she could just lose herself in and that wouldn’t spur up any unwanted thoughts or emotions or memories. That’s what she was looking for, and she could count on episodes of Clean House, How Do I Look?, and even Say Yes To The Dress for those things. She had found one of her shows and had just started to get into it when her cell phone rang, the ringtone telling her it was her little sister, Amy, without having to look at the caller I.D. on the screen.
This day was supposed to be her day, and Mykayla had had serious thoughts about turning her phone off completely, or screening calls, but this was Amy and she could make some time to talk to her sister. Kay muted the TV and answered the call, expecting to hear Amy ranting and raving about Aiden some more, or hyper and bouncing off the walls because she had just drank three cups of coffee. However, Amy’s conversation was not what Kay had been expecting; instead of being about Amy and her friends, it was about Greyson McCarthy, one of those things that Kay had desperately wanted to not think about today. Amy and Grey were close, and Amy had learned earlier that day that Grey was on his way to the airport, leaving for New York just like he had told Mykayla that he would do. He just hadn’t said when, and Mykayla had at least thought that he would… well, she had hoped he would say goodbye. It brought tears to Mykayla’s eyes as she sat up, making an excuse to end her conversation with Amy rather abruptly before she broke down completely and brought alarm to her sister. This really couldn’t be happening. Kay knew that once he left, she wouldn’t hear from him again. He would be gone, and he would make her a distant memory in his mind. This man, her best friend and the man that she was so hopelessly in love with, would be out of her reach for good, and there wasn’t anything that she could do about it. But, that’s when a switch flipped in Kay’s head, and she was throwing back her blanket and searching for her keys and a pair of shoes.
She had never been to the airport before because Mykayla hadn’t traveled anywhere that required a plane, but she knew how to get there. Parking was a hassle and was more stressful than it should have been, but she eventually got it and was making her way into the airport, searching flight times and hoping that Greyson’s plane hadn’t left yet. She ended up asking for help, which proved more beneficial as the young woman not only told her that the fight hadn’t boarded yet, but which terminal she could find passengers awaiting to board said flight could be found. Kay’s blue eyes searched, looking all around her hoping to catch a glimpse of him, and when she did her heart skipped a beat. There were so many things reeling through her mind as she slowly approached him, his back turned to her. What could she possibly say? Would it matter to him, or had she wasted a trip and wasted her time? Kay didn’t know, but she had known that she couldn’t let him leave without trying. “Greyson,” she said when she was standing only feet from him, her voice small, almost timid as her blue eyes watched him turn around and grasp the situation. She bit down on her lower lip nervously, her hands sliding into the back pockets of the jeans she had managed to throw on so she wouldn’t look like a total bum. “You… You‘re actually leaving? ” She knew what he had said, but to imagine him really gone from her life? That wasn't something she had ever been able to do.

------- shoving the last pair of jeans into his suitcase, grey shut the lid with a sigh. he wasn't packing everything this time - only what he would need for his short trip to tour the home he was thinking of buying in new york. besides, he still had to figure out what was going to happen with fire and ice before he could officially leave. this trip, however, felt final. it was as if he was already telling everything goodbye in his head. he could already feel that when he did come back, it wouldn't be the same. arietta - the place he once called home - would no longer be that. it would become a strange town. just some town he would visit to get the rest of his belongings before leaving once and for all. now, with his suitcase packed and his plane ticket in hand, he locked up his once prized lake house and climbed into his truck. the drive through town wasn't easy for him. living in a small town meant that everyone knew who you were. people saw his truck and would wave at him or yell his name. he would forcible wave back, but in his mind he kept thinking about how shocked they would be to find out that he was gone for good soon. grey was glad when the truck finally pulled into the airport. of course, parking was a pain, but once he found a spot, he was free to get the hell out of arietta.
