Kaler Scott and Britt Hale’s friendship had come in that round-a-bout kind of way, this being something that Kaler had never really expected when he had first met the blonde a little over two years ago. When Kaler had arrived in Arietta, he had been greeted with so much kindness and acceptance that it had seemed unreal. Kaler had been welcomed with open arms by his old friend and high school sweetheart, Evangeline Matthews. He hadn’t called, hadn’t given her any warning, but the blonde beauty had had not qualms about letting him take up a residence in her home, and that was where Kaler had lived for close to half a year before deciding to make Arietta his permanent residence and found a house of his own. But, if there was one family that had adopted Kaler and made him feel like one of their own, it was the Trents. Kaler had never met two nicer people than Rob and Marion Trent, two respected people about town, and the owners of the Trent Bed and Breakfast. Kaler had made friends with Jared Trent, and later found himself friends with Kade and Hunter Trent as well. Along with Jem Hale, Kaler felt like he had four brothers among them, people that he could tolerate, people that he genuinely liked, and people that he could count on. Of course there were Mykayla Trent and Amy Orsino, the two Trent sisters that Kaler found himself bonding with as well (and in more ways than one in one particular case) but those weren’t all the people that Kaler now found himself in close proximity with by being in with the Trents. Miranda James was also a part of it, and then there was Brittany Hale.
She was Jem’s sister, and at the time she was very much attached to Kade. She had seemed like a sweet girl, easily likeable, and as pretty as they came. Kaler had gotten the sense that she liked him well enough, but maybe she was little wary of him, as most women like her were. So, they were the kind of friends that were sociable, the kind that could hang out with each other and not want to strangle one another, but mostly because of their mutual friends. It wasn’t until after Britt had found out that she was pregnant and Kade had left her that things had started to shift. Of course, Hunter Trent had stepped up to the plate as Britt’s savior, the rest of them waiting in the wings and there whenever the girl would let them be there for her. However, the accident had shifted things even more, changing them in ways that no one had seen coming. Britt had lost her younger brother, along with her and Kade’s unborn child. She pushed Hunter away, essentially breaking the youngest Trent brother’s heart into a million little pieces. Try as he might, Britt wouldn’t allow him to be there for her anymore, her heart having grown cold and callus. Hunter was a good guy, one of the best that Kaler had ever known, but he could only take so much. And Jared, well, Jared was the kind of guy that avoided confrontation and even though he cared about Britt, he hadn’t known how to handle her. This was where Kaler had stepped in. It wasn’t like he had ever lost as much as she had, but in a sense he could understand, and he certainly wasn’t afraid of her and her nasty little temper. Mostly, he was just the one that was stubborn enough to stick around, and it paid off in the end.
He didn’t know how he had managed to get through to her, or to make her his friend after all of that, but he had. What he really didn’t understand was the transformation Britt had made, going from that sweet little thing he had known in the beginning to this young woman that was so careless with her body. But, Kaler hadn’t been able to turn her down, and their friendship came to include those benefits that were all too familiar to Kaler. That had been them for almost a year now, the benefits part coming and going but the friendship part always in tact. Kaler kept tabs on Britt, watched out for her and was there to call her on her shit when she was completely out of line. That’s what he had been trying to do earlier that day when he had walked into Rifter’s and seen her making some kind of scene with Kade. Kaler had simply approached her and tried to talk her out of it, tried to make things better for both her and his old friend, even though Kade did deserve everything he got from Britt. However, she was having none of his help and had shoved him away, Kaler having to really put a lot of effort into walking away from this one without her tossed up over his shoulder. In the end, he had just turned and walked away, leaving the restaurant entirely without lunch and going back to his house. Britt had called him later, offering an apology which Kaler knew that he had been lucky to get in the first place. But, then one thing had led to another, and Kaler had once again been getting into his car and driving out to go meet a woman that was obviously not his girlfriend.
