The smells of Arietta, well it mostly just smelled that of pollution and dirt, but it was still refreshing. Jesse Hilton, your local wannabe famous athlete, runner actually, and once fellow Arietta attender. He lived here most of his life, went to school in a boarding school, and just left last year. He was away for the whole year, just decided to return with the impending Valentine's day coming up. His reason for coming back, there wasn't much of one, other than the fact that he was taking some time off his training. In high school, he'd been a bit of a nerd, actually he became a male cheerleader as well, it sounded rather girly, but he was the one with his hand up a girl's skirt nearly every day. Other than that, he was a track champion, won awards for being so fast, even went to nationals for it. He also got himself into boxing, was at the top of his class and wondered if all those years of cheerleading had paid off, lifting girls seemed to have it's perks indeed. A smile drew across his face just thinking about the old days, and here he was again, missing this place, even if it wasn't really the best place to live.
It wasn't anything of a bad neighborhood, just boring and he really just couldn't stand it. He was happy to get out of here, though he hated leaving behind some of his friends, he stayed in contact with the one that mattered the most. He texted Evan from time to time, but now he actually called her and told her that he was in town. Though, he was going to go looking for a hotel, he stopped by Evan's old house, not finding her there, he figured he should call her, even if he wanted to surprise her. It hadn't changed much around here, still dull it seemed, and with the snow on the ground, he shivered. He held the phone to his ear, laughing at how tired she sounded and not noticing that it was indeed, three am. Meaning, not only was it the morning, but it was also Valentine's day, so he walked as he talked, back to his car. He stopped at a twenty-four hour place, keeping Evan on the phone but not really telling her what he was doing. After finishing up buying flowers, he already bought her a gift, which was located in the backpack on his back, this seemed to be better. He made it to her house in no time, flowers in hand, backpack on back, and the phone in his other hand.
He stared at the door before him, forgetting about the phone to his ear and just wondering if he was ready for this. Seeing her again meant all those memories would come flooding back to him, and it also meant that he once again wouldn't have her. Her second choice, that's what he had always been to Evan, always the one to pick her up after she had fallen. He known her pretty much his whole life, they had been through a lot together, but there was always someone who would treat her better than him. Yeah, it got him down a lot of the time, but he was respecting her wishes always, and letting her be happy. He faked a smile when she talked about all those other men, the ones she got herself involved with, had relationships with, always faked it for her case. He wondered if she ever caught onto it, probably not since he'd been doing it for quite a while and she had yet to call him out on it. They were pretty open about their relationship, whatever it was that they had was out in the open. It was pretty much what you could see on the exterior, though they had sex here and there, he figured it never meant anything to her at all. Just casually waking up together, sometimes he'd be gone before she woke up, yeah he was one of those guys. He didn't want her seeing the pain in his eyes, so he'd leave her a note, sometimes with breakfast, or coffee, or even a rose. Tradition, that's what he started calling it, she had yet to catch him as well.
Seeing as it was about three in the morning, it was dead quiet out here, actually it was rather creepy so he moved along and opened the newly unlocked door. He wasted no time, dropping his backpack and his phone onto the floor and tackling the blonde female to the ground. He wrapped his arms around the small girl, hugging her to his chest and grinning widely. Oh, he had missed this, he had missed all of this. Noticing that he was probably too heavy for her to breath, he got up off her and stood, putting his hand down to her to help her up. "Sup Ev?" He grinned his normal lazy smile at her, as if telling her not to resist him. There was no ring on her finger, which meant she was still on the market, that was the plus of the day so far, and maybe he could convince her that he'd come back to win her again. Though he sorta figured that a flash of the abs wouldn't get her, nor would his boyish charm, but being a gentlemen wasn't so hard, so maybe he'd give that a whirl. He stood there before her, knowing that not really all that much has changed in the time he had been gone, she hadn't changed at all, other than her hair being a little big longer and she looked like she filled out more, in a good way of course. "Long time no see, huh?" He spoke once more, having enjoyment out of just looking at her. He shut the door with his foot, turning around to lock it and make sure his stuff was inside as well. He sorta just dropped it at the door, and he was going to leave it there for now. Jesse had better things on his mind right about now.

