Isobel Caulfield was really the last thing that Kaler had ever been expecting to happen in his life. Sure, he was very used to women coming into the bar and hitting on him, flirting in an attempt to earn free drinks and handing out their phone numbers without an ounce of hesitation. That was the kind of treatment that Kaler had been receiving for a long time and he thrived on that kind of thing. That first night when he had laid eyes on Izzy at the bar had been nothing out of the ordinary. Anyone with eyes could see that she was hot as hell, and he was fairly certain that most people that had been around and paying attention would have picked up on the sexual tension that had almost immediately sparked between them. That wasn’t anything unusual either. People in Arietta knew that he had a reputation, knew that he wasn’t the kind of guy that stayed with women for any kind of relationship and didn’t seem to have an ounce of moral in his head. Kaler taking Izzy up on her offer to go over that evening had ended the way both of them had known it would, had wanted it to. Kaler’s “relationships” were all about sex and his ability to manipulate and connive, and never had anything to do with feelings or Kaler giving a flying fuck about these women in general. Friends with benefits were alright, but rare as Kaler didn’t even try to get involved in these girls’ lives apart from having sex with them. Izzy was one of the few that weaseled her way in that far.
The friendship that formed between them was surprising, and as hesitant as Kaler had been to trust Izzy with that kind of bond between them, he now couldn’t imagine not having her around. She was that kind of girl that every guy wished to find. She drank and played video games, had a game room set up in her basement, and could hang with the guys easily. Then she could turn around and be this insanely gorgeous, sexy woman that was ready and willing to fulfill every desire you had. And, as it turned out, Kaler found that she was actually easy to talk to and get along with. Izzy was an interesting human being that Kaler Scott had dubbed worth the time to actually get to know, and she had become one of his closest friends in a very short amount of time. He still didn’t know how the fuck that had happened, as he was usually not the type to allow such instant relationships in his life, but there was something about her that hadn’t let it be any other way. However, the most surprising part about this woman that had come prancing into his life only just recently was the fact that he was now in this relationship with her, one that came with all those messy strings that Kaler didn’t like. There was a part of his mind that told him that it didn’t make sense and that they were only fooling themselves if they thought that this was going to get him over those nasty little things called feelings that he had stupidly let himself develop for another woman, or if being with him was going to benefit Izzy any in the area of getting her over what she called commitment issues.
Yet, here they were. Almost three weeks in and she had just pulled a prank big enough that it could have potentially ruined everything if Kaler didn’t have a sense of humor and that little soft spot for the girl. He knew that his response to that prank was only just another challenge, almost like a game to the both of them as they were now going to get to see who could hold out the longest. Kaler still stood by what he had said; he was not going to have sex with Izzy that night even if it killed him. He was a stubborn young man that was known for sticking to his word no matter what, and Izzy was just going to have to deal with that and accept that she had only brought this punishment on herself. He knew that it would drive her crazy, and that the mere thought of him telling her no was just going to be unacceptable in his mind, but that was what made it so great for Kaler. He knew that she was going to be climbing the walls and pulling out all her best tricks to try to get him to cave, and it would be fun to watch her squirm. You know, for the most part. He knew that she would probably get some of that same satisfaction in the way that she would know that Kaler wanted to have sex with her but because of his own stupid rule for the night, he couldn’t. There was a very interesting dynamic between the two of them, the way the knew how to play each other, but it was what made Kaler and Izzy, Kaler and Izzy.
“Well, would Noah look more like me, or would he look more like you? Because I think if he looked like you, well he would have all the girls.” Under different circumstances, Kaler might have let himself get sucked into that conversation. After all, they were all laid back and cuddled up in his bed, her voice all soft and sweet and enough to lull him into that kind of place where it was okay to talk about a fictional son and a family that they would most likely never have together. Really, the kid would most likely look like both of them. They both had dark hair and stunning blue eyes, and unless some odd genetic thing worked out, he would look just like them. It would be an interesting mix, but not something that Kaler wanted to see anytime soon, if ever. He cared for Izzy so much, but the very thought of them reproducing and being responsible for a human life other than their own was just crazy. That much said, Kaler knew better than to get pulled into this conversation, this trap she was laying for him. He knew that she was still trying to have sex with him, and she didn’t even try to deny it. “Yes…are you still turning me down?” The glare she wore was enough to tell him that she wasn’t happy with him, but Kaler only smirked back. Let her glare at him all night. It wasn’t going to change a damn thing. “Yep. Definitely still turning you down.” He smiled one of those sarcastic smiles at her, looking down to meet that glare again. Kaler had known that this would be a long night, but he was very sure that his response had just pushed her to a new level of determination.

If there was one thing in Isobel Caulfield's life that she had never excepted to happen was to find herself attached to someone like she had attached to Kaler. Something about the whole thing was still a little strange, but now that's she had actually found herself friends with him it was easy. They were such friends, and the fact that it had happened instantaneously was what made her question things. But when she let her mind wander she was able to realize that this was as easy as breathing. If Kaler Scott had not wandered into her life things would be very very different than they were now. She would have never actually found herself in a relationship with anyone, and she would have never gotten herself so wormed into a world that she did not know.