------- grey let his blue eyes scan the terminal where he would board his airplane. there wasn't a single face he knew, which he found comforting for the first time in days. he didn't have to face someone who would ask where he was going, when he'd be back, or worst - what he'd be doing while he was away. he didn't particularly want to be the talk of the town with his news, so he hadn't told many people about his plans. the only people who knew were felix, roxy, izzy, and mykayla. at the thought of her name, grey sighed deeply and closed his eyes, sinking into a nearby seat. though she wasn't one-hundred percentthe reason that he was leaving, she held a majority in the reasoning. he loved her! he could admit that now. the problem was he didn't think she did - even if there were moments when she made him think that way. she was young and had a life ahead of her made for greatness. the last thing she needed was a guy who couldn't even remain friends with one person for too long before he slept with the girl - case in point: izzy. grey wanted to be with kay more than anything, but he wasn't sure if that would ever be able to happen!
------- an announcement broke into his thoughts about the flight to new york boarding now. grey stood up, grabbing his carry-on bag in his hand as he slowly filed behind the group of people who had already began to line up for the flight. just as he was a few people away from handing over his ticket, he heard a familiar voice yell his name. his brow furrowed, though his eyes grew wide in shock. was it really her? turning slowly, he saw her standing there. his heart did a leap of joy, praying she had come to stop him. his brain, however, was thinking differently and hoping she had simply come to say goodbye. her words caused the twenty-five year old to lower his gaze to the floor as he stepped out of the line and walked over to her. "yeah, i am." it was all he could say once his eyes found their way back to her own. it was taking every cell in his body not to reach out and touch her cheek, or to lay every feeling he was having out on the line.

She didn't know what she was doing here. Today was supposed to be a day that was for her and her alone, a daywhen she didn't have to do anything or worry about anyone. That's what she should have stuck to when Amy had called with the news about Greyson leaving. After all, he had made it pretty clear that he didn't want her around anymore after that incident at the restaurant. Mykayla still didn't understand Grey or how he could treat her the way that he had. She was supposed to be his friend, his best friend. He was supposed to understand her and he was supposed to see more in her than just a piece of ass. She had thought so much more of him, had thought that he could maybe love her like she loved him. Kay had given up on that silly idea that day he had called and told her it would be best if they didn't speak anymore. Or, had she? If she had, why hadn't she been able to just let him leave? What was she doing here, and why did she feel this need to at least try? The very notion of it all seemed ridiculous, but Kay was stubborn enough to drive all the way to the airport to see this one through.
She knew that she had been lucky to catch him as the passengers were getting ready to board the plane. She was cutting it close for sure, but all that mattered was that she had caught him before he walked through that boarding gate and out of her life forever. She had a moment of fear, thinking that he might look back at her and then keep on going, once and for all letting her know that they were done and that she wasn't anyone to him anymore. Thankfully, Greyson tunred and stepped out of line, approaching her and giving her a reason to have a little bit of hope. Her eyes met his and her breath caught in her chest. Dear god, he was the most gorgeous man that her blue eyes had laid sight on, and she loved him more than she would ever be able to express. She wanted so badly to take him up in her embrace and never let him go, but she couldn't do that now. "Amy called and told me you were leaving today," she told him quietly, her eyes looking down and away from him. "I couldn't let you leave without saying goodbye..." She didn't want to ever say that to him but it didn't seem as though she had a choice. Kay took a deep breath and brought her blue eyes back to his. Her heart was pounding, but she had something else that she needed to tell Greyson.
"There's something else, too. I have to say it, and you need to hear it...just once. Then I'll leave and let you go for good." This was going to break her heart and Kay very much doubted that she was going to get through it without crying, but she didn't care anymore. "I'm in love with you, Greyson, and I think that there's been a part of me that always has been. That's what I was trying to tell you that night at the restaurant, and I'm sorry if that was more than what you were looking for that night but that's how I feel." her eyes were teary, and her heart was just breaking. Mykayla looked back down at her feet, afriad of his reaction, afraid of how he might look at her, and not wanting to see him leave.

