we're anything but ordinary one and the same ,
Things were going good for Peyton Roth. She had moved into Kaler’s house about a month ago and from there things had really changed. It was really nice having someone who cared about where she went and what she did. Kaler was always asking her where she was off to and what her plans for the day were. She stayed at home a good bit, raiding Kaler’s library of books and enjoying the silence his place offered. After living in the group home, Peyton didn’t think she’d ever take silence for granted ever again. There had never been a quiet moment around that place, not even at night. It had been crazy and hectic and entirely too much for a girl like Peyton who was used to being alone. But Peyton was definitely enjoying her new life with Kaler. She didn’t think she’d ever been so relaxed and at ease in her life. For the first time she actually felt safe and secure in her own home. She knew that Kaler wasn’t going to hurt her, and after spending so much time with him, Peyton felt a whole new layer of trust with him. She couldn’t say that she felt complete, unwavering trust, but they were definitely getting there. Peyton had even been helping him to get over his fear of killing her. It was a rational fear, she knew, especially with her list of allergies. Still, she had managed to survive this long, and she had no doubt that he would manage to get the hang of it. Until then she would go grocery shopping with him and continue to check all the food labels when he went alone. Peyton was careful when it came to those things, she had to be, but she had no doubt that things would work out.
Which was a new thing for Peyton. She was the worrier. She had always worried over things and been more of a “glass half empty” kind of person. Because all Peyton had ever seen was the evil in the world. It was all she had ever known. But lately she had gotten to see the good that could be found in the world. One great example of this would be one Mykayla Trent. Mykayla was one of the nicest people Peyton thought she had ever known. The first was very sweet and every time she saw her she wore a smile on her face. Mykayla had come over the day that Peyton had moved in, saying that she wanted to help. There wasn’t much, though. Peyton had very few processions, and it had only taken her and Kaler one trip from the car to get everything inside. When putting her things away, Peyton’s clothes had filled only a small portion of the closet and dresser. Kaler had definitely overestimated the space she would need. It was in that moment that Mykayla had offered to take her shopping. Peyton had been unable to refuse, and so she had spent the day with the oldest Trent girl. It had been pretty fun, too, she had to admit, though she was not really one for shopping. It wasn’t something she had ever really done before, and though she had comeback with some clothing type purchases, it still hadn’t been that much. Mykayla had encouraged more shopping than Peyton had done, but once again, Peyton wasn’t much of a shopper, and she wasn’t one to let her money go easily. That tended to happen when you didn’t have much, though. And Peyton had never had much. Her father had barely paid the bills he had, choosing instead to spend his money on booze. Anything she and her sister might have wanted, they had had to get my their own means. And so Peyton cherished everything she had, as little as it may be. She didn’t think that could ever be a bad thing.
That day, things were somewhat crazy around the house. Peyton was pretty sure that every Trent and some others were hanging around the rather tight space. She wasn’t quite sure as to why they were there, though. It was fine, though. Peyton had spent a good bit of time in her room before deciding to come out and join the crowd. The house was empty, though, meaning that either everyone had left, or they were somewhere that she couldn’t see. Either was possible. As she made her way to the kitchen, Peyton decided to go ahead and sit out in the living room, getting a little fresh air from the rest of the house instead of being closed up in her room like she had been most of the day. She grabbed her snack from the kitchen, then after grabbing her book and iPod from her room, made herself at home on the empty couch. She placed the ear buds into her ears, putting on one of the artists that she had found she actually really kind of liked and then opening her book and picking up where she had left off. Beside her sat the bowl of grapes that she had just retrieved beside her where she could reach them with no problem. Peyton was getting absorbed in her book once again, which was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She had discovered the books among Kaler’s shelves, always having heard about them, but never actually having read them. So she had started on the first one a couple days ago, and now she was half way through the fourth one, now understanding why they were so addictive. She was completely hooked, and she found that she had a hard time putting them down. She was in the middle of the first task now, where Harry was racing away from the dragon on his broomstick. She was so absorbed in this tale that she didn’t notice anyone enter the living room with her. She didn’t notice until he tapped her on the shoulder, obviously having tried to speak to her and not getting a response. As was usual, Peyton jumped, and barely managed to keep from spilling her grapes. She took a deep breath to settle herself when she realized that it was just Hunter Trent, and she quickly removed the headphones from her ears. “Sorry. I just… it’s a really good book.” She offered him a small smile, marking her place and shutting the book. “We really have to stop meeting like this. I think that’s the second or third time you’ve scared the life out of me.” It was a joke, though very much true. It seemed that every time she ran into Hunter he managed to surprise her somehow. She didn’t know how many more meetings like that she could take.