There was one thing that the petite blonde had not been expecting on Valentine’s Day, and that was to be woken up at three o’clock in the morning by none other than Jesse Hilton. The man had grown up with her both being in Arietta natives, but Jesse had long since left their hometown. It was nothing she had not expected whenever she had graduated from the Academy those many years ago. They had their own little spark and history after everything that had happened between herself and Kaler Scott. The blonde had been a mess after everything that had happened back in high school, hell she had even dyed her beautiful blonde locks red her senior year. It was a poor decision because as soon as it had been done she was even more upset. She supposed that the last thing she had needed after having a miscarriage and losing her long term boyfriend was a drastic change, but it had thrown her into the life that she now loved. Now Evan had left that life behind, at least for the most part, and focused on becoming the woman that she was now. Right now she was a successful fashion designer and business manager. She balanced her social life and her work life phenomenally, and still had time for the important people in her life. Flinging her red headed self into nothing but designing during her senior year of high school had been the best thing to happen to her. Sure the red hair had to go, and as soon as it had grown out she had immediately dyed her hair back to the blonde that it had always been.
Being woken up at three o’clock in the morning was not her ideal way to wake up, but that was something that had just happened. Jesse Hilton apparently was trying to figure out where she was living, and she wondered why he would be calling her. That was when he sprung that he was in town, and she was kind of shocked. Why wait until three in the morning to tell her that he was on his way into town? Why not give her some kind of heads up, but it was whatever at this point. The blonde was trying to pull herself together and wake herself up enough to fully comprehend what he was telling her. That was whenever he told her that he was standing in front of her door, so naturally she pulled herself up out of the bed. Obviously the door would be locked, because she was a single girl. Yes there were not many trouble makers in Arietta, but she was still a girl that had a good life going. So no she did not want to have her stuff stolen from her and end up being sold or trashed. So her doors were locked and bolted, but trying to go down the stairs of her home were not easy whenever one was half asleep. Instead of being graceful, she was still on her phone and was trying to pull herself out of her funk and let him in. Knowing Jesse he would need a place to crash while he was in town, which normally meant on her couch.
Evan was wearing one of Kaler’s old ratty football shirts, simply because it was the most comfortable thing she owned to sleep in. So as she started down the stairs she was doing okay, that was until she hit the last four or five steps. The blonde girl managed to trip down the rest of her stairs and she was almost in tears. It was bad enough that she was half asleep, but now she was injured on top of it all. Those damn steps. She was not so graceful whenever she was half asleep, but she bit her tongue and did not cuss like she wanted to as she made her way from the floor to the front door. She was sore from her tumble, but Jesse was out in the cold. She needed to get the door unlocked and let him in. Their relationship whatever it was was complicated most of the time. Every time that she fell he was always there to pick her back up from the floor. Evan had put herself through the ringer over the years in the men that she had involved herself with, but up until recently only two managed to stay in her life for more than a few weeks. Those two were Kaler, who was her guardian after everything that they had been through and Jesse who always picked her up after she fell. Now she had Noah working his way into her life and even though she had no idea what was going on with them she was thankful that they were whatever they were. Noah had worked his way into her life enough for her to know that she wanted him there.
Valentine’s Day was Evan’s day though, she hardly ever spent it with someone. She would rather spend it on her couch or in her bed wrapped up under the blankets, curled with coffee and with her best book. Instead she may have Jesse to keep her company to some extent, but there he was letting himself into her home though her now unlocked door. Before she even knew what was coming she was back on the ground being tackled. Jesse obviously did not pay attention to the small fact that she had just fallen down the stairs, but there he was on top of her crushing her. Sure enough he realized that he was crushing the poor little thing, and was offering her a hand that was to help her up off her back. “Umm, it is three in the morning, I just fell down the steps and then was tackled to the ground. My day is already looking up from what I should be doing and that is sleeping.” So she was a little grouchy since she was working on maybe four hours of sleep at the moment. She watched him as he locked her door and noticed the things by the door but didn’t say a word about it. Evan focused on what he was saying, and it was true that it had been a long time. “Yeah, you could say that. Are we doing pleasantries now or are you going to let me go back to sleep like you promised? Because I am exhausted, even though I am taking tomorrow....uh, today...off. I always take Valentine’s Day off.” She pulled her hands to her hips and was happy that he was there. “But you know you could have come around more. It wasn’t like you had to go away for as long as you did.”

