Kaler thought that the worst part of this entire situation was that fact that no matter if he had moved on, and if Evan figured how to do that herself, they were never going to be out of each other’s lives. They lived in the same small town, had a lot of the same friends and saw each other frequently. There would always be reminders there, things that would be impossible to completely ignore when they were always in such close proximity to each other. But, even if Kaler had stayed in Texas after his mother’s funeral and taken over her ranch instead of running back to the East coast to stay with Evan, things would remain the same. Kaler had always made sure to make time to call this girl while he had been away, just to chat and catch up and see how her life was going. He would have always done that, always had a little piece of him that yearned for the days before their life together had gotten so complicated that they would have cracked and caved beneath the pressure of it all. Kaler would never say as much, but that same little piece of him would always be in love with his high school sweetheart and the future that had been ripped right out of their fingers. It made this whole thing of moving on harder on them, because they both knew that if that old fire could get sparked again, there would be no stopping it.
Evan moved, letting her tiny arms wrap around him and pulling her body in against his. Kaler also brought his arms up around her, a sigh slowly passing through his lips. He didn’t like to see Evan so sad and broken, but he supposed that he knew how to handle her like this much better than he knew how to handle the mean, angry Evan she had been just moments before. Comforting her was much easier. He listened to what she said, and heard her question along with her promise. Evan placed one more sweet kiss on his lips, and Kaler knew that this was what she really needed to hear. “Yeah, Ev, I’m happy. More happy than I have been in a very long time.” Vidette was just that girl for him, the one that made him smile just by being there, the girl that he couldn’t go a whole day without, and the girl that was making him turn his life around, making him want to be the kind of guy that deserved someone like her. If Evan could understand that, then she would see that their past was indeed in the past and that there was no hope of rekindling that. “But you’ll find a way to be happy. I have no doubt about it.” Even if it had to be with that prick Noah Whitmore, Kaler knew that Evan would find a guy that lit her world on fire the way Vidette did with his. It would happen, and she would be able to stop letting Kaler stand in her way.