“I’m not sure about this…” “Well I am and that’s all that matters, now sit,” was Mykayla’s reply to Hunter’s protests, her speaking in her light and airy tone with a smile on her face, the way that she always spoke that made it hard to argue with her. Hunter sighed, knowing that she wasn’t going to let him out of his house unless he did as she said, so he took a seat in the kitchen chair that she had pulled out for him. “I don’t know why you think I need a haircut right this minute. We’re going to be late getting to Kaler’s.” “It’s a football game, Hunter. It will be one for four hours. Missing the first ten minutes won’t hurt anything.” He slumped a little in his, which she immediately poked at him to correct before she picked up the scissors. There was a large group of them that were going over to Kaler Scott’s house to watch one of the bowl games, Kay having come over to Hunter’s home so they could ride together. However, she had been disappointed in his lack of a haircut, and told him that he had looked mangy. Hunter knew his hair was long and kind of in his eyes, but she didn’t have to go and start using those kind of adjectives…did she? But, Mykayla was a Trent, and when she set her mind on something, she got it. And it also helped that Hunter was overly obedient at times, only putting up a little fight before doing as she said and sitting down in the chair. He knew that Kay managed Jared and Kade’s hair, them requiring nothing more than a set of electric clippers to get their hair cut down short, but Hunter wore his hair longer and he was just a tad bit nervous about this arrangement.
However, it seemed that it only took a few snips and his sister was done, handing him a hand mirror so that he could see her handiwork for himself. “See, now you are just shaggy in an adorable way. Go change your shirt and I‘ll clean up here, okay?” Little did she know it, but she had just sounded like their mother right there. Hunter chose to keep that comment to himself as he went and changed, coming back out moments later to find that Kay had already cleaned up and as waiting on him. Of course he got ribbed pretty good when they arrived at Kaler’s for being made to get his hair cut by his sister, but Hunter was way too used to being the butt of jokes to let something like this get to him. It wasn’t like Jared and Kade had a lot of room to talk, which Hunt was quick to remind them of and that ended most of it. He shot a glare Mykayla’s way, though, to which she just smiled wide and went to take a seat in the living room. Hunter went in to watch the game too, but with him seated, everyone seemed to have this new game of when they walked by him, they had to reach out and mess up his hair, just to keep playing on the fact that he had been late because of haircut. He made threats, said he would start breaking fingers, but of course no one took him seriously because he was the youngest guy there, and he was just…Hunter. Now, had Kade or Kaler made those threats, no one would have touched them. Life didn’t seem fair…
And it was about to get worse, because halftime had rolled around and one of the guys had suggested a quick game of football outside. All Hunter could do was look around the room at Kade, Kaler, and Jared. All three had been jocks in high school and football players. Kaler had even played college ball, which made him like a god at the sport. Kade and Jared had taken their high school team to state twice, and Hunter? Well, he had been an athlete too, but his brothers and Kaler were brutal at this game and they went for blood. Hunter wasn’t like that, and he knew he would be put on a team with the girls. Randi and Mykayla probably wouldn’t even want him, but they would take him just to humor him. They all bundled up in their warm clothing and headed outdoors, Kaler grabbing a football and then the match was on. The girls were safe because Jared didn’t want his fiancée injured in anyway with their wedding being so close, and no one was going to tackle slight, sweet Mykayla. Hunter, however, was screwed. The guys were coming up with clever hair based nicknames for him, and the moment he got the ball he was nothing more but a moving target for them to demolish. It didn’t matter that he could run fast; they always seemed faster and he hit the ground several times.