There was a lot that Jesse could say about Evan, she was pretty much the girl of his dreams. He expressed that a few times, always to remind her that she always had someone backing her up if she ever needed it. He had met her when she was going through a tough time, a whole mishap with a child and he had no idea how to handle something like that. He did what he always did best, listened to her, supported her, even made sure that he was on her beck and call. Jesse had a soft spot for Evan, he always did and always will, she was unlike any girl that he ever would meet. They created a relationship, but maybe the dating life just wasn't for them, even if Jesse wanted so bad just to be with her. He understood that she probably moved on now, and he was just the best friend who would again pick up the pieces if that's what she needed. He felt like she didn't need him anymore, that he was sorta just going to be there and become apart of a love triangle. Maybe it was a mistake coming back, but when he heard her voice on the phone, he knew this couldn't be a mistake at all. Evan was the only girl that could make his heart speed up each and every time she said a word, as odd as that sounded. Though they weren't destined for true love, he liked the little benefits thing they had going.
That, the benefits thing, happened when they broke up, deciding to keep on good terms and noticing the sex was good so why give that up. Jesse had already seen Evan through a lot, so really there wasn't much else that she could throw at him. Something did scare him though, it was the fact that anyone could grab at Evan now, and she may just leave him in the dust. When everything happened with Kaler, she didn't even look twice at Jesse, and that... made him feel alone. Of course, it caused him to make new friends, befriending someone like Evie Garland was probably a mistake, but he saw pass that mean exterior of hers. It seemed like he saw the good in a lot of people, and he didn't really think bad of Kaler either. Jesse understood what had happened, and none of it was either of their faults, so Jesse was to hold no grudge as well. But, he did not want to see himself become alone again, he wanted to keep his grasp on Evan as long as possible. Being gone a year, it seemed like he was going to have to start searching for a new soulmate, and maybe a new friend to occupy his time. He refused to get in between Evan and whoever she was with, he wanted the blonde to be happy, wanted her to live her life the way she wanted, one reason he left. He felt like he was holding her back, so he fled and allowed her to become someone that she seemed to love now. New house, new business, old hair colour, everything was in working order, from his view anyway. Valentine's day, he wanted to spend it with her, but knew he'd probably just be sitting here alone, like every year. He couldn't pull his tradition as of right now, since he had no where else to go, he'd have to stay put. It was weird for him to do this, waking up next to Evan, he knew he was going to get himself too attached. The morning after syndrome, that's what it was and he did not want to fall victim to it. With nowhere else to go, he was going to just have to deal with it, once and for all.
Once more, Jesse had completely forgotten about the time, and the fact that Evan had fallen down the stairs. Oops, well maybe he had a bit too much energy in him for the early morning anyway. He was just way too excited to see his long time best friend, and of course once lover. "Aw, my poor baby." He pouted at her, after she proclaimed how early it was and the fact that she hadn't gotten much sleep. A smile crossed his lips, seeing her tired state and knowing that he should probably let her go back to bed as of right now. "I keep my promises, love. You should know that." He nodded, before moving forward and lifting her up bridal style suddenly. This was just a bit of a thank you, for allowing him to stay and also a sorry for waking her this early. He started up the stairs, leaving his belongings by the door and just forgetting about them for now, he'd be back later on to get them. Once she fell asleep, he'd go down stairs to get her roses, he focused on her right now though. "Now, to find the bedroom, this feels like our first date!" He joked, before nudging one of the doors open with his foot. It took him a few tries but he found his way to the correct room and lightly deposited her onto the bed, taking his jacket off and tossing it on a near by chair. "Nice room, though I expected it to be pink." He grinned, before removing his shoes and jeans. He always slept in his boxers, though he had no idea if that would make Evan awkward. "Your call, shirt or no shirt? Cause, I don't want to be yelled at." He asked, looking at her though it was hard to see in the dark, the moonlight shining in through the window was the only source. He stopped himself from stripping any further, though he was bouncing on his toes a bit cold.

