[bg=030303][th]

[bg=030303] .. [bg=101010] [scrolly:h(400),w(280),sy] This was something that Kaler had actually been meaning to do for a while. There had just seemed not to be enough time in a day to actually get around to doing it, and unfortunately it had just kept being the thing that he had put off several times over. But two weeks ago, Kaler had taken the first step toward actually doing this and had purchased the piece that key to this plan being successful. It hadn’t been difficult to locate at all, and it hadn’t even cost as much as he had planned on it costing. That had been the easy part. The thing that seemed to be putting a wrench into this whole idea was getting the time to actually put it into play. It seemed that his work schedule was always in the way, or something else would come up that he really didn’t have any right to say no to. But, he had finally gotten an afternoon when he didn’t have to work, there was nothing else going on, the weather was fair, and Peyton was home. There had been a large part of him that had felt like sleeping through that afternoon, as Kaler was mostly a night owl that could easily stay up all night and sleep the daylight away, but this was much more important and something that he needed to make himself do before this opportune moment passed him by. So, he had gotten dressed in a long sleeved shirt and a pair of jeans that he assumed were mostly clean, and then headed to Peyton’s room and giving a light knock on the door.
The two siblings had actually been getting along quite well since Peyton had come into his custody and had moved in with him. Kaler was learning how to cook for her without potentially killing her and it seemed that she was more trusting of him and less wary with each passing day. Kaler liked her and got along with her well, finding that he and his sister did have similarities and a few mutual interests. He loved her like any brother would love his sister which was why he pried her out of her room and outside into the cold January air. He was teaching this girl to drive, and today was going to be lesson one. They went outside to the car that Kaler had purchased, him handing his sister the keys and then going to take the passenger side seat. The intro stuff was pretty basic, telling her where things were and letting her get feel for it. Then they were moving, and Kaler was proud that she seemed to be catching on rather quickly. Granted, they weren’t going that fast and they were on a small back road that went behind their house, but it was progress for a first time driver. “Okay, so you see these few patches of ice and snow? Try not to hit your brake or the gas on those.” The road wasn’t that bad, but there were a few places where things had not melted off. The car that they were in had decent tires and all-wheel drive, but Kaler was instructing and wanting Peyton to be cautious.

Things were going really well for Peyton Roth. She was loving her room and the home she shared with her older brother, Kaler Scott. It had been a somewhat slow relationship, Peyton not fully trusting him at first, but she had quickly come around. In the month or so since she had moved in with Kaler, things had been going very well with them. Kaler was starting to get better with the whole cooking food for her thing, Peyton found herself relaxing more when she was around him, which was a pretty big thing. She was content to sit on the couch with him some evenings and just be there. Kaler wasn’t one who felt the need to fill every silence, and Peyton was a quiet girl. Truth be told, Kaler probably didn’t even realize that she was around half the time. Peyton was quiet, and she was able to go unnoticed with little trouble at all. She didn’t really bother Kaler with much, keeping to herself and only asking for something when she desperately needed it. They worked quite well together, as surprising as that might be. It was a pretty good setup for young Peyton, though. She had never been so happy in a home, and she was actually at ease in her home. That was something most people didn’t think about, but it was something Peyton had never had. She had never been comfortable or felt safe in her own home. Now she did. She knew no one could ever bother her here. She trusted Kaler with her life, and she knew that he was more than capable of handling anyone or anything that might try to get in and do harm. And Peyton wouldn’t really trade that feeling for anything.
That afternoon, Kaler roused Peyton from her room. She was very confused as to what it was that he had planned when he had came to get her, but she went along with it, dressing in warm clothes because of the cold and meeting Kaler outside in the driveway. There was a new car there, one Peyton had never seen before. She stared at it in confusion before he handed her the keys and walked to the passenger side of the car. Oh no. The realization sank in and Peyton stared at the car with wide eyes. She looked down at the keys in her hand, suddenly having the urge to throw them across the driveway and make a run for the house. Peyton Roth had never, ever been in the driver’s seat of a car. In fact, she’d never driven anything! It wasn’t like she had had a great father that was willing to teach her all of it. She had never even thought about such a thing, but Kaler clearly had. With a little coaxing, Kaler got her behind the wheel of the car. He gave her a basic crash course in the car and what everything did and how it worked. She felt as if he was speaking an entirely different language, and she bit her lip, feeling completely overwhelmed. She tried, though. “Kaler, really, I… I don’t think this is a good idea.” Not a good idea at all. He did some more coaxing and finally convinced her to actually start the car and start driving. Peyton was completely tight and tense as they drove, her knuckles white on the steering wheel and she had to keep reminding herself to breathe. As they drove on that little back road, Peyton couldn’t have been going faster than thirty miles an hour, and that was actually her fast speed. “Okay, so you see these few patches of ice and snow? Try not to hit your brake or the gas on those.” She nodded at Kaler’s words and did what he said.
They made it through that part, but it was not more than a couple minutes later that things went horribly wrong. A car came around the turn, going much faster than Peyton, and she freaked out. The next thing she knew they were in the ditch, the other car was gone, and Peyton thought she might seriously have a heart attack. She turned slowly to look at Kaler, a shocked look etched onto her face. “I told you this was a bad idea!” was all she could say.