Eventually, it turned into less of a game and more of a “let’s see who can out tackle the other” and an excuse for them all to goof off and have fun. That was much safer for Hunter, but eventually he turned away from the game to go back inside, finding that he would rather thaw out a little instead of stay out there and suffer more abuse. He shed off his coat and kicked his shoes off, heading into the living kitchen to grab a drink. Once that drink was in hand, Hunter turned and went to the living room where he found Peyton Roth stretched out on the couch, earphones in place and a book in her hands. Hunter had wondered about her, knowing that she lived here now with her brother but not sure if she was around or not as he hadn’t seen her earlier. They had chatted here and there, Hunter liking the younger girl and getting the sense that she was really an enjoyable person underneath all that shyness. “Hey Peyton,” he offered, though she hadn’t heard him at all. Hunter reached forward to tap her shoulder, thinking that it would be better to let his presence there be known rather than to let her glance up and freak out because she hadn’t known he was there. The girl still jumped, Hunter taking a small, quick step back but offering a friendly smile. She removed the headphones and apologized, then said that they had stop meeting like this. Hunter agreed. “I’m sorry that I keep scaring you, but that kind of seems to be our thing,” he said with a small laugh before sitting himself down on an ottoman, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. “You’re right, though. That is a really good book. I’ve only read it twice, but it’s a good series. I’m surprised Kaler has it…” He really didn’t seem the type to have Harry Potter, but Kaler supposedly read everything though Hunter had yet to see the man with a book in his hands. Ever. “But how are you? Hopefully still not on the verge of a heart attack?”

we're anything but ordinary one and the same ,
Hunter Trent was someone that Peyton could see herself really liking. He was one of those nice people that she had come to meet when moving to Arietta and running into her brother. He was sweet and he had a very contagious smile and laugh. She couldn’t help but smile when he was around, though Peyton wasn’t much for laughter. She honestly couldn’t remember ever doing it. There had never been much joy or happiness in her life, most of it spent in fear of her own life and whether or not she would be able to make it through yet another day. Life had been hard, and she had spent too much time concentrating on survival. She had never really had the chance to have fun, not even as a kid. She had never gotten a lot of the things that other kids did. She didn’t even really have much of a childhood, not in comparison with others her age. She and Preston had never had rooms filled with toys and other processions they would barely used. Their clothes were second rate and the only reason they even had them was because of the people in their neighborhood who saw what was going on and took pity on the young girls. They hadn’t been able to do much more than that. It wasn’t like the people in her town had been ignorant of what was going on. Those that lived close to them saw firsthand how bad her father’s temper was, and there had been many issues with him and town some nights when he had gotten too drunk and been crossed. Everyone had known what was going on, why the twins showed up at school in long sleeves year round and always had mysterious bruises. They all had known, and no one had done a damn thing about it.
And then Peyton had lost her sister; the one thing she had always feared would happen. It was only then that anyone had done anything, but by that point it really didn’t matter anymore. Peyton had been lost after losing her sister, unable to function. She hadn’t known what to do or how to survive. Not only that, but she had been so heartbroken after losing her sister that nothing but that one little fact mattered. It had taken months before she could even talk about what had happened that night, and even now she couldn’t think about that night without breaking down into tears. She didn’t like to talk about it, and a lot of the time that she had had to, it had all been mechanical, her having said it all so many times that she didn’t have to think about the words to speak them. Peyton had been so glad when the people had finally decided to leave her alone. It had taken time for the young girl, and to look at her now, one would hardly believe that just a year ago she had been in such a dark place. No one could say that her station had improved much before she had moved in with her older brother. She had been in a foster home with parents that only kept her around for the check they got every week. They weren’t bad, necessarily. They certainly didn’t beat her or mistreat her, but they didn’t really care that she was there, either. She was still poor, having to come up with her own means to get what she wanted, though hers were far more legal than what her sisters had been. She would walk down the hallways of her school, and she was still that girl. She was the poor girl who could barely afford clothes, who had it tough or people thought was just plain weird. She kept to herself, most not wanting much to do with her, and just went through every day the same.