Izzy had never been in any kind of relationship before, and maybe that was partially her fault or maybe it was the fact that she had no desire to get attached and feel something for someone. After her mother died, it was a totally different story, and it was hard on her even to think of her commitment issues. Hell Izzy had basically no friends that stuck with her through anything. She pushed people away like it was her job, so it was no wonder she had pulled a stunt like this to see what Kaler's reaction was going to be. Then again she had managed to squirm her way into his life and that was how she liked it. Now that they had been together for almost a month it was hard to imagine life any other way. A relationship may not be as awful as she thought it had been, but it was Iz. If it was someone else but the boy she was currently snuggled up against well it would be a whole other issue. She would have never stayed loyal and would have been a cheating fool. It was a way for her to cope with everything, but Kaler had worked his way into her life too.
Now she had been purposed to have a night of wanting and retaliation. She had gotten Kaler so good with her little prank but he was so terrible at retaliation. He was telling her that there was no way in hell he was sleeping with her that evening. It wa making Isobel a very cranky girl because even though they were a couple the two of them were yet to have a night that did not involve the carnal passion that was hot steamy sex. So though she had bit her tongue all evening and just did whatever, she was cuddled up in bed with him and Dani. She knew what she wanted and Isobel Caulfield was a girl that did not back down from a challenge. She was going to. Get what she wanted from her boyfriend if it killed her. See the funny thing about the two of them was that they knew how to press buttons. She knew how to get him going and he always knew the best ways to deny her. He knew this was going to drive her cray, so it was not going to be an easy task of getting him to break his rule.
That is what made Izzy concoct the plan that she did. She had decided to push her luck and bring up the fictional baby that they would never have. Izzy knew that it was a long shot to actually get what she wanted. She also knew that if she brought up Noah he was going to lull back and talk to her about him. So if they were talking about how gorgeous their baby would look he would forget all about the fact that she had pulled a huge prank on him and the whole mess would end up in her getting her way. Kaler was stubborn, but it was Izzy that we were talking about. She wanted Kaler and he was going to give in to her. So after her plan was slowly set in motion, she could feel Kaler's head move to look at her. He had totally caught her in her trap and there was no use denying it. Hell maybe if she was honest that was going to get her what she wanted.
The saddest part about everything was that she really did not care about having sex with him it was just a perk that was what the reality of the two of them. She cared about Kaler in a way that she had never cared for a human being before. She had learned that Kaler was just someone that she could not imagine her life without. He had created a Kaler size hole in her heart that only he could fill. So maybe that was the reason that she wanted this so much. Maybe that is why she had asked him to try this boyfriend thing out with her. It was just because it was Kaler. She snuggled up next to him as he looked down at her shocked that she was still trying. She was glaring at him as she answered his question truthfully. And then he was just nonchalant about turning her down. Izzy was not happy about it, but in that moment Dani moved from both of their feet to just Izzy's. It had been an ongoing joke between the two of them that Kaler's dog loved her more.
So after being turned down by her boyfriend, whom she happened to know wanted to sleep with her, his dog managed to make her point. Dani adored Izzy and that was just a fact. Izzy laughed lightly as she let her hand wander from Kaler to Dani's head. She looked at her evil boyfriend and glared at him some more before speaking. "Well, Dani likes me better. And you should stop turning me down Kaler Scott. Because you have no idea what you are getting yourself into."
she still wore her glare but now she was beginning to change so much of her plan that she just wanted to prove her point. She could get him to have sex with her, and she was going to do it. [/blockquote] _________________________ kaler // mercy <3

Most had been surprised to hear that Kaler had actually agreed to be in a relationship with Izzy. Some of his closest friends had only just looked at him when he had let the news spill from his lips, them surely expecting him to say some kind of crude remark that would write it off as a joke or something else that would let them know that this wasn’t a real thing that was actually happening. Because really, it was Kaler Scott that they were talking about. From the moment that he had rolled into this little town, people had known that he wasn’t the kind of guy that would take a relationship seriously. He came off as arrogant and self serving, heavily guarded and overly sarcastic at times. After awhile, it became known that he wasn’t looking for anything more in a woman that just a piece of ass that he could hit and quit with no strings attached. Most people that you asked would be in agreement that Kaler was that boy that grew up in a fast paced kind of life and a young man that had no intentions of changing that just yet. He was young and having fun, and if that meant having it at others’ expense, then so be it. Some looked down on him for his lifestyle, others hailed him as a hero among men because of how he was able to score so effortlessly. Others simply didn’t care what the hell he did; they were able to see passed all the bravado and fronts to the good guy he was beneath it all. Granted, there were not a lot of those people around, but there were a couple and even they had been surprised to see Kaler in a relationship with Isobel Caulfield, a young woman that seemed to be playing the same game that he was, one that had no rules and no long term commitment involved.