------- what was she doing here? grey let his eyes search her's for the answer, but he could find nothing. he would have to wait for her to tell him, which was killing him. he used to be able to read her every emotion. not anymore! that had all changed after their kiss the night in his restaurant. as she began to speak, grey adjusted the strap to his bag on his shoulder. of course it was amy who had told him his flight schedule. he almost smirked at the thought of this, seeing as the younger girl had pestered him so long about where he was going that he only gave in simply to shut her up. when mykayla said that she couldn't let him leave without saying goodbye, grey let his eyes fall to the floor. now he knew that she didn't come here to stop him. she had come to say goodbye. before, he had hoped this was the truth. now that it was, grey wanted to run for dear life and never turn back! he knew now more than ever that he loved kay, and her not wanting him to stay was killing him. but that all changed when she said she had to tell him something else.
------- his eyes went back to mykayla's as his brow furrowed in wonder. his heart swelled as she began to speak again, saying that she loved him and that was why she had stopped him the night in fire and ice. every word she had just said was exactly what he wanted to hear, and maybe always had. grey didn't realize that he had been holding his breath until he let out a deep sigh of relief. as her eyes shot down to the ground, grey dropped his carry-on bag onto the ground and used both hands to cup her cheeks, making her look up at him. in one swift motion, he pulled her to him and kissed her with every emotion he could put in it. it was much like the one they had shared only weeks before, but this time it was much better. he knew she loved him, and he loved her. it was perfect! pulling back only enough to look into her eyes, grey smiled brightly. "i've always loved you, and i always will."

]Mykayla was really such an honest girl, and had absolutely no trouble at all being honest with anyone. She was a horrible liar, always having the tendency to give it away even when she was really trying to cover up something. She didn’t like the idea of hiding things, though, and had always been so upfront about everything. It might sound juvenile, childish, but she believed that honesty really was the best policy in most cases, and it had never led her wrong before. Well, that was until she had tried to be upfront and honest with Greyson the first time around that night she had gone to help him at Fire and Ice. She had thought that she had made it so clear that she wanted him, and only him. She had felt her heart soaring, having one moment where she thought that she had finally gotten the man that she had always wanted and that things were going to be okay. Then, all had been shattered, her heart breaking as he had told her to leave and ultimately pushed her away. Kay knew that she hadn’t really said the words, but her intent should have been read easily enough. She had wanted him, and he had rejected her. Why she was going back for round two, why she thought that being completely honest with him would have a different result, she didn’t know. There was just a voice inside of her telling her that she had to do it, had to lay it all out on the line and make sure that he didn’t leave without knowing the truth.
However, now that she had said it, she desperately wanted to run in the other direction. Getting turned down once had been miserable. Going through it twice would be down right crushing, and she didn’t know how her heart was ever going to be able to stand it. She looked down at the ground, trying to remind herself to breathe, waiting on him to do something, to react however he would and for them to move forward from there. Kay knew what she wanted to happen, when she hoped would happen, but she didn’t believe that he would ever want her that way until she felt his hands gently cupping her face, lifting it up and making her look at him. Surprise flooded through her when Grey pulled her to him and captured her lips with his in a kiss that would put all other kisses to shame. This was everything that they felt, everything that they desperately wanted to share fueling this one moment and it was breathtaking. Nicholas Sparks could not have written this moment better himself. Mykayla didn’t want him to ever pull away from her, afraid that he would still leave, afraid that this had been the one last goodbye, but when Greyson did end their kiss and pull away from her, a bright smile lingered on his lips, and his words made a smile appear on her lips as well. He loved her, and so much love and warmth filled her in that moment and all she could do was smile back. But, that smile faded slightly. “Then why were you so upset that night at the restaurant?” That was the one question left that she needed to have answered, because she was still under the impression that love wasn’t what he had been looking for that night, and she didn’t understand what any of the last few weeks and their silence had been about if he loved her like he said he did.