But when she had met her brother, so many new doors had opened. She had been introduced to a lot of his friends over time, meeting Amy Orsino and the rest of the Trents and finding friends in them. She had never really had friends, so that much was new to her. Everyone she had met so far was pretty great, too, and she found that she had a certain fondness for Mykayla and Hunter Trent. They were both just so nice and welcoming, and they were some of the few people Peyton could relax around. Mykayla was such a sweet girl, and Peyton didn’t think there was a person in the world that could dislike her. And Hunter. Well, he was so genuine. He was picked on by his siblings often, and it seemed that he didn’t have much luck when it came to other things as well. That was horrible, but good things always happened to good people in the end. At least that was something she tried to believe these days. Before, no such thought would have crossed her mind. But things were looking up for her, and so Peyton seemed to have a lot more hope and faith than she had once had. She owed that all to Kaler.
“I’m sorry that I keep scaring you, but that kind of seems to be our thing.” She offered him a smile. He was right about that, because it seemed that every time they ran into each other she found herself having a moment of panic before realizing that it was just Hunter and there was nothing to worry about. That was even how they had met, so she guessed they hadn’t really started off on a good foot with that one. “You’re right, though. That is a really good book. I’ve only read it twice, but it’s a good series. I’m surprised Kaler has it…” Peyton shrugged her shoulders, not sure why he had it either, but she had found it among the shelves. “I’ve never read them before, though I definitely understand all the fuss over them now.” Peyton had done very little reading before she had come to Arietta. She hadn’t been able to get her own books, and most of what she did read she had been assigned in school or gotten from the town library. She hadn’t made going to the library and big habit, though, as she was afraid of bringing the books home and them being damaged or lost and her having to pay for them. It was something very likely to happen, even with a girl that had been as careful as Peyton, and she hadn’t wanted to risk it. “But how are you? Hopefully still not on the verge of a heart attack?” She shook her head and smiled. “No, I think we’re safe on that one.” She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “And I’m good. Never been better, actually.” And that was the absolute truth, really, as she couldn’t imagine a time she had been this well off. It was definitely a good thing. “How are things with you?” She fidgeted in her seat, more a habit than from nervousness. Peyton was a very awkward person, both in speech and mannerism, and even being comfortable in her surroundings didn’t take that away from her. “So why are you guys here?” she asked. “I know Kaler must have told me but I can’t seem to remember.” Though there was always a chance that he hadn’t, in fact, told her. Peyton was easy to forget, and Kaler probably still wasn’t used to having an extra person running around his house. It didn’t bother Peyton any, and she was just simply curious.

This was a girl that was still something of a mystery to the residents of Arietta. She wasn’t exactly a newcomer anymore, but how she had gotten here and how she suddenly seemed to fit into the picture was what some of them were still trying to wrap their heads around. There had been a select few that had had the privilege of knowing that Kaler Scott was adopted. It wasn’t like that bit of information really rocked anyone’s world because Kaler had once been a newcomer himself to their small, coastal town and his family wasn’t from around here, either. So what if he had been adopted? That was perfectly acceptable, and Hunter thought that it explained a few things about the other man and some of his behaviors, but that was Hunter’s own opinion. What none of them had really seen coming was the fact that Kaler would have siblings out there, though it wasn’t something that anyone ever put any thought into. Then out of the blue, there had been a new girl in town in the care of a foster family that had shown up on Kaler’s doorstep claiming that she was his half-sister. It turned out to be true, and from there the rest just seemed to fall into place. Being in with Kaler meant that you basically in with the Trent’s as well, and Hunter had been introduced to Peyton because of her newfound relation. She was the quiet sort, but Hunter knew that that wasn’t stopping anyone from warming up to her and making her feel right at home with them.
