When it got cold outside, there was nothing that Mykayla liked more than a mug full of her mother's famous hot chocolate. Marion Trent was known for this hot chocolate, all the neighborhood kids coming over to the house when they were all young and snowy afternoons just to enjoy a mug full to the rim of it. Now the Trent Bed and Breakfast would be buzzing with that same kind of life, people pouring themselves into the back door and asking Marion if she thought it was okay for them to have a cup. She would cheerfully oblige, making this something like a winter tradition in their small town. Kay had no idea what it was that Marion did to this hot chocolate to make it so delicious and sought after, but there had to be a secret ingredient that she added when no one was looking. Mykayla had been attempting to duplicate it for years, but to no avail. Today, though, she was without her mother's hot chocolate. She was out in town, and it wasn't all that far down the road to the B&B, but Mykayla knew better than to try and make it there. Her stomach was working against her, and she had pulled into the nearest lot she could find. She had tried to maintain her composure, smiling at the people she knew inside as she made her way to the ladies' room, and then puked her guts out with no kind of dignity to it at all. She was just thankful no one else had been in the restroom and that she was able to clean herself up without anyone poking their nose in, trying to be helpful when really they would just seem in the way. Kay had been dealing with this for almost three weeks now, and sadly, she was getting used to her stomach's reaction to her treatments.
After she fixed herself up and popped a mint into her mouth, Mykayla reappeared in the front of the local cafe where she had her emergency stop, offering smiles as she stood in line and chatted with the people there. She hoped that none of them noticed how the color had gone from her face, or how forced her smiles seemed to be, and really, no one did. When it was her turn to order, she got a simple hot chocolate and a cookie, the snack that she had been considering for herself at home and thinking about when her stomach had turned. Kay just decided to take that snack here instead, knowing that it would look odd if she ran in and ran out, and no one here needed any reason to ask questions. She paid for her things and then took them from the counter, going in search of a seat. It was then that she caught sight of a friend, a genuine smile touching her lips. She didn't even think as she approached, setting her items down again on an empty table as she came at Jem Hale from behind quietly, sneaking up close and placing her hands over his eyes. "Guess who?" she said, lips close to his ear as she still wore that pleasant smile.

by the time we say goodnight i'll know if this is right ,
James Hale was so glad that he didn’t have to work today. He loved his job, truly he did, but after the week he’d had with work, it was nice not having to worry about any of that. Being an EMT had its advantages. It had its disadvantages too though. Some days he had to work late, taking night shifts and those could be good or bad depending on where you stood. Usually the worst accidents took place at night, what with the drinking many of the teenagers did and the late night parties that often took place in the wintertime. Given the bad weather they sometimes tended to have and it was a nightmare. However, sometimes things could be rather slow as many people didn’t venture out too much after dark. It just meant that Jem would have to sleep most of the day and stay up throughout the night. However, what really killed him was the switching on and off. You know, some days working the night shift, others working the day shift. It could be very tiring, and he was sure feeling that today. There was one other thing that made him really love his job, though, and that was the pretty little nurse he’d woken up next to yesterday morning. Shayne Brennan was unlike just about any other girl he knew, and that was definitely a good thing. He had quickly found himself falling for her and wanting more out of what they had together. Thankfully she had felt the same and so all had been well. She meant a great deal to him, and he hadn’t had this strong of a relationship with anyone in a very long time.
That morning, Jem found himself driving into town for coffee. Shayne had obviously taken the last of whatever he had had, and he was actually quite sad to find that there was no more left in the can. He was going to make a trip to the store, but before doing that, he was going to stop in at the nearest cafe and get some coffee there, and maybe some breakfast as well. He desperately needed woken up, that was for sure, and he couldn’t possibly even think of tackling his insane grocery list without something to wake him up. Jem parked his car in the parking lot and then headed inside, waiting in line and getting the strongest coffee they had, as well as a blueberry muffin. He sat down and started in on it, practically able to feel the coffee taking affect after his first sip. Anything was an improvement at this point. He was enjoying his muffin when hands slid over his eyes and a whisper came in his ear. "Guess who?" A grin slid onto the young man’s face, him knowing instantly who it was that had taken place behind him. It was a voice he would know anywhere; one he could never forget. “Hmm, that wouldn’t be Miss Mykayla Trent, now would it?” When she released him, he looked over at her with a grin. “Well whataya know. Hey there stranger?” He indicated the vacant seat in front of him with his arm. “Would you give me the pleasure of your company this fine morning?” Mykayla Trent. There was someone he hadn’t expected to see today, but he couldn’t say he was disappointed in the least. He adored this girl, and the chances he got to see her were far too few in between.