Kaler wasn’t going to lie; he was just as surprised as the rest of those poor bastards had been. He certainly hadn’t seen himself in a real, honest to God relationship like this, and not with someone like Izzy. They seemed ill fated from the start just because neither of them were good at this kind of thing, and it was also so, so obvious that Kaler’s whole heart wasn’t there with her. But, he and Izzy were trying to make this damned relationship work. They were trying to be there for each other, to be what two people were supposed to be when they gave themselves to each other fully. Kaler wanted to roll his blue eyes at the very idea of it, knowing that this thing that they were desperately trying to make work wasn’t going to hold together like they would want it to, but he didn’t say a word. Having Izzy in his life was more than he could have possibly asked for at this point, when he really needed a friend that would be there and kind of look after him. Kaler hated to admit that he needed those kinds of people, but no one could make it through this life all alone, not even someone as stubborn as Kaler Scott. So he had Izzy, his best friend and a woman that was turning out to be a wonderful girlfriend despite her little pranks that had nearly pushed Kaler over the fucking edge. So, Kaler was treating her like a girlfriend that needed to see her man put his foot down for once and not give into her every little demand, especially after something like that. He just…wished that she wasn’t so damn sexy. Even as she shot those death glares his way, he couldn’t help but to be attracted to her and feel that want for her building up inside of him. He had put himself up to damn near impossible task in both this relationship, and in holding to this one thing he said he would not let her do tonight.
There was the realization that if they did not have sex that night, it would be the first night that they had spent together that it wouldn’t happen. Kaler didn’t know if that was really all that typical or if that was just their fuck buddy nature pulling through, but either way that was the reality of what they were doing. Despite how that might look, Kaler did genuinely care for this girl that was currently snuggled up against his side and trying to seduce him. If there came a night between them that didn’t end up in some hot and heavy situation, he didn’t think that he would even care. Having her there was enough, though that was way beyond the level of emotional honesty that Kaler was comfortable with at this point. He cared for Izzy deeply, and he shared things with her that were difficult for him to share with others, but he wasn’t up for that kind of sharing just yet. Instead, he just watched her as she glared up at him. The movement of the dog at the foot of the bed distracted Kaler for just a moment, his blue eyes drifting down to watch Dani as she scooted off of his feet and to where she was only lying over Izzy’s feet. At that he did roll his eyes. It was just so typical. Izzy reached down and stroked the dog’s head before shooting another glare his way. “Well, Dani likes me better.” Of course she did. Everyone always told Kaler that his Australian Shepherd loved them more than she loved him. It seemed to be an ongoing joke, and Kaler could only shake his head. “Oh, I’m pretty sure I know what I’m getting into. I don’t care.” Even if he was getting in way over his head and they both knew it. Let Izzy push his buttons; he would figure out a way to stay strong.
“And that’s fine if Dani likes you better. I’m still not sleeping with you.” There was another smirk on his lips as he said it. As if having the dog on her side was any justification as to why he would change his mind and have sex with her after putting up such a fight. But Kaler was right when he had thought he had been able to push Izzy to a new level of determination, and he saw it shine through in her bright blue eyes as she told him that he wanted to do it. Hell, it wouldn’t have taken a genius to figure that much out. She was a beautiful, sexy young woman in his bed and offering herself up to him; of course Kaler wanted to have sex with her. That didn’t mean that he was going to go back on his word just like that. “Sure I want to, Iz, but what if you get pregnant, hm?” The grin on his face was of pure amusement as he used her sick little prank against her now. He turned, rolling over on his side to where he wasn’t even facing her at all, still grinning to himself. Kaler didn’t know how the hell this situation they were in, with the relationship and this whole thing, even existed but for amusement’s sake, he was glad that it did because this was pretty great.

Isobel knew that htings were never going to work out between herself and Kaler, no matter how hard or how much she wanted it. It was a simple illogical thing. Though here they were a month into this, and there was nothing out of the ordinary. Sure she missed her single ways and flitting from one person to the next, but this was Kaler we were talking about. The man had made things so easy, and it was almost like routine for her to come around him. he was her absolutle bet friend, and the best part was that she knew as soon as shit hit the fan it was going to end with them going back to being friends. Izzy had known this all from the beginning when she had propositioned Kaler the night of his birthday. The main point of even trying this was to see if she could even be a girlfriend and see why it was that she hated these messy strings that went along with it. Part of her had always known why though, but seeing as how Kaler had already cut a giant hole to fill she figured what the hell. It was a risk that she wanted to take, just to figure out about herself. This was what made Isobel Caulfield who she was, and even though it shocked the hell out of her that there had been no cheating on either’s behalf she was glad.