Kaler had opened his home up to her, building onto a guest bedroom to make it all her own. Mykayla and Amy were extremely fond of the girl, and Jared and Kade were also friendly with her, talking to her and making her a part of every conversation whether she wanted to be or not whenever she was around. Hunter thought that Peyton was slowly but surely coming around, opening up and becoming a part of their little extended family. Hunter was glad to see that she was doing so well, knowing some of her background from what Kaler had mentioned a few times, and unable to belief that a girl this quiet and kind could have possibly endured as much as she had. He just hoped that she realized that she was in the good now, having found good family in Kaler and good friends in the rest of them. They were a loud bunch and it had probably seemed very logical to be wary of them at first, but they were all harmless and would all jump to help Peyton with anything that she needed if the moment ever arose. Except, she would probably not be asking for Hunter, as every time he saw this girl he managed to scare her within inches of her life. It wasn’t something that he meant to do, and it was odd because he was actually the less intimidating one of the bunch and couldn’t purposefully scare anyone whenever he was trying to do it. He felt bad that this was what he kept doing over and over to the poor girl, but she seemed to take it all in good humor.
He glanced down at the book in her hands again, smiling as she said that she now understood what all the fuss was about over that particular series. Hunter couldn’t help but to think that Harry Potter was such a well-known thing now, almost seeming rather old to him as he could remember when the first book had originally been released and all the mania that had resulted from it and the rest of the series. It was funny now how that seemed to have almost faded into the background and the Twilight era began, but Hunter was glad that Peyton could pick up the books and appreciate them for what they were. He always liked to see someone that was interested in books; it seemed to give them more depth as a person. He grinned when she told him that she was not actually on the verge of a heart attack, and that she was actually doing really well. Again, he was so glad to see her doing this well, glad to see that she was okay with all the changes that had been made recently and that she was able to flourish because of them. Then Peyton asked how things were with him, and Hunter offered her a friendly smile. “Oh, you know, about the same. I’m being ridiculed about a haircut Mykayla gave me, and was just made a moving target for your brother and my two to hit as hard as they possible could in a game of backyard football. It’s nothing new.” Hunter was very used to it all by now, and complaining about it would do no good even if he wanted to complain. The truth of the matter was that Hunter knew they picked and poked as a way of showing their affection in an odd kind of way. Let someone else try to pull anything that they did with him, and Kade and Jared would be up in arms ready to kill this someone. Weird, yes, but that was how their family had always functioned.
“So why are you guys here? I know Kaler must have told me but I can’t seem to remember.” “Well, we were here to watch a football game. Then it was halftime and everyone decided to head outside for our own game.” Then he grinned. “I’m the only one that made it back.” Yeah, right. Hunter was really the last one that would have survived a game like that had it been for survival. He laughed at his own joke, knowing that Peyton had to see the humor in that one too. “No, they’re all still out there playing around in the snow. I decided to take a break, but now I seem to have found a good reason to not have to go back out there for round two. Your brother might have played running back before, but he can sure tackle.” Actually, now that Hunter thought about it, Kaler, Kade, and Jared had all played offensive positions, and none of them tackles either. How they knew to hit like that was beyond Hunter, but it really didn’t surprise him either. “That is if you don’t mind. I know you were reading…” Hunter would gladly let her get back to her book if that was what Peyton wanted to do. If she popped her earphones back in and went about her way, Hunter could always turn the game back on and let that be his distraction which would surely be approved when someone came looking for him, wondering where he had disappeared to.

“Oh, you know, about the same. I’m being ridiculed about a haircut Mykayla gave me, and was just made a moving target for your brother and my two to hit as hard as they possible could in a game of backyard football. It’s nothing new.” She smiled, thinking it was actually kind of funny, but feeling bad for Hunter all the same. He was kind of an underdog. He was a nice guy from everything she had ever seen, and she really couldn’t think of anything bad to say about him. Nice people often got taken advantage of and picked on, as seemed to be the case with Hunter. He had been subject to it all his life, though, Peyton figured, as he didn’t seem too concerned about it, though. That wasn’t really a good thing, but that was how it was. “Well I think your haircut looks good,” she offered with a warm smile, not seeing anything at all wrong with it. Mykayla did a really good job, though Peyton couldn’t remember what it had looked like before being subjected to Mykayla, though, and to be honest she didn’t think he looked any different. If her comment made him feel good, though, she was happy to give it. Hunter was a very good looking guy, though Peyton wasn’t one to really notice appearance or even really care about it. It wasn’t something that meant anything to her, as she always had other more important things on her mind. She never really looked at guys either, though in truth they had never really cared about her either. She could appreciate Hunter’s, though, and she knew that if she looked at him more closely like she did when she drew, she would appreciate those features even more. She didn’t, though.