------- with his hands still cupping her face, gray used one of his thumbs to gently caress her cheek as his blue eyes stared back into her own. his words brought a smile to her face, and grey couldn't help but smile brightly, too. he was about to move in for another kiss when her smile faded and her words cut through his happiness. once again, that night in his restaurant was brought back to haunt him. he knew it was behind them now, but it still hurt to think about it. it was the night he had virtually lost mykayla as she was to him. she went from best friend to the girl he realized he loved with just one kiss. it mostly changed when she ended the progression of the passion, and then him telling her to leave as his heart broke into a million pieces. sighing to himself, grey lowered his head as one of his hands drop to his side. glancing back up, he finally spoke, telling the truth for the first time since it had happened. "i know what i said and did was wrong, kay, but honestly i wasn't in my right mind that night. you were driving me crazy... in the good way! when you told me to stop-"
------- grey cut himself off for a second as he collected his thoughts. "i couldn't help but think you did it, because you didn't feel the same way. and that killed me! so i told you to leave before i literally broke down." he gave a weak smile before using his free arm to pull her into him, making whatever space they had between them now nonexistent. "now that i know how you feel, i have to tell you..." he paused long enough to smile widely. "i'm never letting you go." he ended his words with a kiss just as an announcement came over the speakers for the final boarding call of his flight. he lifted his head and stared at the speaker above him as if it were speaking to him directly. his gaze went back to kay's long enough before a smile appeared again. "take me home!" he said playfully, but in all honesty, he was serious. there was no way he was leaving now.

She wished that she could have just let that one thing go. Mykayla could feel the happiness bubbling up inside of her, everything that she wanted right there in front of her as Greyson had just told her that he loved her. For some reason unknown to her, she had managed to snag his heart and win his love, and he was looking at her just like she had always wanted him to look at her. But…it just made everything else seem illogical, unprecedented, and Kay felt compelled to know the truth of what had come between them that night, and why things hadn’t played out differently. She hated to see that smile fade from his lips as a reaction to her own change in expression, but something had to be resolved, and she needed to know before they could successfully move forward from all this foolishness. Her blue eyes never left his face as Greyson sighed, letting one of his warm hands fall away from her face. Kay listened to his words, hanging from every one of them as she finally heard the reason for all their coldness and distance. Her eyes grew a little wider when she heard, when she finally understood why he had been so upset. It hadn’t been because she had turned down having sex with him, but because he had thought that she was rejecting him completely. One moment, one miscommunication had brought the whole thing crashing down on them and had denied them the happiness that they could have been sharing in since that night at the restaurant.
That knowledge just broke her heart, but Grey was able to quickly repair it with that smile that reappeared on his face as his free arm snaked around her middle and pulled her into his body, a smile quick to appear on her lips as well. Just being close to him was enough, but his words had Mykayla’s heart soaring once again. She never wanted him to let her go, never wanted to know what it was like to have to go without him again. Greyson’s words were followed by another amazing kiss, Mykayla letting her arms go up and around his neck. However, this kiss was interrupted by the announcement of the last boarding call for his flight, Grey turning to look at the speaker, though Kay’s eyes were on him. She knew what he had just said, and God, she hoped that he had meant it and wasn’t about to leave her. Thankfully, he answered that announcement with “Take me home!” which had Mykayla grinning. “Gladly,” was her own playful little reply before standing up on her tiptoes to kiss him again. Only, this time when she pulled back, she also removed her arms from his neck and gave herself enough distance to slap him across the cheek. Surprising? Yes, definitely, coming from the mild little thing that Kay was, but she hadn’t hit him hard enough to do damage. She just needed to get the point across. “But don’t you dare act like that ever again, Greyson McCarthy. I don’t think I could stand to go so long without speaking to you or seeing you…” Telling her that they shouldn’t speak, ignoring phone calls and not replying to texts or instant messages… it had all been entirely uncalled for. “So don’t screw it up,” she added, teasing and offering a soft smile before taking his hand in her own. Mykayla would walk him to his truck, and hopefully from there they would figure out where they were going because she didn’t want to be away from him right now. Wherever he wanted to go, she’d follow.