The brunette was glad that they were able to actually commit to this kind of thing and see where it really went. Their friends all looked at them stupidly, and anyone who knew Izzy knew that this was a bad idea. She was not a girl who managed to stay loyal to anyone; she was the girl who never got close and never let someone weasel their way into her life as more than a fuck buddy. She had watched as other messy break-ups happened and she vowed to never be one of them. That was how she operated, but here she was. She lay snuggled up to someone that she could actually see herself wanting to date, and that scared her shitless. Izzy had vowed to never let those messy disasterours strings interfere with what was going on with the two of them, but here she was thinking about this fake baby and what would have happened if they had actually became a family. She knew that Kaler would have stood by her and helped with the baby that much was evident, but a family for the two of them was preposterous. She was hardly the settling down type, and well Kaler was still in love with Vidette. Part of her always knew that, but he had not mentioned her once in the past three weeks. Not even as a lingering little notion. He was really committed to giving this a go, so she should have known that he was going to be his stubborn assed self. Kaler was putting his foot down, and she knew that it was going to be a challenge to get what she wanted.
Kaler had been the kind of person she had needed, he looked past everything and just took Izzy as who she was. It was a nice change of pace rather than being judged for every single little mistake that she had ever made. She was the same way looking past everything that he had done, and that was something she was never going to stop doing. Until the man did something against her, or tried to do something, she would still be there. She did not like how this evening was turning out due to the fact that what the two of them knew about each other was sex. Neither of them had raised this kind of challenge before, but it was something that Izzy was going to win. She could tell that Kaler wanted her; he was trying to act like he did not want to have sex with her, but she knew better. She knew things that would never change between them, and their desire to have sex was one of them. But for once in her life it was not really about the sex. Sure the brunette adored having sex with her boyfriend, but he had managed to snake his way into her life in a way that it did not matter if they had sex every night. She was really okay with just laying there snuggled up against his side. That is one thing that she was not willing to admit just yet to the man with icy blue eyes. She had never really cared about the sex in the relationship, okay that was a lie, but since their fuck buddy status had changed to a relationship well it seemed okay. Though their fuck buddy nature was always present in the fact that they had yet to go a day that did not include them having sex. Whenever Dani had moved to her feet though, she knew that she was going to win. Dani always managed to make her point for her, and it was the ongoing thing that Kaler’s dog loved Izzy more. She had known that, but now that she was snuggled up next to Izzy it made this feel even more like a win.
That was the case until he let words slip from his lips again. He was still trying to hold strong on to the fact that he had put his foot down and said no. This is what made Izzy turn her plan around instead of focusing on Noah and Dani. Instead Isobel knew exactly what to do to make Kaler’s head spin. That was until he shot another stab at her about being pregnant. She now knew that this a jab at the joke that she had just pulled on him, but it still made her glare at him. If he was going to keep denying her for everything every time she did something completely silly and off the wall well it would not be had. She smirked at him before speaking to him. “You know you want to Kaler. So stop fighting me.”
and then he decided to be a smartass in true Kaler fashion. What if she were to really get pregnant from a fiasco tonight? She laughed at the thought, but it was funny. She shot a glare at him before speaking again, “Well if I were to get pregnant it would be your own fault. So don’t fuck it up.” She smiled wickedly at him, knowing that it worked both ways. She couldn’t get pregnant if he was not sleeping with her, and she did not like that idea. Besides they were always careful and she knew there was not a chance in hell she was going to end up being a mommy to Kaler’s children. When Kaler turned away from her, she got the brilliant idea to start kissing his neck and ears. She knew that he was a sucker for it, and it always got him riled up and ready to go. So as she gently planted kisses all along his neck she heard a soft sentence escape from his lips, and it sounded like he said I hate you. She smiled after she placed a few more kisses and nipped at his ear. “I hate you too Kaler, but I don’t think you are turning me down now are you?” In that moment, Izzy knew that she had won. There was no way that he was going to keep this up. Not after she started to work him over. [/blockquote]

Kaler laid there with some satisfaction, a smirk on his lips as he actually let his icy blue eyes close. He was genuinely surprised that he had made it this far, and pleased that he was tormenting the woman that lay at his side. That’s what she got, he thought as he readjusted his body slightly, finding a comfortable position and thinking that he could actually drift off into a nice sleep if Izzy were to keep her lips shut and her hands off of him. Sleeping in his bed was something that he hadn’t done in a long time, having mostly camped out on the couch or over at Izzy’s house recently. This was nice, and it was also nice that Izzy was there for a change even if he were doing all of this just to spite her. She was really trying, really trying to worm her way in there, but all that Kaler could think was that if she could take it, then she shouldn’t have dished it out. She had tried her hand at some small scale seduction techniques, trying to sucker him in with talk of a fictional family that they both knew deep down would never come to be, and then trying to just get him over this silly new rule of his and tell him that he wanted it. Well, no shit there. Kaler and Izzy both knew what they wanted, but just because they wanted it didn’t mean it was going to happen. Kaler let a sigh pass through his lips, and then a grin formed as he recalled what she had last said to him before he had literally turned his back on her here.