She inquired about why they had all been there, not actually knowing, and not remembering if Kaler had actually told her or not. She knew that she could have always have come out and joined the crowd when they had been out in the living room, but Peyton was never one to feel completely at ease around noisy crowds, even when she did know the people. She had preferred the comfort and quiet of her room, where she could block out the sounds from the living room. Now that she was sitting here with Hunter, though, she couldn’t really complain about being here. “Well, we were here to watch a football game. Then it was halftime and everyone decided to head outside for our own game.” He grinned. “I’m the only one that made it back.” He was clearly trying to be funny, and Peyton couldn’t help but smile at it. Hunter laughed at his own joke, and she found that she liked the sound of it. She couldn’t really explain as to why, but it was nice. “No, they’re all still out there playing around in the snow. I decided to take a break, but now I seem to have found a good reason to not have to go back out there for round two. Your brother might have played running back before, but he can sure tackle.” She could remember Kaler telling her about how he had played football in high school. The entire beginning of their relationship had been finding out more about each other, and that had been one of the things he had touched on in great length. Peyton herself knew nothing about the sport, never really having time or a care for such a thing. She found the whole concept confusing and just didn’t really try to understand it. And she was perfectly content to not grasp the concept.
“That is if you don’t mind. I know you were reading…” She offered him another smile and then set her book down on a nearby coffee table to show he had her full attention. “No, I don’t mind at all.” She sat her iPod down with the book, then turned her body more towards Hunter. “I’d be happy to be your excuse for not going back out there.” She didn’t want him to feel like he had to go back out there to be the guys punching bag, and she was actually quite fond of the idea of spending time with him. Though she had no clue at all what they could talk about. She didn’t really know him all that well, just the occasional chat whenever they happened to be in the same crowd. Though she had started that way with Kaler and look where they were now. Peyton wasn’t much of a talker, really. She was a very quiet girl, preferring to sit back and watch the people around her than actually engaging them. She supposed that it had a bit to do with her past, but also had a great deal to do with her being an artist. Observing things and people was what she did. But as they were here, she should probably say something. She searched her brain for something and went with the first thing that came to her mind. “So how’s your brother’s wedding coming along? It seems to be all anyone talks about lately.” She smiled. Jared Trent had always seemed like a nice guy as far as Peyton could tell. She thought he was slightly crazy, but no more so than his younger sister, Amy, whom she also liked greatly. She had seen Miranda James on occasion, too, and Peyton’s opinion of her was nothing but good. Kaler had told her that she should go to it, hang out and get to know some more of the people, and that there would be others there that she knew. Peyton didn’t know about that, though. All she could imagine was it being awkward and strange, though she had a feeling that Kaler might try to get her to go anyway. She supposed she’d just have to wait and see, though.

This girl probably thought that Hunter was nothing more than a punching bag for his brothers and her own. That was kind of what he had made it sound like, and he supposed that there were times when they took advantage because he was the youngest, using the excuses of “I’m the oldest,” or “I’m older, that’s why” to justify whatever it was that they were doing . But really, Hunter knew that there were times when he had stuck it to all of them just as well, getting the last laugh though that seemed to happen a lot less often than it did for them. He was just the guy that tended to find himself in the more humorous kind of sticky situations, and he was just fortunate that he had been blessed with a good sense of humor to have been able to make it through his life thus far. And again, he knew that there was nothing meant by what Kade, Jared, and Kaler did. They were all just the type that liked to have fun, and sometimes it just so happened that their fun came at Hunter’s expense but that was okay. He was the type of guy that laughed along with them, and at least he had Mykayla that was sweet and kind and wouldn’t dream of doing anything to him like Kade and Jared had over the years. And now it seemed that he had Peyton that would offer kind words, as she liked his haircut. Her comment made him smile, though he knew that he didn’t look different at all with just the trimming Kay had done.