When he had arrived at her house, things had played out exactly how they had wanted them to. There was little talking, and what was said was very typical for them in these situations. Britt was able to bring out a different side in him, his words falling sweetly on her ears as they played and flirted around before they finally got down to business, lips colliding harshly and lust driving them as she did what she had termed “refreshing his memory.” Like he had needed it, but Kaler had gone along just like he knew that he shouldn’t have, but unable to help it, unable to find the strength within himself to turn her down. She really was good at taking his mind far, far away from here, his sexual desires met and then some with the blonde as they each worked out their frustrations with each other, ending with nothing but that pleasantly satisfied feeling coursing through them as they lay there together in Britt’s bed. One arm was behind his head, the other rested across his chest as he absently gazed up at the ceiling, his mind wondering here and there before he looked over at Britt. “We make a horrible pair, you know that?” he questioned, the slightest of grins appearing on his face. “We do nothing but enable each other. It’s kinda sick and twisted.” What he said was very true, but Kaler said it as though there were something humorous about it with his natural sarcastic undertones, that grin growing on his lips as he watched Britt’s reaction.

cause just one night couldn't be so wrong ,
Britt hung up her phone, a grin playing on her lips as she did so. When she had first made that call, it had been because she had felt bad for what she had done to him earlier that day. She had never intended on convincing him to come over, though when their conversation had taken that turn she wasn’t one to object. It had been easy to convince him, though. Earlier that day, though, she had ran into the one person she had hoped she would never see again. Kade Trent was a big part of Brittany Hale’s past, and when she had seen him her rational thought had been gone completely. And in that moment she had turned on Kaler and done something awful. Britt wasn’t much for handing out apologies these days, but she had felt absolutely awful for what she had done to Kaler. He was her best friend these days, mostly because she couldn’t seem to get rid of him. A part of her was glad for that, though. There were times when Britt didn’t know what she would do without him. Like right now. Until Kaler had brought up the whole thing, Britt hadn’t realized how much a little casual sex was exactly what she needed after the kind of day she had just had. And that sex just happening to be with Kaler? That was just a plus for sure. So now having something good to look forward to, Britt got up form where she sat and prepared for Kaler’s arrival. She knew she wouldn’t be waiting long, so she hurried about with what she was going to do.
Britt could feel herself slipping into a much better mood with the thought that Kaler was coming and of what they would be doing. Kaler and Britt’s relationship hadn’t always been like this. Once upon a time they had been nothing more than just friends. Britt had been with Kade at the time that Kaler had rolled into town, and when he and Kade had become friends, Britt and Kaler had as well. She had liked Kaler, thinking he was a lot of fun and never finding a dull moment to be had when he happened to be around. If someone had told her then that she would be doing this with Kaler now, Britt would have said you were on crack and walked away. Because back then, she had been with Kade, all thoughts set in the future that the two of them would have together. She had never thought that they would end, and especially not the way that they had. All she had been able to see were them together for the rest of their lives, everything feeling so perfect. Not only that, but Britt had never been one to sleep around with people. Kade had been her first, and they had waited quite a while before going about that. So the thought that she would one day be waiting for Kaler Scott to come over for a little moment of fun? That was just hard for her to believe. But here they were, and it was something that Britt had just accepted. It wasn’t like she was careless with her body. Most of the time she was with a guy, it was someone she knew. She didn’t go around picking up strange men that might do bad things to her. At the same time, though, Britt was being reckless, and there was always a chance that something bad would happen as she didn’t know a lot of those guys as well as she knew Kaler. This was how things were now, though, and Britt honestly didn’t give a damn what anyone thought about it.