If she were to get pregnant, Kaler couldn’t say that it would be the worst thing in the world. It wouldn’t be the greatest, as it would put both of the in a very difficult position. They were clearly not ready to be parents together, and they were ill equipped to handle that kind of a change right now, but Kaler knew that they would adjust and they would make things work. It would bring with it a lot of hindrances, but there were sure to be enough joys with that one child to make what they would give up all seem worth it. Kaler had just liked how she had said that it would have been his fault, and that if he didn’t want her to get pregnant then he should fuck it up. Like it would be entirely his fault. That was a process that took two, and he had only just rolled his eyes at her before rolling over into this very comfortable position that he found himself in now, thinking that he had the upper hand and that he was going to successfully pull this one off. However, Kaler should have known that Izzy wasn’t about to give up that easily; after all, she was a girl that was known for getting whatever it was that she wanted, and this seemed to be a challenge that she was not backing down from. He felt the mattress shift slightly, and Izzy’s body came nearer to his. Kaler kept his eyes shut, mind set on ignoring whatever it was that she was about to do, but when he felt her lips touch his neck he knew that he was screwed. Izzy knew Kaler and what did it for him well, and he was an absolute sucker for this little move that she was pulling. He didn’t know what it was, but the sensitive areas of the neck and ear were just triggers for him, and she wasn’t going easy on them either.
“I hate you,” he said, words coming out muffled because his lips happened to be partially covered by the pillow he had been trying so hard to rest on, but Izzy had heard him easily enough. She did place a few more kisses on his neck, though, and playfully nipped at his ear just to drive him a little more up the wall than she already had before she replied. “I hate you too Kaler, but I don’t think you are turning me down now are you?” Fuck no. How in the hell was he supposed to win this one now? There was no winning it, and Kaler had kind of supposed that much from the beginning but he had put up some very nice effort. He groaned a bit in frustration as he rolled over then, shaking his head at her before grinning and letting his lips meet hers, his body over Izzy’s as this night started to head in what was the very typical direction for these two. Kaler’s efforts had been futile, and while he kind of wished that he had been able to hold out and make his point, giving in had definitely been worth it.

Isobel Caulfield knew that it was easy for her to win at whatever her little heart desired. What stunned her was that Kaler really doubted that she was going to win this little challenge of theirs. She knew to start with the baby steps to test the waters and see how serious he was about the whole thing. That was the thing that she did not just start with her devious most genius plan. Instead she brought up a family that she would never have, and part of her really wondered if it would have been that bad? Sure she was in no stable place to have a child, but it would not have been so bad to have a baby with Kaler. If it was going to be someone it might as well be him, because over the course of this little relationship that they had, she had realized just how much her life would suck if it did not involve Kaler. It did not mean that they had to be in a relationship, because being his friend was enough. She had always known that much, but it was still something she did not like to think about. Izzy was certain that she had won whenever she started to kiss his neck; that was one thing about Izzy that Kaler was bound to hate. She knew everything about how to make him tick and make him do basically whatever she wanted. It was a trick and she loved it so very much. She knew that whenever he turned on his side and tried to get comfortable that was when she was going to attack.
That is exactly what she had done, wait for him to get comfy and then start to attack the sensitive spots of his neck and ear. She nipped at him to get him going, and soon he was saying how much he hated her. She knew it was nothing serious, because part of Isobel knew that Kaler loved her. Neither of them were the kind of people to admit these kinds of feelings, especially Izzy. She knew that Kaler was in love with some girl who had broken his heart. It was a dangerous game she had brought upon herself, and that was something she had not expected to think about as she felt his lips connecting with hers. The last thing that Izzy wanted to think about was if Kaler was really thinking about her, or if he was wishing that she was Vidette. It was not something that she was quite happy with, but her body started to go through the motions of what was happening. She wanted Kaler, that was a given fact, but her brain would not shut off and let her enjoy having sex with her boyfriend. It was the most upsetting thing in her entire life, and she did not want to admit things like this to herself or to another person.
Her success was almost totally unwanted, and part of her really wished that Kaler had been able to hold his ground and not give in to her womanly charm. But it had brought all of these monstrous questions to her mind. She was laying there with her arms behind her head thinking about everything. Izzy was really thinking about these feelings of hers were spinning around in her head. She knew there was more than just friend feelings floating around, but she did not think she was in love with Kaler. She just had this feeling that they were meant to be together; never had she given a thought to soul mates but this is what it felt like. The universe wanted them to be together, and then there was the fact that Kaler was in fact in love with another woman. She had known it from the beginning, but she had never had this problem before. Izzy was the girl that never cared about anything in her life, she could have cared less about Vidette and what she felt for Kaler. The problem was that she cared more about Kaler than she would ever let on, and that is when her fingers slid from behind her head to the tips of her hair. She started to play with the ends, and that is when she knew that Kaler would notice that something was wrong with her. Izzy only ever played with her hair whenever she was upset, but this was going to eat her alive if she didn’t ask him about.
She heard his simple question of what was wrong, and she looked at him. Her blue eyes were filled with sadness, and she could not hide what was going on with her at all. “So when we have sex, are you glad it is with me or do you wish I was Vidette? Because part of me is saying that you would rather be sleeping with her, and that this was a joke from the beginning. I can’t be in a relationship with a man who is in love with another woman. It is just wrong.”