But, even knowing that there was no need to be in fear of what might await him outside from the others, Hunter would still be just as content to sit there and talk with Peyton some. Hunter wouldn’t take offense or anything if she would rather go back to reading, because he had already thought that he could easily just turn on the TV if she could read with the noise in the background, which was something that Hunter had never been able to do himself. If there was any kind of noise around while he was trying to read, he always ended up closing the book because there was just no way he was going to be able to absorb what he was trying to read, and just then he felt a little envious of Peyton’s ability. What a dorky thing to be envious of… Anyway, Hunter was glad to hear that the younger girl wasn’t going to mind his company. She probably thought that he was lame or something, looking for an excuse to not have to go back outside and get his ass kicked around the yard, but that was okay too. “I’d be happy to be your excuse for not going back out there.” Yeah. It probably did look a little bad, but Hunter was the easy going type of person that he didn’t really care. He was sure that Peyton understood, at least somewhat, and wouldn’t judge him for it. At least, she didn’t seem like the kind of girl that would make assumptions. She reminded him of Mykayla in that way, and it was refreshing.
Then there was a small lull of silence, Hunter sitting there with nothing but a friendly smile on his face. He knew that Peyton was the most extroverted person out there, and often times seemed to be more comfortable with sitting back and looking out into the crowd rather than being a part of it. It was odd, but it was actually something that Hunter saw that she and Kaler had in common. Kaler wasn’t at all shy or backward in any situation, but he was a guy that Hunter had come to know that was comfortable with silence, and a guy that was very much comfortable with doing his own thing even if that meant being a bit of a loner while doing it. Kaler and Peyton were both strong characters whether they realized it or not, but it was just interesting for Hunter to be able to look at them and see the similarities that they shared despite having not grown up together. Hunter was also someone that could be comfortable in silence, but he felt like he should actually have something to say to Peyton rather than just sit there and make them both feel awkward. It wasn’t like he knew too much about her, though, other than her relation to Kaler and the fact that she had just recently moved in with her brother. Luckily, Hunter was the kind of guy that could make conversation out of nothing (a Trent gift, it seemed), and just as he had been about to make some kind of comment to hopefully grow into a conversation, Peyton beat him to it. “So how’s your brother’s wedding coming along? It seems to be all anyone talks about lately.” Ah, the Trent-James wedding. How could anyone overlook that topic of conversation these days? She was right; it was big deal and everyone seemed to be buzzing about it.
“Oh, it’s coming. Jared and Randi just got the last of the details all pulled together. Now all that’s left to do before they actually say ‘I do’ is the bachelor/bachelorette parties, which are going to be interesting in themselves, I think.” Hunter knew what they had planned for Jared, and it was going to be a night that they probably weren’t going to be able to remember all of even if they wanted to. As for Randi’s party, Kay had talked about a few of the things that she knew were going to happen, and Hunter half wished that he could be there to see Randi’s reaction to what those girls were going to do to her. The other part of him knew that there was a possibility for violence and he wasn’t going to touch that one with a ten foot pole. “But they’re excited, and really happy. The wedding and everything…it’s just really going to be a good time.” There was no doubting that at all. After all, it was Jared and Randi. Hunter was happy for them, but then again the entire town was happy that the couple had finally wised up and actually became a couple. “Are you going to go? You should, you know. My mom is preparing the food at the reception and she is quite frankly the best cook in town. If for no other reason, go for the food.” He laughed again, looking down briefly before looking back up at Peyton. “And the cake, too. I have under good authority that this is going to be the best cake in the world. Vidette is making it, and while she won’t give Kaler specifics, she says it’s like nothing we’ve had before.” Which was a little scary, considering Jared and Randi and picked this cake, but it couldn’t be that bad, right?