She hadn’t been planning on coming in here at all, and it had actually seemed like a hindrance rather than something that she had wanted to do. Mykayla would have loved so much to be at the bed and breakfast right now, because she would have been if not for this emergency pit stop. She loved seeing her parents, and she would have devoured her mug of Marion’s famous hot chocolate and some of her homemade chocolate chip cookies without even thinking about it. She would have been warm and right at home, probably bombarded by Amy and her hyper little self, happy that one of her older siblings was there to spend time with her. Spending her money on lesser treats here and eating here wasn’t something that she had had in mind for her morning, but as that saying goes, everything happens for a reason. Mykayla was a firm believer in that, had to be a believer in that in the past as she had dealt with a few hardships and heartaches, and especially had to now as she made her way through each passing day with her newfound disease. So maybe Mykayla was meant to come into this nice little dinner to have her episode and then have to try and cover for it in some way, because at least then she would have the opportunity to run into Jem, a friend that she didn’t get to see nearly as often as she would like to nowadays. They had gone their separate ways, started living their lives without one another being such an intimate part of them, but that didn’t mean they should become strangers either.
Of course he would recognize her voice, a small giggle passing through her lips as she removed her small hands from over his eyes and glad to see a grin on Jem’s lips as he turned and looked up at her. He gestured to the empty seat in front of him and asked if she would do him the pleasure of being his company that morning, Mykayla smiling in return. “Why of course.” Like there was ever a chance that she would turn him down. She quickly turned to getter her things and then sat herself down at the table, offering Jem the brightest smile that she could muster for him. “Jem Hale, look at you. You know I think I was beginning to forget what you looked like because I haven’t seen you in so long,” she teased before taking a sip of her warm drink, her eyes still lingering on his overly hansom face. There was no way that Kay was ever going to forget Jem, and he knew that. He was that guy that had stolen her heart, made her love him, had been her first everything, and he meant so much to her that Kay was very sure that there would always be a part of her heart that would belong to him. That was in the past, though, and they were presently just friends, but that was what Kay had wanted; she couldn’t ask for more. “How are you? How’s Shayne?” Kay knew all about Jem’s new girlfriend, and really couldn’t express just how happy she was for them. She still smiled over at him, though, delighted to have found him as company after such a crummy start to her morning.

by the time we say goodnight i'll know if this is right ,
“Why of course.” Jem grinned, his green eyes watching the beautiful girl as she gathered up her stuff and took the seat across from him. This was definitely an unexpected, yet pleasant, surprise, Jem thinking that he wouldn’t have been more pleased to see anyone else. Except maybe Shayne. Because Jem was always pleased when he got to see his girlfriend, even though he saw her just about all the time. But that was a good thing, right? It wouldn’t have been good if he dreaded the thought of seeing his girl, or that he wanted to see someone else. But Mykayla Trent held a special place in his heart, him never feeling quite the same things for others as he had once felt for her. She was an amazing girl, and he wasn’t the only guy to ever notice that. Those guys hadn’t really appreciated it, though, and so they in no way had deserved such a great girl. “Jem Hale, look at you. You know I think I was beginning to forget what you looked like because I haven’t seen you in so long.” He laughed, shaking his head at her joke. “Well I could never forget such a pretty face,” he replied. “I think you only get more beautiful every time I see you.” If that were even possible. Mykayla had always been a beautiful girl. She had once meant a great deal to him, she still did. Jem didn’t think he could ever not care about her. He had known the girl for a long time, the Trents and Hales being very close family friends. He had grown up around Mykayla and her brothers, had literally watched her grow up, and he was always one of the ones that looked out for her. Even after their breakup that hadn’t changed. He doubted that could ever change.
“How are you? How’s Shayne?” Jem took a drink of his coffee, trying to get the caffeine into his veins to wake him up, though Mykayla’s presence had done wonders for that, too, his excitement and happiness at seeing her probably doing more for him than his coffee could. “I’m good. Can’t complain. Nothing all that interesting to report.” He took another drink and then sat the cup on the table. “Shayne’s good. We’re good. We’re at that drawer phase. Though I think if she brings over anymore clothes I’m going to be kicked out of my dresser.” He grinned, only joking slightly. After Shayne’s birthday she had brought over some things. That coupled with what had already been there scattered around her house she ended up with two drawers instead of one. But Jem couldn’t really complain about that. He didn’t mind her taking over his dresser in the slightest. He didn’t have all that much located in the drawers, anyway, most of his clothes taking up the closet. “And how have you been? Good? How’s the family? I haven’t seen too much of them lately.” That was mostly his fault, though, as he had been working a lot. His work schedule was going to be loosening up soon, though, so then he’d be able to catch up with those that had otherwise been neglected. Maybe he’d even get to see a little more of the beautiful girl sitting in front of him. That wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.