Besides, she actually liked having these moments with Kaler. He was good to her, as hard as that might be to believe, and he always aimed to please. It was nice that she could have those moments to forget herself and to concentrate on them and what they did. It was a great stress relief, a great way to take mind away from things. And a girl like Britt had a lot of things in her life that she would like to forget. She was flunking out of school, her mother threatening to not pay for another semester unless she got her grades up, not that she really cared al that much. She still saw images from the accident that had claimed the life of her brother, even though it had happened more than a year ago. And now she had all this stuff with Kade, and every pent up feeling coming to the surface. Which was the main focus of everything today, as what had happened in Rifter’s was still very fresh in her mind. Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait long for Kaler to come and save her from herself. He was there in no time at all, and it wasn’t long before they were down to business and doing what they did best together. She was driven by lust and a need to not think, and none supported both those things better than Kaler. When it was over, Britt felt much better, and she was quite satisfied with the results of their moment. “We make a horrible pair, you know that?” Britt turned her head to look at him, catching the grin that crossed his face and feeling one pull at her own lips. “We do nothing but enable each other. It’s kinda sick and twisted.” She laughed, and turned on her side, looking down at him. “You make it sound like such a bad thing,” she laughed again, the grin staying on her lips. She leaned down and placed a few small kisses on his lips, then attempted to cuddle in next to him, which Kaler was having no part of. “No. That’s not going to happen,” he said, pushing her away. Britt’s grin faded from her lips and her eyes narrowed. “Yes it is.” He argued with her. “God damn it, Kaler Scott! I gave you sex! Now you are going to cuddle with me, and you are going to like it!” She was completely serious, too, and she would make it happen. Because that was the way Britt was, and it was what she wanted.

No matter how great and enjoyable and fantastic (and any other awesome adjective you wish to insert here) they were together, that afternoon or anytime before, there was absolute truth in what Kaler had just said to Britt. Neither of them were able to deny it, though neither of them ever really tried to. Kaler had always had a reputation, it seeming to follow him into town and rush full speed ahead of him not too long after his arrival, making everyone aware of the fact that he was just that guy that parents were terrified of their daughters falling for. There had been no way of him to deny that, but it wasn't something that he was ashamed of or had been wanting to change. Kaler was a manwhore, plain and simple. He had a game that he liked to play, and he played it so well that it was down right scary sometimes. Britt, well, Britt Hale never used to have the kind of reputation that she did now, but people knew what her game was too. She had changed completely after her devastating losses, finding a way to escape the pain and not thinking about it for a little while, at least. It was like her distraction from life, her way of blowing off steam and just letting go of it all for the time that she got with Kaler and her other "friends" that had shared her bed. Kaler understood that process maybe a little too well, knew what it could feel like to be trapped in your own skin and needing just that little bit of physical release every now and then to make it seem better, even if that feeling didn't last for long.
Kaler as her enabler for that, the one guy that she had been able to continuously count on for that kind of need whenever she should so call upon him to fulfill it. And Britt was only just enabling Kaler to continue on in manwhore ways even when he was supposedly in a committed relationship with a girl he actually did care about very much. He just couldn't seem to stop cheating on her, this afternoon's phone call with Britt and the results of that same phone call proof of that. Kaler knew how wrong it was, and Britt also knew that he was in a relationship with another woman yet she had gladly let him come over and enjoy everything that she had to offer him. She had done him no favor in the way of telling him no, or calling him a prick and telling him to go fuck himself for being such a terrible human being. And, in return, Kaler had let her use him to work out the frustration, to block out the pain and as a perfect distraction from all the stress and drama that today had brought down upon her. Their intentions had been good, for sure. Kaler had started out helping Britt, trying to get her through the tough time that she was dealing with and hadn't known how to turn down those pretty blue eyes of hers when she was looking up at him and saying please. And Britt, well, Britt was just giving Kaler what she knew he wanted, what she knew was the truth. In their own sick and twisted kind of way, they were just doing what they had thought was right by each other. But that saying does go that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and there was also truth in Kaler's second comment. No getting around that one, either.
However, Britt didn't seem to have any issue with it. A grin formed on her lips as well as he spoke, and she turned over on her side so that she could better see him. "You make that sound like such a bad thing." He really loved how she could laugh as she said that, and saw that they really were too much alike in their way of thinking anymore for this to be a real issue. Kaler thorough enjoyed the few small kisses that she let fall onto his own lips, something about this girl that made him crave more but not pushing for it again so soon. He knew Britt, and he could have called what she was going to attempt next. After she had kissed him, she tried to worm her way up next to him, tried to snuggle in close and do some post-sex cuddling. Kaler was not a huge fan of cuddling, especially since the last woman he had allowed to have that kind of intimacy with him had been the one he had fallen for and also the one that wanted nothing to do with with him now. Izzy, his girlfriend, got to cuddle with him now only because she was the girlfriend, and therefore had earned the right. Also, she was his close friend and it would have seemed very odd to deny her that kind of thing. Evan, another one of the wonderful leading ladies in Kaler's life right now, also snuggled in right there against his side, having gained that right a long time ago when things had been very different, Kaler himself included. Then there had been Vidette, but that was a longer story that Kaler was even trying to forget. Britt moved in closer, and Kaler scooted himself away, using one hand to keep her at a distance. "No. That's not going to happen." The moment he said that, though, he saw Britt's face change like an angry storm cloud rushing in.