Evan Matthews had been that girl that most guys had liked growing up, but it did not hurt that she had grown up in Arietta. Well that was until she was sent away to boarding school, and it was something she had been very fortunate about. Ever since she had arrived, well the little freshman had capture the eyes of quite a few of the key players at the school. One having completely captured her and made her his sweetheart. Kaler Scott had made high school easy, until she was sixteen and finding out that she was pregnant. She had been scared and terrified about everything that would have happened to her; seeing that her life was completely turning on its head with a boy that could possibly run. Though Kaler never ran whenever she was pregnant, the miscarriage had changed a lot about everything. Kaler had gone back to Texas, and she still had one year left at school. It had changed her a lot, and she had dealt with it. Jesse had always been there to help her, he picked the blonde up whenever she fell. He was the only one that had stuck around whenever her world had completely crumbled; he stayed and put someone in her corner whenever all of her hope was lost. No matter what she was able to count on him and hope that everything was going to be okay. Jesse was one person that Evan could not imagine her life without, but much like Kaler he had disappeared on her. For whatever logic was behind that she had no idea, but she was a big girl and had learned to pick up the pieces for herself after he had left her.
It was not the same circumstances though, seeing as how Jesse and Evan had never been in love like what she had with Kaler. Yes she was heartbroken whenever he had left her for whatever reasons he had last year. Jesse was the one person she had expected to be around, and whenever he wasn’t it hurt her on a whole new level. Something that the blonde woman had not expected to depend on someone else, at least not like that. They had always had a bit of a friends with benefits thing going on even during high school. It had not been a hard thing for her to accomplish seeing as how she had done that with Kaler for how long, but things with Jesse there was nothing to keep her tied down. They were tangled in their own way, but dating and having a relationship had never been on her agenda. Somehow though, Jesse still managed to work his way into her life in a way that she could not imagine things going smoothly whenever he was away. She often times threw herself into her work as is how she had always dealt with people leaving her. High school had created the ideas for her fashion line, and college had given her the ammunition to get it started. Soon she was running a boutique and was currently working on a new line for kids. Evan Matthews’ life did not get put on hold because people wanted to leave her, which was part of the reason that her and Noah had yet to put a label to whatever they were doing anyways. But Valentine’s Day had never been discussed, so she figured that she was going to be sleeping in and watching her movies and reading like she did every other year. Instead, she figured she would be cuddled up on her couch now with Jesse. So maybe this day wouldn’t be so bad after all. She had not strings to think about, but this was who she was. She wore a brilliant sleepy smile whenever he had tackled her, even though she was slightly aggitated with being tackled.
There was no denying that she had missed him, that she had worried about him and that she wanted him to come back. Now that he was back and currently on top of her, she was completely excited to spend some time with him. Jesse was one of her best friends, if not her best guy friend. Other than Kaler he was the only person to actually live through her dark and twisty days after her miscarriage. But here he was in her foyer, making fun of the fact that she had barely slept and was so tired. “I am so sleepy, but you shouldn’t make fun of me mister. I hardly sleep whenever I know I have the day off.” She was now standing on her feet; Evan’s t-shirt falling off her shoulder and doing nothing to fix it. She hoped that Jesse wasn’t paying attention to the fact that it was one of Kaler’s old shirts, but she would say that the reason she wore it was because it was comfy which was the truth. She had no reason to keep it around knowing Kaler had moved on with his life and knowing what she did. Well she had no reason to think that he would want her in his life for anything other than being a good friend. As her tired brain started to shut back down, she swayed slightly and then she felt Jesse’s arms around her and her feet off the ground. She was hardly paying attention as he carried her up the stairs, but she snuggled into his chest ready to fall asleep at any time. It took a few times for him to get it right, and along the line she had a laugh. “It was more like our second date, but whatever you say. Although it was a dorm room and not very good about it.” As she spoke, he managed to find her tranquil bedroom. Yes there was a wisecrack about it being pink, but that had been a long time ago. Right now her room was a pale green, something to keep her busy mind at ease, but it was something that she loved. He set her down on her bed and Evan pulled the blankets up over her feet. She was sitting up watching Jesse take off his shoes and his jeans, and then she found herself wanting him close to her. To feel his skin against hers, but this wasn’t supposed to happen. She could see herself waking up to Jesse and being happy, but then her mind snapped to Noah. Evan could not help but think about how he would feel, but how did she know that he was not doing the same thing? Jesse’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts, and she smiled. “Whichever. I wouldn’t yell at you Jess. So whatever you normally sleep in. It’s fine with me. Just hurry up and get in here. I’m sleepy and wanna cuddle.” She pulled the opposite corner of her bedspread down so that Jesse could get in without taking away her covers. The blonde buried her head in her pillow waiting for her pillow to come to bed.