A funny little thought danced around in the back of Mykayla's mind as she sat there across the table from her ex-boyfriend. Jem was always the one that had been jumping in to save her, whether it was literally to save her from a prick of an ex that had beaten Mykayla to a pulp for not sleeping with him and taking her to the hospital, or just by being the one person to make her smile that day. Jem had always been a part of her life, their families very close and their childhoods intertwining because of it, but Jem was one of the few spectacular people that Mykayla could ever hope to share a part of herself with in life. He had treated her so well, made her feel like she was living in a fairytale, and she knew that when that part of their lives had been ended at her own hand, it had to of hurt him. She had never wanted to do such a thing, had never dreamed that she would be able to separate herself from someone like him, but that time had come and she had found the strength to do it. Even so, he had never stopped being a great friend to her, and it seemed that neither of them could keep from smiling when they were with each other despite the past. Even though she still literally felt like hell, just being able to sit there and chat with Jem could make it all seem better. And, you know, the flattering comments couldn't hurt anything either though Kay didn't feel all that beautiful right now.
She sat there, thoroughly interested in what he had to say about what as going on in his life and to hear about him and his new girlfriend. Kay couldn't help but to grin as she heard that they were at the drawer phase because that was just so precious and adorable and so sweet! She could remember how those days had felt, what kind of a step that was and how full a heart could fill with all that love and caring for just one person. "That's so sweet, though. I'm glad that you two are doing so well." And she meant every word. Jem would know that, as Mykayla was one of the most sincere people on the face of th planet. He would also realize that she wished for nothing but his happiness, and that she was glad he could find it with someone as good and deserving as Shayne. Then Jem was asking about her and her own family. She bit on her bottom lip a little nervously, but only for a second and only because she knew she was going to have to lie again, and that wasn't something she was accustomed to doing with Jem. "I've been fine. Keeping busy." That was the closest to the truth that she could get right now, and it was just a vague way of lying. She hated it, but she couldn't tell him... "And my family is absolutely crazy, as usual. If it isn't Kade or Hunter doing something, it's Jared and Randi planning for their wedding and Amy up to no good." That was nothing new, though. Mykayla took another sip of her hot chocolate, and tried to pick a bite at her cookie. "I was actually on my way to the B&B, but I decided to stop in here instead. I'm glad I did now, though." She smiled warmly over at him. "We need to do something sometime soon. Whenever you're free." That she knew had to happen with absolute certainty.

Mykayla Trent was probably one of the most amazing people Jem had ever had the pleasure of knowing. He had grown up alongside her and her brothers, and watched this loving girl grow up into the woman she was today. He couldn’t believe how loving and optimistic she was about everything. Even after the incident that had taken place before they had gotten together, she still found it in herself to open herself up to love and take a chance at them. It had been truly remarkable from Jem’s perspective, but then Mykayla was just that kind of girl. She was unique, and that was never a bad thing. And here she was now, being so supportive of his relationship with someone else. It was actually really nice to have her approval on it. Because Shayne was the new chapter in his life, and she meant a lot to him. It was just a good feeling to know that Mykayla liked his girlfriend. It was kind of like the feeling of wanting your girlfriend to win your family’s approval, because without it things would never be as good as they were. Mykayla was like a little sister to him now, and he valued her opinion just as much as he did Britt’s. Crazy as that might be. He should never had doubted that Mykayla wouldn’t, though. Shayne was an amazing girl, and she and Jem were good together. They didn’t have issues like a lot of couples did and they got along really well. Sometimes it was almost too good to be true, but Jem knew it was.
"That's so sweet, though. I'm glad that you two are doing so well." He smiled over at Mykayla then took another drink of his coffee. The drawer phase was a pretty big step, though it hadn’t really felt like it at all. He loved having a little space in his home for Shayne, and he would be more than happy to create more. "I've been fine. Keeping busy." He noticed the way she bit her lip but didn’t say anything. It made him slightly curious, though. "And my family is absolutely crazy, as usual. If it isn't Kade or Hunter doing something, it's Jared and Randi planning for their wedding and Amy up to no good." He laughed. Her family was quite crazy, and he was sure that Amy was doing her usual thing of being a trouble maker. It was what she was best at, but they all loved her anyway. And Jared and Randi’s wedding was the talk of town, being one of the biggest things to happen there in a while. It was a good thing, though, and he was happy for him. Kade coming back to town had been a pretty big deal, and the fight with his sister in Rifter’s restaurant that followed had also been a big talk. Jem in no way approved of what the older man had done to his sister, but it was something he was choosing to stay out of, knowing that Britt was giving him more than his fair share of punishment for that, as she was not a girl to let things go easily. He hadn’t talked to Kade either, and he really didn’t plan on doing so. If and when he got back on Britt’s good side, then they’d talk.