"God damn it, Kaler Scott! I gave you sex! Now you are going to cuddle with me, and you are going to like it!" Kaler would have to say that that was a first. Never had he had a woman threaten him because he wasn't going to cuddle with her. Some had shot him hurt looks, but most women that Kaler got with knew the drill and didn't even attempt it. There was a part of him that wanted to bust out laughing into a hysterical kind of laughing, the kind that would make tears pour from his eyes because it was just that funny to see her face so serious, yet to hear what she was actually pissed about. The other part of Kaler was too shocked to laugh like that at her because it was honestly the last thing that he had expected out of his friend. He guessed that he should have known better than to push her after how angry she had been earlier that day, but really, just because he wasn't going to cuddle with her? "Fine," he said stubbornly, moving back to where he had been and moving his arm so that she could curl up right there against his side. "But I'm not going to like it." His lips twitched with an amused smile as he said it, unable to keep a completely straight face as the blonde haired girl took her place and cuddled up with him. Kaler let his arm wrap around her and sighed as though he were in complete disgust, looking down at her with his icy blue eyes playfully narrowed. Then he lost the look and he had to laugh, letting his hand rub up and down along her arm a few times. "I really don't know how I go someone like you, when I clearly don't deserve you, or any good people at all." He said it still with a smile on his lips, still half laughing but also meaning what he said, feeling what he said deep down to the core.

cause just one night couldn't be so wrong ,
Kaler seemed surprised at her reaction to his denying to cuddle with her. But honestly, he really shouldn’t have been. It was a trait Britt had, and though they hadn’t yet done such a thing, it was something he should have been aware of and expected at some point. Britt was loving that way, or at least she had been once. Was it so wrong that she wanted to feel close to him like that? That she wanted to just feel a little something in a situation that was otherwise meaningless? She just wanted to cuddle with him! How was that such a horrible thing. So Kaler pushed her away and she yelled at him. Whatever thoughts ran through his head after that, though, it seemed that the final decision moved in her favor. "Fine." He resituated himself so that Britt would be able to take her place up beside him. "But I'm not going to like it." Britt felt the grin return to her face, and she quickly took her spot next to him, loving how his arm wrapped around her. She completely ignored his sigh of disgust, though, because she knew he was going to like it. “That’s what you think,” she said with a laugh. Britt and Kaler were just weird like this, though. Twisted, as he had said. They were so different, and yet so similar, and it was really quite terrifying to think about. No one wanted to think like Kaler Scott, that was for sure. But no matter how immoral his thought process might be, it seemed to always work out good for her, so she really couldn’t complain.
Britt knew she should feel guilty about this. There should be some part of her that should feel bad about what she had just done. But honestly, she didn’t. She didn’t feel any guilt about the fact that she had just slept with someone else’s boyfriend. She knew that the version of herself from a year ago would have been absolutely disgusted with herself. This wasn’t the kind of thing that she had ever made a habit of doing. She was never one to have casual sex. In fact, before Kade had gotten a hold of her she had been a virgin. But now she couldn’t even remember being that way. She couldn’t remember the innocence she had once had, and how sheltered she had been. How naive. She had once thought she and Kade Trent would be together forever, and that things would just somehow work themselves out. But that wasn’t the case. They weren’t like that, and she and Kade would never have anything close to a fairytale ending. Instead, she laid here with her best friend, engaging in highly questionable activities. This was hat her life had become. "I really don't know how I got someone like you, when I clearly don't deserve you, or any good people at all." She glanced up at him, her blue eyes looking at him, trying to tell if he was genuinely serious about what he said or just making fun. “Well I don’t deserve good people either, so I guess you and I are in the same boat.” She did feel that way, too. She had been abandoned by the one man she had truly loved with all her heart, and that wasn’t something that you just got over. She still hadn’t come to terms with it. After losing her brother and her baby, Britt’s self-esteem and worth had just sank, her feeling like she was nothing and not worth loving at that. It was a part of why she had pushed Hunter away when she did. She didn’t feel like she was good enough for him. “All I do is hurt people, Kaler,” she said softly, looking away and returning her head to his shoulder where it had laid before. “And I think you underestimate yourself. You deserve anything you want.” She glanced up at him again. “You’re a good friend. To me at least,” she added with a small laugh. There was nothing in their past that could make her say that Kaler had ever been bad to her. He had stood by her despite how hard she had tried to push him away. He was still here, and that really meant a lot to the young girl, even if she didn’t say as much.