The wedding of Jared Trent and Miranda James was all anyone could talk about, at least as far as Peyton could tell. Occasionally people would find something else to talk about, like Brittany Hale had done this to so and so, her little argument with Kade at the restaurant had generated quite a buzz for several days, but it had eventually faded out and talk of the wedding was back on. Peyton had lived in this town for a year and it didn’t take long to learn the stories of just about everyone that lived there. She had heard a lot about the Hales and the Trents. Kaler Scott’s name had also come up a lot, though she hadn’t made the connection that he was her brother until later on. She hadn’t fully believed her social worker when she had told her. How could she have possibly had an older brother and not known about him? Honestly, though, it wasn’t all that surprising when Peyton sat down and really thought about it. Her mother had had her and her sister before running away and abandoning them. It was very likely that she had done the same thing to others, too. Peyton could have a lot of half siblings out there and not even know it. If she had one, having more was always very possible. But Peyton really liked her brother. He was very different from her, but she could definitely see traits in him that Preston had also had. She sometimes even wondered how her sister would have liked Kaler and this town, but that was always so painful to think about and she would push those thoughts away before she could fully entertain them. Her lost twin sister wasn’t something she enjoyed thinking about often.
“Oh, it’s coming. Jared and Randi just got the last of the details all pulled together. Now all that’s left to do before they actually say ‘I do’ is the bachelor/bachelorette parties, which are going to be interesting in themselves, I think.” The whole bachelor/bachelorette party thing was very new to Peyton. Hell, the whole wedding thing was new to her. She hadn’t known many people in her life, and never anyone that got married. She had never had friends of the family or things like that. She wasn’t even completely sure what went on during those kinds of things, but she would take Hunter’s word for it. She had heard some talk from Amy Orsino about what she and her friend Zoey had planned for Miranda during hers, but Peyton didn’t always listen when Amy talked about such things. She didn’t really know about them and it wasn’t like she was going to be included in any of it anyway. “But they’re excited, and really happy. The wedding and everything…it’s just really going to be a good time.” Peyton offered Hunter a smile, again taking his word for it, her not knowing better. Everyone seemed excited for it, though, and so that must mean that there was something about it that was really worth looking forward to. “Are you going to go? You should, you know. My mom is preparing the food at the reception and she is quite frankly the best cook in town. If for no other reason, go for the food.” Peyton offered up another smile to Hunter. ”Kaler keeps telling me I am, but I don’t know. I don’t really know anyone.” Sure, Peyton knew the Trents and some of Kaler’s other odd friends. And she had met some others at school, but for the most part she knew very few people, and to her, the thought of going to the wedding just seemed… well… awkward. She would most likely end up sitting at a table by herself all night, bored out of her mine and wishing that Kaler would just take her home. Not only that, but what would she wear? It wasn’t like she really had wedding-type clothes in her closet. She barely had any at all.
“And the cake, too. I have under good authority that this is going to be the best cake in the world. Vidette is making it, and while she won’t give Kaler specifics, she says it’s like nothing we’ve had before.” That was…interesting. Peyton wasn’t really an authority on cakes, though. But she would, once again, take Hunter’s word on that one. She adverted her eyes from Hunter, looking down into the bowl of grapes in her lap, taking one and sucking on it before popping it into her mouth, slowly lifting her dark eyes back to him. She swallowed. “I’m sure it’s good. Vidette wouldn’t give them a bad cake,” she commented. She didn’t know the girl very well, but she was fairly sure of that. It seemed like a stupid statement, but Peyton really didn’t know what else to say. Conversations weren’t her strong suit. She wasn’t much of a talker to begin with, and then count in the fact that she wasn’t completely comfortable around the older man and, well, it was easy to understand. Peyton was already started to fidget under his gaze, picking at her grapes and eating them slowly. Finally, she looked at him again. “You’re going to be in it, right? At least I think that’s what Kaler said…” She knew that her brother was going to be in it, and she was almost certain that Hunter was too, as he was the brother of the groom. Yet another stupid question. She fidgeted, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and looking away. She was lost for something else to say and so she left it at that.