She had wanted to get his mind of of Vidette, but instead the girl who had broken him had wormed into her own thoughts that made her question what was going on in her own mind. It was not something that she was enjoying, and she looked at Kaler hoping that he could say something that would put her at ease, but she knew in her heart that this was not the case. Well, once again Isobel and worked her charms and made Kaler feel like he was wrapped her damn little finger. His efforts had been a waste, because he had known from the start that she wasn’t going to go quietly. Izzy had made him eat his words, and had made him turn around and give her exactly what kind of attention that she had been looking for. He should have known that he wouldn’t be able to deny her anything. Since the moment that they had clicked as best friends, he had always given her what she wanted. Kaler Scott was known to be something of a prick and an asshole, but he had a very kind and generous side to him if you made it onto the list of people that earned that kind of respect from him and Izzy certainly was. He let her pick everything, let her have her way with a lot of things, and could hardly stand to argue back just for the sake of arguing when he looked into those blue eyes of hers. That had a lot to do in why their status had even changed from best friends to being in a relationship. She had asked, and even though Kaler had known that it wouldn’t be a wise thing to do, he had agreed and gone along with her anyway. He hadn’t been able to turn her down or hurt her like that. Strange how now he could turn around and hurt her in a different way entirely… But it was Izzy, and Kaler didn’t know how she had done it but she had made herself a fixture in his life that truly meant something. And, maybe she wasn’t the something that he really wanted, but she was his in a way that made him want to keep her regardless of any other feelings that he may have harbored for someone else.
Really, though, it was just the way that she tasted, the way her skin felt against his own that made her so addicting. He knew how to please this girl, and they didn’t waste time before they got down to it and got what they had both wanted. Kaler thought that he felt a difference in Izzy, though, something small and barely there but at the same time, he knew it was. It seemed like she wasn’t completely into it as she normally was, like her mind was far away from what they were doing but at the same time he knew she wanted it. It lacked some of their normal explosiveness, and it led Kaler’s mind to wonder as well as they both lay there afterward, her body not cuddled up against his like it normally was. He didn’t know what was weighing on her mind so heavily, and it kind of annoyed him that he couldn’t figure it out. It also annoyed him that she had fought for this and now it felt like she was shutting him out, and it especially annoyed him that any of this annoyed him at all. Kaler wasn’t used to caring so much, or to getting so involved with someone. If it had been anyone else just two months ago, he could have cared less about what was going on in someone’s mind. Just so long as he would have gotten what he had been after, all would have been considered fine and well in his world. Now here he was, actually concerned about someone else like how most other human beings would normally be, and he was frustrated with how he had no idea what was going on or how he could attempt to fix it.
Kaler glanced over at Izzy, watching as he fingers moved through her hair and started toying with the ends. A frown came to his lips; he knew that Izzy didn’t play with her hair like that unless she was truly upset about something. He had thought that she was distant, but he hadn’t been clued into the fact that she was upset about something until just then and it worried him a little more. He turned on his side, propping himself up on his elbow so that he could actually see Izzy’s face. “What’s wrong?” When she moved her eyes to look up into his, Kaler was greeted with so much sadness, and that he wasn’t expecting at all. Izzy was usually the kind of girl that didn’t let shit get to her at all. She had a devil may care attitude about life, and Kaler had never seen her get sad or upset. It brought on all new worries, and he really couldn’t imagine what was going through her head. The one thing that his mind jumped on was this fake family, this fake pregnancy. What if that was something she wanted to be real? That seemed a little far fetched, because Kaler didn’t see Izzy thinking of and dreaming up things that serious for them at all. However, it had seemed far more likely to come out of her mouth than what her answer had actually been to his simple question.
Maybe he shouldn’t have been as shocked as he was to hear Vidette’s name come from Izzy’s lips, and maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised that Izzy would have these kind of thoughts, but he was. After all, this relationship had been her idea from the beginning, and she had known where he stood even then. Now she was truly questioning it, questioning them, and Kaler never would have guessed that she would be this upset over it. He knew that she wanted him to say something to make this better, to patch it up like he had been willing to do when she had come to him with a “pregnancy scare,” but this? This seemed way more difficult. “Izzy…you know nothing has changed,” he told her, his voice quiet as he admitted that he was still so in love with Vidette that it was almost pathetic. Being with Izzy and doing everything that he had been doing to try and get Vidette off of his mind hadn’t worked. She was still in there, and seemed like she would always be just to torment him, to remind him of what he had lost. “I can’t help what I want, but with I’m with you, I’m with you. No one else.” He wasn’t twisted enough to pretend otherwise, and while Kaler missed Vidette, he didn’t compare Izzy to her. Now his expression was tinged with a small hint of sadness, Kaler already knowing where this was going. “That’s not enough though, is it?” He knew it wasn’t. “I don’t expect it to be. You deserve more than this…” This had been inevitable from the start, but it was still sad to realize that this was it; they were indeed breaking up.