"I was actually on my way to the B&B, but I decided to stop in here instead. I'm glad I did now, though." She smiled and Jem smiled back at her. “Well I’m glad you did, too. Made my morning a lot more fun.” He took another drink of his coffee. "We need to do something sometime soon. Whenever you're free." He set his cup down. “Well I’m free today. I have to go grocery shopping because Shayne has eaten me out of house and home, but you’re welcome to come along.” He was teasing about Shayne, though very serious that she should come with it. It would definitely me a lot more fun with Mykayla around.

Sitting there with Jem, Mykayla was reminded of how she used to feel like she could sit and stare into his eyes forever and that would be good enough. No words would have to be said, nothing would have to be established. All she would need in her world was him; it would be complete. It was amazing to have that one person in life that could make you feel that way, and for so long, Jem had been that person for Mykayla. He was the first and only person that she had given her heart to, and there were moments when she really hated how she had had to take it back. Jem was such a kind, caring man, and he was still so insanely important to her. She knew she was both glad and grateful to still have him as a close friend, and was still so much a part of his life that they could sit here and talk about his new girlfriend and chat about their family and friends so easily. She knew that he could have easily turned his back on her after she had broken his heart and wanted nothing more to do with her, but Mykayla and Jem were just two people that you couldn’t tear apart that easily, and she knew that if she ever needed him that he was going to be right there for her just like he had always been.
That’s what made lying to him so difficult. She kept a smile on her face as she did it, though, determined to make it through this moment without giving him any reason to question her. She even managed to smile a little more brightly when he said that she had just made his morning a little more fun before taking another sip of her hot chocolate, though she wasn’t entirely sure how this well it was sitting on her stomach. She put her cup down, deciding not to push it. Mykayla had suggested that they do something whenever Jem was available, but she had had no idea that he was going to be free right then. Of course she was thrilled to hear this, and she jumped on the opportunity. “Sure! Sounds like fun.” And she absolutely meant it. Mykayla was probably one of the few people that could think the chore of grocery shopping was fun, or be so entirely enthusiastic about it, but she was that kind of girl, and even if she really would rather go home and lay down, she was doing this to spend time with her friend. They finished off their drinks (well, Jem did as Kay pretended to sip on hers) and then headed off in the direction of the local grocery store. It was easily a de ja vu moment, so close to what they had had before but not quite. Kay snatched up his list of things that he needed and then went about helping him find it all. She remembered all of his favorite brands knew what he liked and added a few extra things to the cart that she knew he probably needed but hadn’t thought of. She had definitely had fun with it, watching him push the cart around as she went about his shopping for him.
Mykayla also accompanied Jem to his house and helped him put all of his newly purchased groceries away, remembering where things went and not having to be told as they continued their usual banter. A few more of those lies had to be told along the way, and it was really starting to bother Mykayla. Jem was someone that mattered a lot to her, and on some level she felt closer to him in their friendship than she did with a lot of her other friends. She was sitting on his couch a little later, them having decided to take a breather and maybe watch a little something on the TV before he took her back to her car, thinking about this whole mess. Maybe it would be good to have someone else that knew. She hated to worry him, hated to burden him, but she didn’t know how much longer that she could lie to him either. Jem came in with a glass of water for her, her smiling and thanking him as she took a sip and then carefully sat it down on the coffee table. He might have started saying something, Kay didn’t know for sure. She was so lost in that thought, and then she suddenly just went for it. “So… I have something to tell you, Jem, and it’s not going to be easy for me to say.” Her bright blue eyes looked and sure enough, those words had caught his attention. “I haven’t told anyone else, but I don’t like lying to you and you deserve to hear it from me.” Lord only knew what the poor boy was thinking, but Kay took a moment and inhaled a shaky breath. She had only said it once before, and even though she was aware of what was going on with her body, it was still scary was hell to admit. “I have cancer, Jem, and right now the doctors say it could go either way.” She gave a shrug with her shoulders, her voice cracking and her eyes starting to glisten. “And I’m so sorry that I have to tell you and make this a burden, but I hate lying.”