[bg=030303][th]

[bg=030303] .. [bg=101010] [scrolly:h(400),w(280),sy] His blue eyes skimmed over the readouts on the dash, watching her speed. He grinned to himself, seeing that the pre-owned car had finally reached thirty miles per hour. Peyton probably thought that it was terrifying and that she was going terribly slow compared to what others would travel this road at, but Kaler was actually really proud of his sister. For her first time driving anything, she was doing really, really well. He could see that she was nervous, and she had let him know that she didn’t think that this was a good idea at the start of this adventure, but Kaler had faith in Peyton. Every teenager went through this, learning and figuring it out and then once they did, there was no turning back. Kaler could remember himself learning how to drive, first getting behind the wheel of an old farm truck that his mother had kept around the ranch for farm use, his father riding shotgun as they drove around an open field. The difference between Kaler and his younger sibling was that he had been fearless, his fifteen-year-old self not able to grasp the wheel and stomp the gas quickly enough. That first lesson had been all that he needed, and after that he was all too eager for any learning experience either of his parents threw his way. Kaler drove every kind of vehicle they had, trucks and cars and SUV’s. The day he had gone to take his driver’s test, he had drove his mother’s Ford truck and even executed parallel parking that bitch perfectly. Afterward, he and Beth Scott went back to the ranch, connected the gooseneck trailer to that same truck, and Kaler was driving north toward Montana with a load of horses behind him.
Peyton was obviously a different kind of kid, not up for such daunting tasks at all and in a very different situation but she was doing well. She had heeded his words about not hitting the gas or the brake on slick spots, and Kaler could only imagine what the poor girl would do if the car slid just a little with her. Being an all-wheel drive, he had faith that the car wouldn’t do anything drastic, but Peyton was not at all ready for something like that. And, she obviously wasn’t ready to meet another car coming down the narrow road in the opposite direction. Kaler tried to talk her through it, told her not to jerk the wheel, not to speed up or slam on the brakes but to guide the car over gently…. He should have just let her stop in the middle of the road and let the other bastard go around them, because Peyton panicked and the next thing that Kaler saw through the windshield was the snow covered bank that they were headed for, the car’s front end inevitable striking it and stopping abruptly in the ditch. A deep sigh passed through Kaler’s lips as he brought a hand to rub over his face, mind already thinking through this one. “I told you this was a bad idea!” Kaler turned his eyes over on his sister. “It’s okay. We can fix this.” Kaler had had cars hung up way worse than this before; this was no big deal at all. But then there was a loud BOOM sound from the front end of the car, causing Peyton to jump and Kaler just to turn his gaze there in disbelief as smoke started to roll out from beneath the hood. He had to stop his jaw from dropping and his eyes from rolling at their predicament. “Less okay, but still manageable,” he said, almost grinning as he certainly found amusement here.
He had her cut the engine, and then Kaler got out of the car and had her pop the hood. He couldn’t get in front of the car, so maneuvering around and getting a look to see what had seemingly blown up was a little difficult. Luckily Kaler spotted the main issue easily, as it was just a hose that had been jarred lose and needed replaced. What Kaler did was only a temporary hold, but it would be good enough. Before getting back inside of the vehicle, Kaler tried to kick some dirt up around the tire, giving the tread on it something to grip onto for the next event. He let Peyton slide on over to the passenger side and Kaler took the wheel, still assuring her that it was okay. “Just watch. It’ll be fine.” First Kaler simply tried to drive the car out of the ditch, but when that didn’t work, he had to floor it and burn his way out of it, fighting the wheel and the burnt rubber from the tires able to be smelled, but he eventually jerked it and with a somewhat dramatic slide, jump, and landing sequence, the car was finally free. Kaler was smiling as he looked over at Peyton, seeing her white as a ghost and claiming that she was never driving again. “This is where you’re wrong. You’re driving us home, Peyton.” And he was dead serious about it, too.