Isobel Caulfield did not get attached to someone normally, but that was not this thing worked. Kaler Scott had worked his way into her life in a way that she could never imagine her life without it. Everything about him was amazing, and so far they had been the ideal couple. At least that was what she had thought, and now she was sitting there having some kind of doubt about everything. She was so not into what was going on, and she knew that Kaler would always know that. Izzy knew that Kaler would know everything about her, he had learned everything about how to turn her own. How to make her smile, how to just make her feel good, and then again the worst part was he knew how to tell when she was upset about something. That was the worst part about this whole relationship. He had worked so much into her life that she was terrified to admit that she had those feelings for him. She had loved him in some way that she would never admit out loud, and never to him.
The worst part about this was that he had known not only from her playing with her hair but for the fact that her body was not snuggled up right against his. She quite enjoyed their cuddling after sex, but tonight there was too much in her head. She was contemplating if he really thought about her or if the entire time he was being with her he was thinking about Vidette. A girl that had plagued him, and the worst part was that she knew then entire time they were together he was in love with someone else. It had never once crossed her mind until this moment, and this world was not something that she wanted to be a part of in a relationship. She was having a hard time admitting that she had these kinds of feelings for him. She was beginning to feel all of these, and then her eyes bore every piece of sadness she could ever try to express. Kaler could read her like a book, and there were few moments when the world knew what was going on with Isobel. The only time she ever showed emotion was when it came that time of the year around her mother’s anniversary. She figured that Kaler would not expect the words that had come from her mouth, and that showed on his face.
She was not surprised whenever he started to speak. Izzy should have known that he was still in love with Vidette, but she had no idea why this hurt her as deeply as it did. She had no idea what possessed her to question everything that she was doing. Why she had decided to let her heart get to her, or why she decided to let this bother her. Izzy was not one to get emotions, or to let those damn strings get in the way. Her blue eyes were staring at his, locked hoping that something, anything would make this better than what it was. She knew that it was never going to. “I kind of figured, and I don’t know why I am this upset. I knew this going in. Didn’t I?”
She was admitting defeat in this situation, and that was not something that Isobel Caulfield liked to do in the least. She hated to say this, and that is everything that she was doing in this conversation. Their “family” was a funny little thing, but not even little Noah could save this. “Well, I am glad that I can still keep your mind occupied. Too bad I am just not enough for you Kaler, and I really wish I had been. Because this, this was a better run than I could have ever thought.” She could see the sadness hit him, because the two of them knew exactly where this was going. Both of them knew that this was not going to last, but it did not mean that she had not wanted it too. Izzy shook her head, sad that this was the decision she was being forced to make. Her blue eyes were sad, and this was not something she wanted. “Kaler, I don’t deserve anything better than this. I wanted this to work, but no. It just is not enough. I can’t do this whenever I know you love her.” Izzy sat up and craddled her head in her hands. She was someone that did not want to cry, but she felt a tear slide down her cheek. She was sad, and this was horrible. “I can’t lose us though, we are too perfect.” Their friendship meant more to her than words could ever dream to express, but that was what was scaring her. She was not wanting to give it up, and she was not sure what was going to happen because of this. [/blockquote]

He never should have agreed to this in the first place. Kaler had thought that he had been doing a good thing, but this moment was proof that he shouldn’t have even attempted thinking like that. When Izzy had suggested that they take their friendship to this level, Kaler had known what was in his heart and mind, and it wasn’t her. But, it had just been the way that she had looked at him with hope filling those pretty blue eyes…he hadn’t known how to say no to her. Saying no probably would have hurt her, probably would have made things awkward between them for a little while and that wasn’t something that Kaler knew how to deal with. Izzy was his very best friend, and he had stopped fighting everything so that he could give her exactly what she had wanted. Now he saw that in his efforts to keep from hurting her in the beginning, he was only hurting her now in the end. At least before, neither of them knew how this could be, how they could make each other feel despite Kaler’s heart not being in it. If he had just turned her down then, this silly attachment that was making this so damn hard now wouldn’t have existed, and wouldn’t be causing so much hurt that it was practically unbearable. Kaler was a man that had a reputation for breaking hearts and not giving a damn about it, but this was Izzy, and he didn’t know how this was ever going to be okay.
It was just the things that she was saying, and the way that those bright blue eyes looked at him with so much sadness that it hurt. She was right; they had both known how this was from the beginning. Izzy knew how Kaler felt before Kaler did sometimes, and she had been able to tell that he was head over heels in love with Vidette. She also knew that it killed Kaler to know that this one woman that had mattered most to him had rejected him, and would never be his. Izzy had taken him anyway, and tried to take his mind far away from Vidette and that wonderful thing that he had shared with her but had also managed to ruin with one snap of his ferocious temper. Even knowing this, Kaler’s heart hadn’t given up on those feelings, and it was what was making this relationship with Izzy impossible. The one thing that he hated most in what she was saying, though, was how she wished that she could have been enough, and how she apparently hadn’t been for him. Just the idea of that send a shock right through him, made him angry with himself for ever making a woman as amazing as Izzy feel that way about herself. Kaler’s own blue eyes watched as she sat herself up, cradling her head in her hands.