Not a lot of people that had ever met Kaler Scott would ever dream that the boy had a low sense of self worth. From the moment you met him, you were simply captivated by those intense blue eyes and the way those charming words fell from his lips. When he walked into a room, he seemed to just demand your attention, and behaved so arrogantly that it was hard to believe that there was actually a good hearted person in beneath that outward conceitedness. He was a young man that had a rough start to life, but had ended up in a family that had provided him with a rather large trust fund and made sure that he never wanted for anything ever again. He had become the prodigy, following in William Scott's footsteps and going to Yale University, being a smart young man that literally had the world at his fingertips. Anything that he wanted, he could have. There was not one thing that was out of his reach, and although he had certain ways about him that made him come off as cold and sometimes cruel yet at the same time mysteriously inviting, he knew that there were people in this world that loved him. There was no good reason for anyone to look at him and think that he was a guy that thought so incredibly little of himself, but that was how it went with Kaler. He had been that way since he was young, never fully thinking that he deserved what he had, and it had carried through into his adult life which he seemed to be running into the ground.
He knew that he absolutely deserved Izzy to find out about this, and for her to write him out of her life completely. She was one of his best friends he had ever had, one of the most amazing women that he had had the pleasure of meeting, and yet he could screw her over like this. He had earned all the bad consequences of his actions, but he had not done anything good to deserve her forgiveness or to even expect it if she did find out about this. He hadn't deserved her as a friend, let alone a girlfriend that had put that kind of faith and trust in him. Kaler believed, without a doubt, that he didn't deserve the good kind of friend that Britt was to him, and had meant what he had just said to her no matter how light and joking his words had sounded. Why would he deserve good people, or good things for that matter? All he as going to do in the end was fuck it up and dislike himself for doing it even more than he already did. "Well I don't deserve good people either, so I guess you and I are in the same boat." Kaler glanced down at Britt, the smile slowly fading from his lips. It was one thing for him to think that way, but for Britt? "Sweetheart, you're in a different boat entirely. What makes you think you're anything like me?" Because honestly, she wasn't nearly as far gone in that area as Kaler was. She had done some things that weren't greatly smiled upon, but he was very sure that she had never stooped to his kind of low.
"All I do is hurt people, Kaler." He didn't believe that for a minute, but she didn't give him time to say anything about it. "And I think you underestimate yourself. You deserve anything you want. You're a good friend. To me at least." They both had a small laugh at that one, Kaler letting a hint of a smile onto his face as he did. "Yeah, to you. I don't know what it is about you, though, because I am definitely failing at being a good friend to Izzy." Really, some best friend he had turned out to be. That was what got Kaler the most out of all of this. It bothered him more that he was betraying Izzy as his best friend than he was as his girlfriend. "And you...you don't know how wrong you are about yourself." She would probably turn around and tell him the same thing, but Kaler could look at Britt and still see that sweet, wonderful girl he knew that she still was. She had hurt someone, but she had been hurt first; at least she had reason to lash out and sink her claws into someone. There was no good reason for what Kaler was doing, but then again, that had never stopped him before. A sigh passed through his lips, not really knowing what else to say but at the same time feeling that nothing else was truly necessary.