It just figured that something like this would happen to Peyton. It figured that she would experience something that would traumatize the poor girl and make her want to never get in another car again. And here they were, stuck in the ditch on a rather deserted back road. She had known that this would be a disaster. It hadn’t been a good idea from the start, but Kaler hadn’t believed her. And now look where they were. “It’s okay. We can fix this.” She stared at him in disbelief. And about that time there was a loud boom and smoke started pouring out from underneath the hood. Peyton looked back at Kaler, her more than certain that she could see disbelief across his face. The look on her own clearly challenged him to say the same thing now. Peyton knew absolutely nothing about cars, but she was more than sure that sounds like that and smoke were never, ever a good thing. “Less okay, but still manageable.” She stared at him in disbelief, especially when she saw the grin on his face. He found this all amusing? Peyton found it anything but amusing. She was absolutely terrified and she hadn’t wanted to do this from the very beginning. Driving was not her thing, it wasn’t something she was cut out for. Peyton was a flighty personality. She didn’t handle high stress situations very well, and this was definitely one of those situation. And Kaler found it amusing? This was wonderful.
Kaler instructed her to turn off the engine and she gladly did so, sitting there with her hands in her lap as he popped the hood and looked around. She couldn’t see what he was doing, but she figured he found the source of the problem because he shut the hood shortly after. He came to the driver’s side door and told her to move into the passenger seat, which she gladly did. She intended to stay there too, and quickly fastened her seat belt. It was then all about getting out the car out of the ditch. “Just watch. It’ll be fine.” Peyton was not convinced in the slightest. But at least Kaler was doing this part and not making her do it, so she couldn’t really complain about that much. Kaler tried a couple different things and Peyton just about sure that they were going to die before he finally pulled the car out and they were solidly on the road. She was pretty sure there was no color to her at all after that, and all she could do was stare out the windshield with wide eyes. She shook her head slowly. “I am never driving again,” she said in a small, monotone voice, thinking this was probably the worst thing she had ever done in her life. There was no way she was ever getting behind that wheel again. “This is where you’re wrong. You’re driving us home, Peyton.” That knocked her out of her state of shock and she turned to look at him, her eyes still wide. “What? No! No, no, no, no, no!” She shook her head. She was set on that much. She felt as if she had just gone through a near death experience. She wasn’t ready to experience that again anytime soon. “No, No! I’m not doing it! I’m not driving again!” But of course, Kaler was going to argue her one it, that much she was certain of.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,400,true]
-----------------A YOUNG GIRL -----------------two hands on the wheel . |
[bg=030303][th]

[bg=030303] .. [bg=101010] [scrolly:h(400),w(280),sy] There was is an expression that everyone always uses in situations like these, and that was “if you fall off the horse, you got to get right back on again.” Kaler had heard it in several movies, read it in a couple of movies, and heard it applied to several situations throughout his lifetime. It was a commonly said thing by parents that were teaching their children anything, but Kaler absolutely felt that one didn’t fully understand what that saying meant until you had literally come off a horse and had to get back on. He had grown up on a ranch in Texas, and he knew his way around a barn and with the horses. He had taken a couple nasty spills in his lifetime, and he knew how easy it would have been to develop a deep rooted fear of riding if he hadn’t been made to sit on the horses again after falling. It would just be there in the back of your mind, wariness building and soon enough you talk yourself right out of it because, what if you fall again? It was the same principle that people applied to these other life lessons; even though you failed, you couldn’t allow yourself to give up because after that it was just harder to start again. Maybe it was all a little cliché, and he sure as hell felt like an older brother as he stared down Peyton while he told her that she was going to drive them home. If he let her quit now, that would be the end of it and Kaler wasn’t letting her give up so easily.
She seemed pretty convinced that she was not driving again, fear setting in and her thinking that she was going to get her way. Kaler tried not to roll his eyes at her. She should have known how stubborn Kaler could be by now, and he wasn’t the kind of guy that didn’t get his way often. “Fine, then you best start walking because I sure as hell am not driving.” Luckily, it was rather cold out and the daylight was starting to dim. Peyton wasn’t one for the cold, and Kaler knew that she wouldn’t walk home in the dark. “Or, you know, we can sit here all night. Either way, this car isn’t moving until you man up and drive it.” Kaler opened his door, got out and walked around the front of the car and then opened up the passenger side door when Peyton still sat. Kaler didn’t like to be harsh with the girl, but she would thank him for this eventually. He leaned down, a sigh passing through his lips. “You really aren’t going to make me start counting to three or some shit like those annoying parents do, are you? Come on, Peyton. Scoot over, and we’ll do this again. Next time you meet a car, you can just stop in the middle of the road and make them go around you.” That seemed rather reasonable, did it not? And, there wasn’t a ditch to run into on the side of the road that they would travel going back, so the odds of them getting back to the house without another incident were rather good.