“I can’t lose us though, we are too perfect.” Kaler felt his eyes close, him biting the inside of his lip as the room plunged into darkness. Dear god, why was this so hard? Why had he let this happen? Why couldn’t he have fallen in love with this woman? Kaler knew that he didn’t deserve her, not after all of the things that he had done, but if things could have been different, if she could have found love with her instead of Vidette, he knew things would turn out perfectly. Kaler once scoffed at the idea of soul mates, but he had had his eyes opened a lot lately, and what he was seeing now that this woman, though she would never be his, was in fact his soul mate. He forced his eyes open and sat up too, leaning over and letting an arm wrap around Izzy’s shoulders, pulling her into him as his other arm went around her in a kind of embrace. “You aren’t going to lose us, Iz. I’m not going anywhere,” he told her, his voice soft and low, mouth close to her ear. “You are the perfect woman, and no one is ever going to deserve you, not even me, but you’ll never lose me as a friend.” And dear lord, he hoped that he wouldn’t lose her, either. Kaler depended on her, whether he wanted to admit it or not. He needed her, just like he thought that she needed him. “You wouldn’t get that lucky,” he added, joking and trying to lighten this mood as he leaned down and pressed a sweet, soft kiss to the bare skin of her shoulder. His lips lingered there, his arms still wrapped around her and keeping her held close. “We’ll be okay.” Kaler hoped that he could reassure her, and make this better in any little way that he possibly could because this right here? This was not Kaler and Izzy, and he wouldn’t let them be like this. Kaler was not the perfect guy or the perfect boyfriend, but he could be that good of a friend to her now.

What in the hell had possessed her to let her emotions get the better of her? Why had she let herself find someone to get attached too? Before this whole relationship she had been satisfied with being his best friend and someone that had benefited from the reputation that proceeded him. They were the same kind of people, never letting someone close enough to hurt them. That was how Izzy worked, no one knew things about her like Kaler did. He was the only one that knew about her mother, and he was one of the only people that could read her like a book. Kaler knew about her little tick with her hair, and just how to entertain her and where to kiss. This relationship had been flawed from the beginning, and she knew that. She knew he was in love with someone else whenever they had started this little relationship, but never had she imagined a life that was so complete with him. He was her perfect match, her soul mate, and until now she had never believed in that kind of shit. It never existed to her, but here she was beginning to cry over something that she could not control. She knew that Kaler loved her in his own way, but that she was never going to be good enough for him. Never close to what he wanted from Vidette, and that was why she was looking at him with sadness in her eyes. Isobel was tired of it all, trying to hide how she felt so she told him, and she knew that she was breaking in two when she did it. Her heart was on the floor in a zillion pieces, realizing that she was not good enough for him.
She sat there with her head in her hands thinking about the possibility of losing what they had. Isobel was so sad about this, and she had no idea why. She had known everything, but she also knew that after all of this time if they had truly fallen in love everything would have been perfect. They never would have to look for anything else, but that was the problem. You don’t get to pick who you fall in love with, and damn it she had some kind of love for Kaler and he was in love with Vidette. So Izzy was sitting there broken, but then his arms started to wrap around her frame. She really did not need him to hold her, but in the same token he was the only thing holding her together from complete destruction. His arms were keeping her safe, and he spoke softly to her. He wasn’t going anywhere, at least that was what he was telling her now. Things always changed after a breakup and that was how it went. She knew that, but he sat there telling her that he didn’t deserve her and no one else was going to. She just raised her head and tilted it slightly at him. “That does not make me feel better Kaler, and you can’t guarantee that things aren’t going to change. But whatever you say.”
she let her dark hair fall down around her as she hid her face again feeling the tears start to rise. When she felt his lips against her skin, that was what snapped her out of this. She was not going to sit there with him and do this. She snapped herself out of this trance long enough to realize that she had to get out. Izzy could not sit there and wallow, not here. She would go home and drink herself to death if she had too. “I hope so.” Izzy heard the words slip from her lips, and she did truly hope that they were going to be okay. She let her icy blue eyes meet his and then she shrugged him off of her. She needed to get out she felt like she couldn’t breath. This had never happened to her, but she felt like she was going to either have a heart attack or just in general stop breathing. She looked at him, and instead of sadness there was fear in her eyes. Izzy immediately started to find her clothes and was up on her feet quickly. She was putting her clothes on and she could see Kaler staring at her dumbfounded. “I hope you are right, but I can’t sit here and do this. I’m sorry Kaler.” She had all but her shirt on when she was flying down the stairs out to her camaro and down the street. She was sad that this happened, and that is when the tears finally started to come. She was heartbroken and just done. This was the end of it, and she was praying that Kaler was right and this would all be okay eventually. [/blockquote]
